10 steps to install pavers amidst your landscape

Paving stones are a lovely alternative to concrete driveways, patios and walkways. They come in a variety of colors that will compliment your landscape while providing a durable solution to your outdoor needs.

The easiest and fastest way to install pavers is to work with an experienced contractor. However, you can install paving stones yourself by following these steps:

1. Determine where you want to install pavers.

Take a picture of the area and use an online pavers visualizer tool to see how it will look once pavers are installed.

2. Measure the space.

Multiply the length by the width to determine the total square footage. You will need this information in order to purchase the right amount of pavers for your project. Pavers are typically priced and sold per square foot.

3. Purchase your pavers.

You can find pavers specials online and save money by looking for discounts. Online retailers will often have a wide variety of colors and styles to choose from. When comparing prices find out if the price of the pavers includes demolition and labor.

4. Excavate the area.

You need to dig eight inches deep and ensure that the surface is flat and compact. Check the soil density and install a geotextile layer if needed.

5. Lay the base.

Lay a gravel base four to six inches deep. The base needs to be compacted and inspected to make sure it is sturdy. The base is essential for durability.

6. Lay the premium washed sand.

Lay the sand one to two inches deep. Make sure area is level before you begin placing the pavers.

7. Install the pavers.

Install the pavers you have purchased by laying them directly on top of the sand. This is when you can arrange them in a pattern based on color and size. Once installed, the pavers need to be compacted and set.

8. Use sand filler.

Place the sand filler in between the stone pavers to prevent them from slipping or becoming loose. Polymeric sand is an excellent product for this particular task.

9. Cleaning.

Clean your paving stones and identify any areas that don’t have enough sand filler.

10. Apply paver sealer.

Use paver sealer to help your paving stones look new longer. This will also make cleaning the pavers much easier

You can install paving stones yourself, but be prepared to dedicate a couple of days to the project. You may want to purchase a tool or machine to help you excavate the area. You will also need a wheelbarrow, gloves and a shovel.

If you shop paver specials, you may be able to have them installed by a professional contractor for the same price it would cost to do it yourself and purchase the appropriate tools. It is always smart to shop around and read reviews to make sure you are purchasing durable pavers and working with an Angie’s List approved contractor and retailer.
