Altanta roofing company accused of damaging home

Two-sided story

COMPLAINT: Joanna Patterson, Duluth, Ga.

"I hired Cranor Roofing to replace siding and some soffit board, paint the new siding with two coats and caulk nail holes. The Hardy Plank siding wasn't installed according to the manufacturer's instructions, and the flashing was improperly installed or not installed at all. The flashing actually violates building codes.

"They split and damaged siding and corner molding. Three different repair people said the siding cannot be salvaged, but must be removed and replaced. There are areas that don't even have one coat of paint, and they didn't caulk and fill all the nail holes. I've had the job inspected by a licensed home inspector who found several other problems. The company also left two truckloads of debris in my driveway."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want a refund, plus payment for damages."

RESPONSE: Ben Cranor, owner, Cranor Roofing

"The member inspected, signed off and paid for the siding. She hired another contractor to install windows and doors. We had to wait for the installers to finish so we could paint the new windows. When we came back, she wanted all the windows taken off their tracks, painted and reinstalled.

"The head painter told her this could cause damage to the windows. Later, she admitted to secretly having the painters remove some windows, which caused some damage. To clear up the matter, I insisted she refrain from talking to the painters anymore. She was not pleased with my request and decided she didn't want us to finish the job.

"I asked for one last meeting to agree on terms of completion. We met and made notes of all she wanted done. We fixed siding the installers had damaged, hung a loose downspout, filled in a foundation crack that wasn't related to our job and installed a new motion sensor light - at our expense.

"I called her to see when I could pick up the leftover siding, seal some flashing and pick up a $328 check, which she'd agreed to pay out of a $850 balance. One can only imagine my shock when she informed me she'd be reporting me to a consumer group."

STATUS: Stalemate

Mixed-up mortgage

COMPLAINT: Dawn Stephen, Stone Mountain, Ga.

"Bank of America [Jacksonville Loan Center] was supposed to get me a fixed Federal Housing Administration mortgage; however, they signed me up for a piggyback loan. The person who signed me up was fired right after the situation.

"This cost me the home I wanted, because he didn't file my information in time. I had to purchase an additional plane ticket and extend my hotel and car rental due to this company's negligence."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want reimbursement for the hotel ($325), car rental ($325) and the plane ticket ($145)."

STATUS: Penalty Box

Fee glitch

COMPLAINT: Bill Garrett, Roswell, Ga.

"I took my laptop computer to Geek iT in Alpharetta after a hard drive failure. The woman I spoke with told me that if they weren't able to retrieve the data, there would be no charge. When I returned, they said they couldn't retrieve any data but still charged me $50."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want a $50 refund."

STATUS: Penalty Box

Gotcha covered

COMPLAINT: Wendi Morgan, Norcross, Ga.

"I hired Thrasher Pool & Spa to get a new hot tub cover. I'd ordered a cover from another company that ended up being the wrong size and non-returnable. Thrasher said they could return the cover and have it replaced for me, so I paid them $740 up front.

"When I didn't hear from them for a few days, I called. They didn't respond at first, then called to say the owner had been out of town. We arranged a time for them to come out, but they didn't show. Now the phone is disconnected."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want the hot tub cover or a refund."

STATUS: Resolved

Editor's note: Thrasher delivered the cover, and the member says she considers the case resolved.
