Air duct cleaning expert offers advice for Boston homeowners
How important is air-duct cleaning? How often should it be done? Is it worth it to pay the extra money to ensure there is no mold in the air ducts? — Angie's List member Glenn Millar
Regularly cleaning your air ducts is extremely important, according to Paul Vorrias, owner of highly rated Peabody Air Duct Cleaning in Peabody, Mass., which also services Boston. "Whatever goes through your air ducts goes through your lungs," Vorrias says. "If you have respiratory issues like allergies or asthma, air ducts should be cleaned every three years. If you have pets or there are smokers in the home, clean the air ducts more often."
The cost of air-duct cleaning depends on the size of the house size, the number of furnaces and the configurations of the ducts, Vorrias says. "Most homes fall in the $400 to $1,200 range."
As far as ensuring there is no mold in your air ducts, Vorrias believes it's definitely worth the extra money to get proper mold testing done by a professional. "Always ask for references from your HVAC service provider," he says, "and beware of companies that do shoddy work."
If you have any concerns about cleanliness, Vorrias recommends having your contractor inspect the air ducts with a video camera before and after cleaning. In between cleanings, he suggests changing your furnace filters several times every year.
