This is the worst experience that I have ever had with a contractor. We spend over $100,000 each year on contractors at our home, and this is by far the worst experience that we have ever had. Clearly I would never recommend Smarthome Solutions for any project. In spite of the owner Pat
's personal commitment PRIOR to signing a contract for a 2 day job that was supposed to be done 8 months ago, I am still waiting for completion and find that incompetence pervades this terrible organization. Please steer clear of this disaster!
After spending 8 hours outlining my expectations and outlining all of my needs, I received an estimate that had only about 60% of what we had discussed addressed. I should have stopped there. I worked with
, the original project manager, and involved Pat
due to the large miss. Pat told me that he would get personally involved and ensure that I had a great experience and that he would stake the claim of his company on getting me a good experience. Pat and I had several conversations and emails going over the entire estimate and he assured me that I would be satisfied.
After pointing out several issues with the estimate and going through about 4 iterations and another 4 hours going back over what I had already explained, we finally agreed to a contract and agreed to work, with an estimated time of 2 days for a $30,000 project, to be completed the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I should have known that this would never work.
After signing the contact and providing a check for 1/2 of the work, I heard nothing from Smarthome. On the evening of Monday before Thanksgiving, the day before the job was to start, I called and texted
and got no response. I then called Pat and he informed me that
was no longer with the company and that he was unaware that we were supposed to start the next day. He told me that he would scramble to get a crew out to work on the house but couldn't promise that it would happen.
They did get half of a crew out the next day, but they could do very little as they had no electrictian which was critical as this was a contract to change all of the smart switches in my home. The new project manager,
, was cantankerous from the start, telling me that this was a much bigger job that was under-bid and that there was no way that it would be done by Thanksgiving. He was negative and demeaning from the start
Clearly the job was not done by Thanksgiving and is still not done. In fact, we had lights coming on in the middle of the night throughout the Holiday weekend when all the kids were home. A major mess.

came back the next week and was angrily working on the system. My wife was home sick, and
was yelling throughout the house, coming into our bedroom without knocking, and calling his co-workers and people who he was calling on the phone "f***
a**holes." We informed Pat of this and Pat told them that
was one of his best installers but that he would pull him off of the job. On to project Manager #3.
Throughout the process, we had Geoff
"supervising" the job which basically meant that he would stop by and laugh with the guys about once a week and to send me change orders, which were always incorrect. Geoff was impossible to get in touch with, rarely answering his mobile and almost never returning a text. He seemed to have, in his words, perpetual "phone issues." Geoff would respond to email after a few days, but I would have to send him multiple emails on the same topic (I generally just copied the original email and sent it to him 2 or 3 times in response to his question).
As the project devolved, I was asked to take an entire Saturday AGAIN walking through all of the changes that needed to be made, another 8 hours of my time. The program was then ran, and was totally wrong. I asked and received the program and made the changes myself, actually having to activate several devices which Smarthome had failed to activate. It took me about 10 hours to program it to where I wanted it. Subsequently, Smarthome came in and programmed over my changes, taking it backwards, and I fortunately was able to load a backup copy that I kept because I expected their incompetence.
Before I signed the original contract, it had extensive review by Smarthome and many discussions with both
and Pat. In spite of this fact, over 80% of the switches (over 100 switches!) had to be replaced.
had actually ordered bright orange switches. And, in spite of sharing with them that I was converting all lights to
, over 1/2 of the switches that they installed didn't work with
lights even though
assured me that they would. Pat questioned me on several occasions if I had communicated this to
, and actually sent me a $7,000 additional bill to cover the mistakes that his company made in not ordering the correct switches
Throughout the process, I called, e-mailed and texted both Pat and Geoff constantly asking for additional focus and better resources, and they just couldn't deliver. I have spent over 70 hours of my own time describing, clarifying, correcting their install mistakes, programming and finally actually doing some of the installs myself. I would never do business with this company again, would never recommend them, and have no confidence that they will stand behind the product that they installed. In fact, I contacted Pat directly for a switch that has already malfunctioned, and he has been non-communicative.

What I didn't realize, until after the fact, was they ran a credit check on me. I never gave my social security number to them, was not asked if they could pull my credit report and definitely did not authorize them to do so. Their injuiry now shows on my report, will remain on there for two years, unless I jump through all the hoops required to have their injuiry removed. At no point in time did the rep tell me they were going to do a credit check on me. I am still looking at home security system options;

The Geek sat and speculated for 1/12 hours. He expressed at least three major guesses. He had no test equipment or instruments of any kind. I thought that a professional would have a way to perform some objective tests. None were done. He basically didn't know any more about the nature of the problem than I did. The difference is; my guesses were free. This guy guessed for over 1 1/2 hours for around $227.00. This was with an Angie's List $50.00 coupon reduction. He could have easily restricted his guessing (and talking) to 15 or 20 minutes and charged accordingly.
He refused to give me the advertised senior citizen's discount because I had an Angie's List coupon. I would not recommend this company to an enemy.
This is the second time Angie's List has solicited a review from me on this company on this company, so this is my second negative review.

came, made a plan, and designed a system in 2010. The installation to one afternoon, and they were professional. The system worked fine, and Nick actually gave me his home phone number. His guys actually nicked the wood trim of a new window, and came back to patch it up.
Next encounter was 2012. He designed and installed a security system in a rental property. He was difficult to reach, and I had to call him again and again but he ultimately got it done. It was frustrating but the work was done, and I didn't want to go with someone like ADT that'd want a contract.
Next was 2013. My system didn't work because a board was shorted out by an electrical event. (I recommend that you consider getting a surge protector if you live in here because there are a lot of lighting strikes that can damage your equipment.) This was fixed, and the cost was about $300.
The next incident with Nick really p***** me off. I had a broken window contact, the contact got corroded and was going off, so it needed to be fixed. Nick's guys came, removed it, turned off the beep, and said they'd come back when the part is in. Bottom line, is that three months have elapsed. They haven't called me. I called Nick and he fails to answer calls, answering one call for every 10 I leave him. He fails to answer messages. Once in a while, he texts me saying that some part is coming in but there's never any follow through. So, it's been three months and this

Nice guys, they do quality work because I had them do a smaller project at my house previously. Their quote for whole he automaton and the other projects were way higher than my other quotes.

For example they quotes $8000 to install dock lights. I bought the best lights you can buy online and had them installed. The total was $2000. ...More />
They quotes $6000 for landscape lights in the front of my house. I paid $1800 for the lights and installation brought the project to $2500 total.

Cabinet lights quotes at $3000 which I had done for less than $1000.

I was honestly offended by the prices quoted.

Well I spent about six months researching AV equipment and looked around at 4 or 5 different companies before I called Space Coast AV. What impressed me is they did not try to sell me a bill of goods, they listen to what I wanted, I showed them some of the equipment I purchased and wanted to purchase, we sat down and discussed my solution. With a few changes and additions from the engineer we made a decision to go with them. They are extremely tech savvy and fair on price. With people like them around you do not need to internet shop their prices where right there they even saved me 800 on my HDTV purchase. These guys are not your typical installers, they a true integrators.
Work Performance
We were very impressed with the care they took in working in our home. They treated our home as if they were doing the work in their house, very clean and neat. They were extremely professional, polite and well mannered. They worked very hard and were very flexible with work hours around my work schedule. They kept us informed when they ran into difficulty, providing us with all the information we need to make an informed decision. They were on time, very fairly priced and did the work within the scope and price quote they provided.
We are extremely happy we chose Space Coast AV, they did everything we hoped and more.
They ran wiring through out the house and installed cat6 drops, which entailed having to cut some holes in the walls and ceiling, when they finished the patch work, you could not even tell they had to make cuts in the dry wall. Not just professional AV guys but drywall finishers as well.
We highly recommend them to anyone.
