4 ways to reduce the cost of your new floor

When choosing a contractor to install your new floor, it’s important to research the companies in your area and have a full understanding of the project you want to have done. Below are some tips to help lower the cost of your project and choose the best flooring dealer.

1. Understand the quote

Make sure the quote you receive is comprehensive. Some dealers will quote a price for the product and installation, but they do not include trims, moldings, backer boards or settings materials.

The dealer may also advertise “free” rooms. If you look at the fine print, these kinds of deals are often for "carpet or tile only" and you still pay full price (or more) for all the other materials like pad, trims, grout and labor. By the time you add all these items to the bottom line, you may not be getting a deal at all.

2. Eliminate labor tasks

An easy way to save money is to tell the dealer that you will remove the furniture in the rooms where the flooring is being installed. All dealers charge for the time and labor involved in moving furniture, and if the provider agrees to move furniture or appliances, they assume the liability if something is damaged.

3. Ask about warranties

Ask about an installation guarantee. Materials are covered by the manufacturer, but the dealer is the one who warranties the work. Most dealers offer a one-year warranty on labor. If you can find one that offers a longer warranty, they are more likely to be a reputable company with professional installations.

4. Be clear about your budget

When selecting products, make sure the dealer understands your needs, uses, concerns and budget. Kids, pets, allergies and moisture content are just some of the factors to consider when choosing the right products for you.

If you have an issue with flooding or dampness in your basement, you don’t want to install carpet or a natural wood product. Laminates don’t belong there either. However, a luxury vinyl tile might be perfect. In addition, if you have a Chevy budget, but the dealer keeps steering you toward the BMW products, they are not listening.

There are many factors that go into finding the right flooring contractor. Don’t waste your time with a dealer that won’t listen. No matter how nice the product appears in the showroom, you won’t be happy with it if it doesn’t meet your needs.
