Reduce the hassle by hiring a house cleaning company

Take the kids to school. Go to work. Soccer practices. Dentist appointments. Taking care of yourself and your family these days can leave little time for household chores. And, let's face it: Not many of us look forward to cleaning the house.

Enter a house cleaning or maid service that will come into your home on a regular basis or just once in a while for a house cleaning that's more in depth. If hiring a house cleaning service is an option you think will help you out, consider this advice:

Interview the service and meet the maid. It's important you interview not only a representative from a maid service, but also the actual person who will be cleaning your home. Your comfort level with the house cleaner or cleaners should be high, especially if they'll be working while you're not at home. Once you've made the choice, ask if the same house cleaners will be at your home each time.

Know who you're hiring and get assurances. House cleaners have access to your personal space, so you need assurance that the cleaners that come into your home are trustworthy. Before you make a maid service selection, ask if they do background checks on their employees and if the service maintains proper liability insurance.

What's the maid service rate? Do they charge by the hour or by the project? During the interview of the house cleaning service, be sure to ask this. Cost is determined by factors such as the size of your home, frequency of the maids' visits and any special requests you may have.

Establish clear expectations. Don't be shy making your wishes know. If you want clutter removed from under beds or that 8-foot bookshelf dusted at every visit, put it in writing. The maid service may have requests of their own, such as bedding being stripped prior to their arrival. Ironing out these details ahead of time will prevent misunderstanding or hassles down the road.

Who's responsible for house cleaning supplies? Some companies use their clients' rags, paper towels, cleaners and other household supplies. During your interview with the cleaning service, be sure to ask whether they'll bring their own or if they need access to your stash under the kitchen sink.

Need a deep cleaning at your house? Call ahead. For a maid service that will help you out just once in a while, be sure to give them ample time. Most cleaning services need at least two weeks' notice for an appointment. During the holiday months when house cleaning business picks up, they may need even a bit longer.
