Reading reviews on moving companies is a must

Whether it's around the corner or across the country, moving all your belongings is a hectic, emotional time. Hiring a professional moving company should offer relief, not additional stress, yet it's not uncommon to hear stories about damaged or missing items, belongings arriving to the destination late or even customers being overcharged.

As with any industry, there are good and there bad moving companies. So how can you know your priceless oak hutch and grandfather's roll-top desk will arrive at your new home intact and in good condition? Learn from others' experience. Read reviews of moving companies on Angie's List to get a sense of their track record with customer service.

Once you've done your initial screening of reviews, have at least three moving companies come for an in-home estimate. Be as detailed as possible with the services you need, so the company can provide the appropriately sized moving crew and truck.

Charges for moves in the same city or locality are usually priced by the hour. Moving companies who travel more than 50 miles will generally base the price of the move on certified weight and distance shipped. Moves from one state to another require the company to be registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation — so be sure to ask the moving company this if you're crossing state lines.

Finally, here's a moving checklist to ensure your move is smooth:

Pack accessories, extra-valuable or sentimental items, jewelry and medication away before the movers arrive so they can focus on the heavy lifting and you don't have to worry about those items coming up missing.

Get phone numbers of the drivers and make sure they have yours and you're accessible. If the drivers can't get a hold of you, they could place your items in storage, costing you time and money. When the movers arrive at your new home, be ready to lead them to areas in rooms where items should be placed.

Don't sign any paperwork the movers hand you after unloading until you're sure there's nothing missing or damaged.

If you notice that a box is damaged at delivery, open it in the movers' presence and have them confirm the condition of the articles in the box. It will be easier to collect.
