Best and worst contractors of 2007 | Atlanta
In addition to our nationwide list of the best and worst contractors, we selected a few the exemplary – and not-so-exemplary – service contractors in the Atlanta area.*
PlumbPros Plumbing Co. | Smyrna, Ga.
An unfamiliar noise late on a Sunday at night startled Deborah Uher of Marietta. "The plumbing connector between the meter and the pipe that brings water into the house broke with a loud pop on a Sunday night," Uher says.
"Water rushed down the side of the house. PlumbPros answers the phone 24/7. I talked to the owner at 10:20 p.m. that night, and he sent someone to fix the problem at 9 a.m. Monday morning."
PlumbPros also helped out Myrna Evans of Smyrna when she experience garabage disposal issues. "I plugged up my garbage disposal by putting too much food down it at one time. D'oh! Owner Michael Jordan unstopped my kitchen sink drain the same day I called, which was great. There may be lots of plumbers on Angie's List, but there's now only one on my list to call.
"Michael is pleasant and professional, and he goes about his work very efficiently. He even took time to explain some helpful things about my disposal. This is the best and most honest plumber I've ever hired."
Pinnacle Window & Siding Co. | Marietta, Ga.
Julie Jenkins of Smyrna has nothing but praise for Pinnacle Windows & Siding Co. "Pinnacle replaced all the windows in my older home. Their attention to detail was impressive, and I'm very pleased with the work," Jenkins says. "The crew showed up on time, covered the floors with cloths and protected the house as they went. I'm a single woman who's had bad experiences with other companies in the past, so it was great to find this company.
"Lee [Fuller, the owner] promptly followed up after the installation. During his inspection, he found fingerprints and called a window cleaning company to come over, which was great!I'm a single woman who's had bad experiences with other companies in the past, so it was great to find this company."
DLK Roofing & Contracting | Conyers, Ga.
DLK Roofing Contracting was the only Atlanta company on the List to be put in the Penalty Box twice in 2007. Colleen Simmons filed a complaint with Angie's List after a supplier placed a lien on her home because, according to Simmons, DLK allegedly apparently paid for roofing materials with a bad check.
Although she didn't have a lien placed on her home, Sandra Adams had an equally terrible experience with DLK. "I hired DLK Roofing to replace my shingle roof. Owner David King told me he never used subcontractors, yet there were two subcontractor crews on my roof," Adams says.
"They threw nails and shot the air gun at my dogs to tease them. King never returned to pick up the nails, so my new car tire now has a plug after a nail punctured it. I paid him in full for the contract, which they didn't fulfill. When I posted an honest review of my experience, King threatened me over the phone (I recorded the call). I'm not only out of a complete job, but my 10-year warranty, too."
Terrell Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. | Atlanta
Tonya Hollis of Marietta called on Terrell Heating & Air Conditioning to install a new HVAC system in her home, but says she received bad advice and faulty work. "Terrell Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. installed my heating and air service. The company didn't put an air vent in the bathroom, advising it would damage the foundation. I now have three estimates stating a bathroom vent is possible," Hollis says.
"Jim Terrell [the owner] said they'd return to add the vent and fix other problems. They never did, and now they're unresponsive to my calls. I paid another company $300 after water started leaking because the unit wasn't properly hooked up - causing water to settle in the basement along with rats. The workers also left materials in my yard, forcing me to rent a Dumpster."
We required that "The Best" local companies be highly rated on Angie's List and nominated by members. "The Worst" had to be poorly rated and in the Penalty Box.
