5 signs you need to see a dentist
If you have a dental problem that prompts you to think you may need to visit a dentist but you're unsure, here are five indicators that mean you should see a dentist right away:
1. Bleeding gums
If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it could be the first signs of periodontal or gum disease. Left untreated this condition can damage the tissue and supporting structure of your teeth. Other possible disease advancements include tooth loss, mouth pain and bad breath.
2. Chronic pain
If your teeth are frequently the cause of pain, a dentist can determine if the problem is something as simple as a cavity, sensitive teeth or more serious issues such as periodontal disease or other medical conditions.
3. Canker sores
If they heal in a few days, canker sores are only minor discomforts. However, if you experience a canker sore that won't heal, and if high fever or persistent pain, a canker sore can indicate a more serious problem that should be evaluated by a dentist.
4. Dry mouth
Advanced age or the side effects of prescription medicines can cause dry mouth, but it can also be caused by diseases that compromise the body's immune system. If you experience persistent, unexplained dry mouth, visit your dentist, as the condition can rapidly advance gum and tooth decay.
5. Other conditions
Additional symptoms such as unexplained bleeding, sores haven't healed after more than ten days, a numb or sore feeling in the mouth, or white or red patches can all mean you should see your dentist immediately, as they may be signs of oral cancer.
