"When
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
came over for a first consultation, we gave him a scale drawing of what we wanted and showed him our neighbor's patio to demonstrate the look we wanted. We were going for a
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
, modern look with clean, straight lines. He seemed to understand, and he gave us the lowest quote of any of the contractors we consulted. We brought him out for a second consultation at which time we talked about the stone, the border, the drainage, the waterfall design and the mulch. He again assured us that he understood our vision and confirmed that everything was included in the cost of the quote. Then the work started, and everything went downhill form there. Although we told him we wanted the patio set in stone dust and although that was written into the contract,
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
's foreman
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
apparently decided it would be easier for him to
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
a concrete foundation and proceeded to do so. He then began to

the flagstones crooked. I alerted
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
to this problem, and he told me it was due to the dimensions of the yard. Our yard is perfectly square, and in any case, the dimensions of the yard have nothing to do with whether the stones are laid square with each other or
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
off at an angle.
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
assured us we wouldn't be able to see the crooked lines when he was done. To hide the fact the patio was laid at an angle, he put a cheap plastic border on top of the stones and squared it with the fence. Leaving aside the fact that this was an unacceptable, cheap-looking, makeshift solution, it still didn't hide the fact that the stones were laid crooked. On top of that, he laid the stones with wide, sloppy grout lines that looked more like a country path than the clean modern effect we wanted. What's worse, despite all of
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
's talk about drainage,
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
built the patio with a concave center that collects water and doesn't drain.
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
made no provision for a filter or a pump in the pond, without which the pond is not functional. So much for everything being included. The waterfall looked nice, but when I put a hose over the top of it to see how it would work (in the absence of a pump), we discovered that the water did not flow into the pond but rather flowed off the back, into the garden. Meanwhile,
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
had not put a stone border on the patio as
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
had promised us he would from the first visit. We reminded
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
we wanted this, and he told us it would cost extra. Finally, frustrated with the poor workmanship and failure to deliver what we asked for, we told
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
we wanted him to redo the stones, redo the waterfall and install the border as we had discussed. We even made it clear that we were willing to pay more to have it done the way we wanted. He responded with an email saying that he had given us a garden worth $14,000, that we were taking advantage of his generosity and "Please feel free to discuss your project with another contractor." Despite countless efforts to reach
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
by phone and email since then, we've received no response. At the end of the day, he's right that it'll be a $14,000 garden because we've had to pay someone else to come in and rip out all of his work and do it properly. In all my dealings with contractors, I've never seen anyone behave so unprofessionally.

spent a lot of time on the phone prior to the work going over the job with me, and making suggestions on other parts of our overall yard project. He provided an estimate that turned out to be right on target and quite reasonable. Despite some setbacks (like getting a late start on the first day, being under-manned, and having a jackhammer burn out), he and his crew worked hard and got things done in a timely manner."

"We met with our designer at our home and she came up with a design for the entire backyard to include some of the elements we dreamed of having (patio, fireplace, pond, lush vegetation.) She then gave us an estimate of the cost to do the entire backyard which was entirely beyond our means. We asked her to focus just on the patio and she gave us an estimate of around $15K. After going back and forth a few times on options to reduce the cost, she came up with some sale pavers, reduced the size of the patio, and the number of plantings around the patio and we finally got down to something we could afford. While our designer was creative and incorporated the types of plants and other elements we requested, we did have some trouble with her communication and accuracy throughout the process. The biggest problem we ran into was that she made a mistake in the height of the stone steps which resulted in the construction crew having to increase the height of the entire patio. The height of the finished patio then resulted in a significant slope between the patio and the retaining wall. Fortunately, the head of the landscaping department reviewed the work and fixed the problem by increasing the height of the retaining wall at no additional charge. His words to us were, "don't worry, we will make it right." Glad to see that good customer service still exists out there. In any case, another complaint we have about the designer was that she made several mistakes in the key codes for the plants on the final design. For example, we almost bought Rhododendrons when the plan really called for Knockout Roses. These two plants significantly differ in height so this would have been a big problem - the Rhododendrons would have completely blocked the view of the patio when at mature height. Unfortunately, although we brought up our concerns about the accuracy of her plan given the numerous mistakes we found, the designer never admitted fault and never so much as apologized for the errors. At the end of the day, however, we are very pleased with the workmanship of the patio and the design itself. The head of

landscaping department was helpful and the foreman was very professional. Our advice, should you decide to go with

, would be to make sure to get a designer that you can work well with, who communicates well and is detail oriented.

"Phase 1:
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
rep designed lovely overall yard plan but we didn't start in 2008 as our new addition was not quite finished and budget was tight. Rep was detailed and courteous, so we returned one year later and asked to scale back plan a bit and divide into phases. Rep agreed happilly and work was performed. Rep had lots of great ideas. We would not have thought of large stones serving as stairs. Rep and on-site job manager worked with us as job progressed to refine designed based on reality of the job. Finished product was fabulous. We would hire them again and will probably in the fall to continue with Phase 3, which will be the planting of bulbs and a perennial bed inthe new area behind the long stone wall. Also,
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
presented an initial bid that was a bit higher than our budget, and he was more than willing to work with us to

it back when asked. Very little was compromised as far as the character and look of the project. Phase 2: Old rep relocated, so we were assigned new rep,

Reed.

was courteous and full of great ideas. He suggested the low stone wall in front of elm and then brought designed to the house to view site. He was extremely commuicative, emailing daily as we worked. We told them the date of an upcoming party, and
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
always worked to make our deadline. Staff works with detail and precision. Crew is extremely clean and detailed. Site always swept and hosed down at end of day, even when job not finished.

"She was extremely knowledgeable and detailed in her analysis. She asked excellent questions regarding our overall renovation plans and recommended a hold on the landscaping until interior work was completed (contracters would need access to the house from the back and may ruin any work we put into the yard). She listed all the areas that would need work and gave me resources to find items that i could purchase myself (rainbarrels, DC government grants, porous pavers, etc). She was very considerate about budget and upfront about any design costs that we would incur on the front end. She also has a great personality. "

"They are excellent. We have been using them for about 3 years. The price depends on everything they do. Typically they do the clean up, mulching and pruning. Sometimes, they even bring more plants for me. They really take their time when they are here and do a nice job. They do great cleaning up. "

finished their work on time, just before the
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
4 holiday weekend, which may have contributed to the fact that the work was not done as carefully as we had expected. The edges of the walkway were left very uneven and the flagstones, particularly on the top and last section to be completed, were messily laid into the mortar, which had splattered onto the stones, along the house wall, the decorative guard railing, and in many spots seeped over the edges of the stones. The workers left the lawn adjacent to the walkway damaged and full of debris. spoke with
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
Scango, who then came out to look at the walkway. He agreed that the work had not been done to standard and that he would have the walkway corrected. Some days later he did indeed have most of the edges of the walkway cut and evened out and had mortar added to one uneven spot. He did not correct the messy inlay of the flagstones nor any other cleanup. I have had to spend many hard hours chipping and sanding the excess mortar off and around the edges of the flagstones. I am still not satisfied with the way our walkway or guardrail looks, but guess that this is as good as it will get.

"Work went very well overall. They came when they said they would and did a very good job of cleaning up afterward. The only glitch -- and a minor one -- was the first meeting to review the yard and get an estimate.
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
showed up a day earlier than scheduled, but it did not prove to be a problem since he could take a look at the yard and get some ideas. We were able to meet subsequently at the scheduled time.
Washington Patio Pavers Provider Name Locked
was very flexible about scheduling in order to accommodate my work day.
