Basement flooding brings waterproofing under debate

COMPLAINT: Richard Janal, Lake Oswego, Ore.

"Rock Solid Waterproofing Solutions in Portland [Ore.] put in a water pump and some drainage, with a guarantee against future basement water problems. The first big rains after the work resulted in complete basement flooding. The owner refused to offer me any compensation for damages and wanted to do more work."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want a $5,000 refund."

RESPONSE: Ken VahnDijk, owner, Rock Solid Waterproofing Solutions

"Based on his explanation and a visual inspection, it appeared the water originated from a portion of the retaining wall and stairs. He accepted my proposal for repairs, and we installed the system.

"Nearly two years later, I responded to his call to inspect new water intrusion. I determined the water was entering from an adjacent wall. The previously treated area was dry. The contract clearly states the warranty is for the treated area only."

STATUS: Stalemate
