" arrived a few minutes prior to the scheduled appointment and did a prompt and efficient inspection and cleaning of the chimney for a wood-burning" fireplace in an addition on the house. He also examined the original chimneys from bottom to top (in the cellar, at the fireplaces, in the attic, and with a visual inspection from outside) to help me know what I might need to do about their deteriorating condition.

-Raymond J.

"Everything went great. Called to get an estimate (which was free) and they had it to me within 2 days. The two men who fixed the chimney were very professional." They did show up 15-20 minutes late, but that wasn't a big deal. I'd definitely use again!

Angie's Answers

Most all professional chimney sweeps now utilize the National Fire Protection  211 Standard for chimneys, fireplaces , Vents and solid fuel-burning appliances for chimney inspections, which determines when and whether he has to access the roof.

There are 3 levels of inspection  The most commonly performed are Level 1 and level 2  are listed:

Level 1            Done as Annual Inspection

                      Routine cleaning of the flue

Direct replacement of a similar appliance

Level 1 inspection is recommended for a chimney under continued service under the same conditions with the continued use of the same appliance.

IN A Level 1 inspection, your chimney service tech should examine the *READILY ACCESSIBLE portions of the appliance and the chimney connection. HE will be looking for basic Soundness of the chimney structure and flue as well as the basic appliance installations and connections. HE will also Verify that  the chimney is free of obstruction and combustible deposits.

* Readily accessible Means that no special equipment is required to gain such access, ie.Ladder

LEVEL 2            Upon sale or transfer of a property

After an operating malfunction or an external event is likely to have caused damage to the chimney

Addition or removal of one or more connected appliances, or the replacement of an appliance withone of a different type, a different input rting or a different efficiency.

Prior to relining or replacement of the flue lining

Level 2 insp. are required when any changes are made to the system. Changes can include a change of Fuel Type, changes in shape or material in the flue,Replacement or addition of an appliance of a disimilar type, input rating or efficiency. Building fires, chimney fire or other seismic events as well as weather events or obvious construction defects would be indicators that a level 2 is warranted.

Level 2 includes everything in a level 1 PLUS the *Accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior including attic, crawl spaces and basements. it addresses proper clearances from combustible in accessible locations. There are no speciality tools required to open or access doors, panels, or coverings during a level 2 insp.  The level 2  insp should also include the visual inspection by video scanning equipment or by other means in order to examine the internaql surfaces and joints of all the flue liners inside the chimney structure. No removal or demolition or any permrnantely attached portions of the chimney or building structure or finish shall be required in a level 2 insp.

*ACCESSIBLE means if you can get to it with special equipment do it but you dont have to take apart anything for said access. Use of ladders and cameras just no demolition.

***THE REAL ANSWER to this question lies with the accessibility of the top of the chimney and roof type.  Most professional sweeps want to examine up close the top of the chimney for cracked masonry crowns , which is very common, Flashing issues, top view down flue, and for prefab chimneys to insp the condition of the Chase cover and cap.

Note that the use of a special tool (ladder) to gain access to the chimney is under a level 2 inspection, which can be additional costs since it is a much more thorough inspection.

It is possible to sweep and do a level 1 insp. without accessing the roof.

Also most professional sweeps have equipment that allows us to sweep the chimney with a rotary system that is operated from inside at the fireplace opening and achieve a much better cleaning than pushing brushes down from the top and without getting on the roof. We also video scan the flue from the hearth so the homeowner can be a part of that inspection or "chimney-oscopy". They see the live action of the top of the chimney and conditions that exist inside their system so when they get their report they know they are not some stock pics that could be used to sell repairs but the actual pics of the conditions they viewed in their system. And we do not have to access the roof.

If the chimney access requires multiple ladders or is a "brush with death", there could be extra cost, and the sweep would make an onsite decision regarding the ability to safely reach the top of the chimney or have to use a lesser option of binoculars or rely on experience to determine whats going on up top based on visible symptoms,  if access is too dangerous or not possible.

So don't discount a sweeps knowledge or ability on whether he gets on the roof or not. Check him out on referral sites , company web site, credentials, training and experience. Get referals and check on liability insurance and you should be able to find a sweep that can meet your need. If you are in North Carolina check us out at ClassicChimney.com. For the last 25 years we have been sweeping and inspecting chimneys, certified formerly by the CSIA for 15 years and current member of the NC Guild. give us a call  9197822879

Chimney Repair reviews in Winston Salem

Everything went great. He even called to see if I was available earlier because he could come a little earlier to do the work. He didn't take long at all and did a great job. He was very professional and personable.
- Sandra B.

When I called I expected to have both fireplaces cleaned, but when he checked and said one of them did not yet need it, saving me about $150. He carefully cleaned my basement fireplace and was careful to keep the room clean and to clean up after himself. The basement fireplace needed a new damper. I was concerned that would require ...More as special order meaning more time and $$$ but had one that would fit in his truck and quickly installed it for a reasonable $100 fee.
Following this appointment I realized I had some draft problems with my chimney and he took the time to talk me through possible solutions. Overall, I was very pleased and will continue to use his services.
- James L.

Mr. explained methods used when the house was built and reassured us that the chimney was well made and still in good condition. Small repairs would prepare the chimney for sale of the home. His willingness to explain options and discuss issues were greatly appreciated.
- Laura S.

I called Chimee on a Saturday morning requesting a quote on a chimney cleaning and installation of a chimney cap. The owner said he would send someone out that same day. Later, I got a call from the service guy and he said they were overbooked, but he could come see me Monday. ( I actually think they only have one service ...More guy ).

The service guy arrived about an hour late for my appointment Monday. Then he went on my roof for a couple of minutes and came back down to tell me I need to get my chimeny crown replaced and flasing installed. He wrote up an estimate for everything and then charged me $75.

There was no mention of a charge for estimates, when I made the appointment, so this surprised me. Then he says that they apply the $75 towards the final bill should I choose to have Chimne do the work.

I've checked with other companies and is very overpriced in my opinion. I will cut my losses with them at $75 and not work with them again. Be sure you specifically ask about a free estimate when calling service companies. You should not have to pay someone to bid on a job for you.
- William R.

When I first made the appointment the person taking the call was extremely polite and professional. I was given an appointment and requested to be added to their cancellation list since I wanted help as soon as possible. I received written confirmation with a very thorough book about what the company can do with regard to problems with structural ...More damage, advanced settling, water proofing and wet crawl spaces. Each contact I had with the company thereafter was very professional and they called in advance to remind me of the appointment, sent me information in advance to fill out so that my time was best spent when the estimator and later the crew arrived. The company EXCEEDED all my expectations and stand head and shoulders above any other foundation company I contacted about doing the work. By the time Will, one of the owners and an engineer, arrived, I had already met with 7 other companies and had paid to get an engineer's report (a NC requirement). Not only did Will treat me with the utmost courtesy and respect, he did an excellent job educating me about the variety of options available. Unlike one of his competitors, he did not try to scare me into a 'one size fits all" approach, and suggested using "push piers" to stabilize the movement rather than the method touted by the other 4 foundation repair companies on Angie's List that I had called. I eliminated all 3 of the chimney repair options due to cost. Not only did the proposed solution make the best sense, it cost less than the bid given me by the other 3 foundation repair companies.
Before the crew arrived I got an information packet with their pictures and brief biographies about each. I have NEVER BEFORE felt so well treated by any home repair company in my life. The crew arrived the day we had scheduled despite driving from the heavy snow in the mountains and assured me that they would get the job done to my satisfaction no matter what! I watched them for a while and then went back in the house.
Later that day they came to get me to show me what they were encountering. I was warned by Will and again when the crew arrived that in my area they expected to hit bedrock approximately 36 feet down but it could be much deeper. That contingency was also in the written contract. The crew was stunned that the piers were continuing to be pushed down without hitting anything substantial. Long story short it was 66 feet down with some expected additional costs because of the extra depth being outside the original bid but certainly explained in advance and understood. Other companies also had that same caveat.
I was AMAZED when my chimney came back to meet the floor in my living room without any damage to my floors and walls. The only "damage" was on my roof around the flashing for the chimney which had been pushed against new shingles leaving them "wavey". I got that flashing fixed and my house was as good as it had been before the movement occured.

I originally called to have my siding replaced, but Art noticed right away that our roof was in much worse shape and recommend we replace it right away. He did a thorough inspection and gave us an estimate that included a $500.00 discount for mentioning that we found his company through Angies's List. He said he had a team ...More that would come as soon as we were ready. Once we chose , Art came over one evening with several shingle samples of colors he thought would go well with our exterior. Since we had discussed having the siding replaced at a later date, he recommended choosing a neutral color that would go with any color we may choose later. The day of the work, Art showed up right on time at 7:30am to look over the property before the team and the load of shingles arrived. By 6:00pm that evening, we had an entire new roof and all of the debris had been cleaned up and removed. Several of my retired neighbors (who "supervised" during the day) mentioned how impressed they were with the professional behavior of the work team and how quickly the work was finished. As an added benefit, also patched small areas of the siding where it met the roof. We could not have been more pleased with the result. Right after the roof was replaced we have several days of constant rain with absolutely no problems or leaks of any kind. Art himself called to make sure everything was sealed tightly. I look forward to using again for future improvements.

Everything you'd want from a service provider: Person who came was prompt, polite, helpful, clean, organized, efficient. He explained things clearly, presented all the options. There was no sales pitch or fast talking. Everything was very straightforward. I'd absolutely recommend this company to a friend or family member.

WOW! These guys have done work for us before, but we always do our homework just to be certain we are hiring the right person. Before we called we talked to other contractors in the area to get advice and estimates. One of the folks that we called didn't even show up, the other was a blubbering idiot, and the other seemed ...More to know what he was talking about...said that he would require 30% upfront money to get started. Being disappointed with them all, we finally called . We should have done so from the start, but we were trying to be "smart" and get several viewpoints as to cost and the necessary work. We knew what we wanted would not be cheap but we didnt want CHEAP either. We wanted an honest price for honest work. We got BOTH, once again from .
He took the time to meet with us and find out what we really wanted and put up with us in the beginning with all the decisions we wanted to make (or didn't want to make). After the final meeting to go over everything he came back to us with a price. We weren't shocked by what it would cost, but it was only slightly higher than what we budgeted. That being said, he really educated us on the details of the project and afterward we were satisfied that the price was fair.
The day that work started the crew showed up and started placing protective barriers everywhere to protect the rest of our home that was not being remodeled. They kept the job clean and neat the entire time, and that meant a lot to us neat freaks. Our experience with has been incredible throught this complicated remodel project. Other than great quality work and his job leadership, we have to say that the very best thing was his willingness to openly and honestly communicate with us. He kept us informed, and was straight with us every step of the way.
Simply, they did what they said they would do. They under-promised and over-delivered in our opinion. GREAT JOB overall, and AGAIN, We will call them back for our next project.
