Make the most of your Medicare coverage

November 8, 2013 by Cynthia Wilson

It’s that time of year when Medicare beneficiaries and their families fret over which health insurance plan best meets their or their loved one’s needs. Start with these tips and find doctors who accept Medicare.

Educate yourself.

Your State Health Insurance Assistance Program offers free, unbiased counseling. Visit shiptalk.org to find your state’s toll-free number.

Get help.

Talk to a highly rated insurance broker with experience in many different plans to get the broad view.

Know your own health.

Some choose Medicare Advantage plans, especially healthier individuals looking to save on premiums. Before opting out of original Medicare, make sure the Advantage plan coverage is right for you.

Call your doctors.

Before you enroll in a plan, contact your physicians’ billing offices to see if they accept Medicare (and ask if they’re in-network if enrolling in Medicare Advantage).

Need a new doctor?

Decide which hospital or health system to use and ask the billing office which physicians are accepting new Medicare patients. Then check reviews on Angie’s List.

Understand claims.

Medicare won’t reimburse patients for services provided by private contract doctors who completely opt out of Medicare. You can be reimbursed for some services that non-participating doctors bill Medicare for. Questions? Call 800-MEDICARE.
