Prevent your pipes from freezing

Extreme temperatures during winter could lead to a household disaster if your pipes aren’t properly insulated. Preventative maintenance is the best way to avoid a plumbing disaster during extremely cold weather.

Depending on your environment and the placement of your drainage pipes (exposed to cold temperatures, fabricated homes or mobil homes, trailer homes) a slow trickle of water can result in an ice dam forming in your main drainage pipe. This is a common problem where temperatures fall into double digit negative temperatures. Most ice dam's are discovered after flushing a toilet and it begins overflowing because the water in the drain has no where to go. Using heat tape has a number of disadvantages including continuous energy consumption, difficult installation and they don't protect pipes hidden in walls. A number of homeowners have begun using what owners of winter cabins rely on, intermittent circulation of warm water. A temperature adjustable hot water circulator allows for a lower temperature setting than standard circulators and uses less energy than heat tape and it protects more of the homes pipes including those in walls. A side benefit is the system can also be used to improve hot water readiness and eliminate having to waste water down the drain each time hot water is needed.
