4 tips to organize your space and keep it that way

You may not have been born with innate organizational skills, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn some tricks to keep your home organized and space used efficiently. Here are my top four tips to take on any clutter in your home.

1. Know that your space does not need to look like a magazine photo shoot.

Unless you are selling your home, your space should fit your current life and be livable. Perfection can be harmful when starting to organize as trying to make every space perfect is overwhelming and can be discouraging. Every space is different for every person, so don't try to keep up with the Joneses.

2. Take each space in sections.

Break your home down into manageable pieces. Most people look at all their spaces as one and immediately become overwhelmed and give up before they start.

3. Know the difference between want and need.

As you look through the space you are organizing, ask yourself if the item is something you really need or just wanted when you purchased it.

4. Use the acronym SPACE when tackling your organizing project:

Sort: Group like things together to really get an idea of how many you really have.

Purge: Clear out the items you no longer want, need or use. Many charities are glad to take your purged items, so look for places to donate in your area.

Assign: Give your items to a specific location in your home, ideally one that coordinates with where they will be used.

Contain: Place all items worthy of keeping in a properly sized container. I tell my clients not to go out and purchase containers because they usually have enough, they just do not have the right items in them.

Equalize: To maintain your organized space, it’s a good idea to periodically come back to those spaces to ask yourself if they are still serving your current life and make changes as necessary.

So you should never be overwhelmed by disorganized space. Organizing is a learnable skill and purging consistently will leave your home clutter free and your life less stressful. But you never have to do it alone if you do find yourself facing a large project, you can call in an organizing professional.
