6 Snow Day DIY Home Improvement Projects

3 pros!
This past August, the 2017 Farmer's Almanac hit store shelves with some bold predictions for the upcoming winter.
Most of the country is expected to experience frigid winter temperatures and an abundance of snow. While many of us don’t mind an occasional snow day to do absolutely nothing at home, the appeal fades quickly as the snow days pile up. Compiling a to-do list for such occurrences can make you feel as if you’ve accomplished something even when you’re restricted to the indoors. Here are some suggestions to get you started on your own list:
Change outlet covers
Outlet covers are probably something you no longer notice. However, your guests likely do. If yours have become discolored, why not spend a couple hours updating them? Add extra flair to a room by selecting new covers that tie in with your hardware and woodwork.
Install a programmable thermostat
Paying for a warm home when no one is there to reap the benefits is a waste of money. Installing a programmable thermostat gives you the ability to regulate the temperature throughout the day and guarantees that your home is warmed to your ideal temperature when you return at the end of the day.
Add a backsplash
Don’t let this project intimidate you. A DIY backsplash is easily achievable. Popular beginner options that won’t leave you frustrated include pegboard, peel and stick tile and thermoplastic tiles.
Organize your closet
Studies have shown that excessive clutter can be detrimental to one’s overall well-being. Take back your closet by donating anything without significant value that hasn’t been worn in a year. Maximize space by using skinny hangers and stackable bins. Over-the-door racks help you maximize every inch of space.
Update your entryway
Consider the entryway your home’s first impression to guests. All too often, an entryway is a letdown because it lacks excitement. Including a mirror can give the illusion of a larger space because it will reflect light when the front door is open. Opt for an alluring bench for guests to sit on when removing their shoes. If possible, select a bench with built-in storage options for winter gear.
Add a fresh coat of paint
Updating a room’s paint color is one of quickest ways to update the aura of a room. While winter may seem like an unnatural time of the year to undertake this project, doing so can actually be advantageous. That’s because outdoor levels of humidity are lower, which speeds up drying times. If you’ve got several rooms to paint, a power roller can reduce the strain on your back and speed up the process.
