Answering Machine Offers Perfect Pitch for Davidson Violin Repair Shop
Every business owner knows that a recommendation from an expert is valuable.
For Frank Albert, owner of Davidson Violins, it’s been invaluable.
Albert expanded his shop, which specializes in sales, rentals and repairs of string instruments, from one location in Davidson, North Carolina, to a second location in Charlotte’s Cotswold neighborhood earlier this year.
After seeing customers travel to Davidson from Union County and points even farther south, he realized the demand for expert violin repair services in the area.
A violin maker's endorsement
Many customers are coming to Davidson Violins because of a voicemail message from famed luthier Kurt Widenhouse.
From his shop in Belmont, about a half hour west of Charlotte, Widenhouse has crafted professional-grade violins for years. His works include instruments played by performers in the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Earlier in 2014, the North Carolina-based violin maker Widenhouse stopped taking in repairs, but the message on his answering machine recommends Davidson Violins to people looking for violin repair service.
“It means a lot to people who know strings,” Albert says of Widenhouse’s endorsement of the work done at Davidson Violins by Albert and his former business partner, Tim Donley.
Playing to all levels of musicians
Davidson Violins has served musicians, from beginning children to professional adults, in the Lake Norman area since 2008 and opened in space next to the Arts Center for All on South Sharon Amity Road in March.
“We really expanded in response to demand,” Albert says. “Although local music stores can cover a lot of bases, the world of strings really needs specialists. If you take a violin to a general music store (for repair), they’re going to ship it out. We do everything on site, and that’s appealing to people.”
In addition to instrument repairs, Davidson Violins offers violin rentals and sales of traditional strings. It specializes in electric violins. Albert also enjoys introducing children to the music of string instruments, whether by giving a quick demonstration or by helping families find music lessons in the Charlotte area.
