Murder and Moonshine
Description
Submitted by Brenda T.
Year built: 1890s
Years owned: 30
Location: Wabash Avenue in Belleville, Ill.
History: Our home was built by a doctor. When out on a call, someone broke in and stabbed his wife to death on the second landing. The doctor returned, found her dead and left the house never to return.
One of the daughters remained in the house but later hung herself with a rope from the balcony railing.
A preacher living nearby and the seller asked us if we saw the wife's ghost after moving in. Family members have seen the ghost in the house, wearing the same nightgown she had on the night she was murdered.
Moonshine was also made in the basement and exhausted through a hole in the wall under the porch.
