Best Albuquerque Contractors of 2012

Pest Defense Solutions | Albuquerque, N.M.

Justin Sego, co-owner of Pest Defense Solutions, graduated with a business degree and plans of becoming a financial planner in 2007. However, the economic situation at the time made him change his mind. He took his business knowledge, paired it with his experience working pest control,
and opened Pest Defense with his brother, Garret Sego, in March 2008.
The company has eight employees.

Taylor Ranch, N.M., Angie's List member Gina Black first used them in November 2011 for interior and exterior bug spraying and now has them out every other month. “They’ll come back and ask if they did everything or if I want anything,” Black says. “They don’t leave until I’m satisfied.” Black says she likes that the company uses products that are safe for humans and pets.

Pest Defense holds the required licenses from the New Mexico Department of Agriculture and offers organic products. The company donates service to a local veteran program. Justin says his main priority is customer service, which is why he has high expectations for his technicians. “The technicians represent the company,” he says. “Our slogan is: ‘Better technicians, better service.’”

Abel Plumbing and Heating | Nob Hill, N.M.

At age 7, Melvin Hanson helped plumb a well and run a waterline for his father, who worked in land development. Today, he runs his own plumbing company. Hanson emphasizes his personal relationships with clients. “When you are told something, it’s from the top,” he says. “And you can put faith in it.”

In addition to his New Mexico contractor license, Abel holds certifications from the EPA and another professional organization known as ICB/TABB, which promotes standards for the industry. Abel does charity work for the local VFW Moose Lodge and FEMA low-income housing.

Albuquerque member Phil Auerbach hired Abel twice. “He comes when he says he is going to come,” he says. “He doesn’t say that it will be between 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.,
so you’re not waiting around.” Auerbach praised Hanson and his assistant for their friendliness to his dogs.

Brush Up Interior Painting | Tijeras, N.M.

Northeast Heights member Andy Cordova says the crew of licensed and EPA-certified lead-safe contractor Brush Up Interior Painting was so good they didn’t need painter’s tape, and praised owner Tom Armijo.
“He was ... a guy who exuded confidence,” says Cordova, adding his dog liked the crew.

Armijo, a retired Albuquerque Police officer, started his five-time Super Service Award-winning painting business in 2005. He donated labor to paint the kitchen of a woman who was featured on “Hoarders,” and donates to charities. Armijo says likes do a little extra
for clients, such as power washing the walkways if he is being paid to
do the deck. “We aren’t leaving your house until you’re happy,” he says.
