4 ways to prep your deck for guests
As warmer weather approaches and outdoor get-togethers beckon, make sure your deck is well maintained and ready to hold a party.
- Clean between the lines. Use a putty knife to remove debris that's accumulated between the boards. This will allow for better drainage and reduce rot and mildew.
- Trim excess vegetation growing around the deck to promote air circulation and deter mold. If mildew appears, use a cleaner with oxygen bleach. It's effective and less toxic than chlorine bleaches.
- Both wood and composite decks need a good scrub-a-dub-dub once a year. Use a stiff broom, a biodegradable detergent and a blast from the water hose for the annual cleaning.
- Check for loose nails. Drag a garden rake across the boards to snag the raised offenders. Replace them with stainless steel deck screws, which will better withstand the elements.
