5 organizing tips to clear your clutter
Do you have a space that is filled with clutter? Maybe you can’t find the items you need, you miss a deadline or feel overwhelmed when you look at the space. You are not alone.
Many individuals are in the same situation, but there is a way to eliminate this clutter. Below are five tips to help you organize your space.
1. Break it down.
The first tip is to calm down and break the space into manageable pieces based on your time and your stamina. If it is a desk, break it down into drawers, top, underneath and sides. You do not have to do the entire desk on the same day to get the results you need.
Take it at your own pace. If it is a room, maybe break it down into sections, like a square, and only concentrate on one area at a time. Setting a timer may prove helpful in this process.
2. Clear the area.
Next, you’ll want to clear everything from the space you are working on today. Have three piles labeled “donate,” “trash” and “keep.” Donate the items you no longer use or want and trash items that are beyond their usefulness.
3. Move it if it doesn’t belong.
Tip three is to look at the items you have decided to keep and eliminate those that do not belong in the space, such as kitchen dishes on your desk or toys in the kitchen. Make sure those items go to their proper space.
4. Ask yourself questions.
You should ask yourself about the remaining items you have kept. Did you keep it because you might use it one day? The problem is, you have been saying that for over a year and so far you have not needed it. Maybe it is time to eliminate.
If you still cannot eliminate it, try putting it in a storage area such as the basement and see if you really need it. After a year, if you have not even thought about the item, it is time to eliminate.
5. Make a schedule.
Finally, you’ll want to schedule a time to organize just like you would a doctor's appointment. Make sure you put it down in your calendar and keep the appointment. Reward yourself with your accomplishments and you will see results.
