"It went well over all. After looking at several contractors, we chose
. My main goal was to have the bathroom done with the fittings and" fixtures I wanted, not one of the package bathroom deals. I seldom use contractors in DC just because of the pricing/quality of work/poor contracts. I liked the detailed contract and
's suggestions for how to do the bathroom. I also appreciated that he actually knew the building codes in force unlike the other three contractors I interviewed. The job wasn't easy - remove cast iron tub, wall tile set in plaster/mortar and floor tile in mortar (1930's house). We selected the furnishings we wanted, and had
confirm they would work. There were some problems with the bathtubs when we received them - not his fault; delivery company which caused a pretty big delay. He worked around them. The framing and rough work was first class. The guys had schematics on how they would do the work. We had a pretty complicated shower valve arrangement, and he worked with the supplier to make sure all the appropriate pieces were ordered and a plumbing schematic was produced. His crew did a good job trying to keep things clean and thinking ahead on installing blocking for the grab bar, etc. The only downside is I think his crew was rushed in the end to finish up. I understand, and I have never worked on a construction project were there weren't minor problems. However in the rushing, small details got overlooked. I am the only one who will ever notice, it is just that they did such a great job on the rough-in, framing, etc. but nobody will ever see it. I would definitely use them again. In general a great contractor who sticks to the contract, and I like that all communications are in writing.
was flexible during the project, and prompt to respond.

-bryant C.

was fantastic to work with and are a very professional company.
came in to give us an estimate and worked with us" throughout the whole process, checking on the work regularly. Our kitchen renovation was more basic but we appreciated them paying attention to the details. The crew was punctual every day and made sure to clean up after themselves when they left, extremely considerate.
especially was a very thoughtful employee, so much that we'd like him to again work on other upcoming renovation projects for us. There were minor hiccups as one would expect with any renovation project but
made sure to resolve these to our satisfaction in a very timely manner. We are extremely pleased with the end result and would recommend this company to others. We will definitely consider them for future house projects.

Angie's Answers

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

Remodeling reviews in Washington DC

We have just finished our kitchen remodel with
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and couldn’t be happier.
When we were first getting our quotes,
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and Armagan were the most responsive to our ideas, and came back with the most reasonable quote. Armagan was available and captured our ideas in the bid, a price which included quality products. We choose only a few upgrades in the cabinet features, which brought the total up $350 over the initial estimate. Even with these changes, the total price was still lower than the other two estimates we received, one of which included less work (not moving basement door).
We chose to get new cabinetry, new countertops, a new farmhouse sink, a new backsplash. We also moved the location of the refrigerator and to relocate the door to the basement from the kitchen to another wall in the living room. The whole project took just over two weeks. The results look awesome, a whole new kitchen!
Throughout the process, the workmen were very respectful and cleaned up after themselves. We were very impressed with the quality and professional job they did. They asked from my input when they were unclear, and fixed issues I identified.
Armagan was also very responsive to my concerns (which typically were simply based on my inexperience with the construction process). Because we have such an old house, I was concerned that something was going to come up in the process that put us behind or would cost us more. However, if any such problems occurred, they were taken care of and the project was on budget.
Great overall experience, and the work is awesome! Highly recommend.
- Jessica B.

This was a disaster. While
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is a great guy and does excellent work. He went on vacation (on a cruise) while the project was ongoing and left me hanging. His assistant had no clue about the project.
He does not actively monitor his programs and charged exorbitant fees for items. For example he charged me 200 dollars for a 50 dollar mirror, upon noticing this, charges were then taken off.
Model home look prides themselves in providing accurate estimates, and this is far from the truth. He quoted me a price and ended up charging me a different price.
I hand to constantly push to make sure all the items were done.
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
does not monitor their project to the extent that my door knobs where changed and they installed a bathroom without a toilet holder!
I called them and they never responded..., I guess that’s because, in trust I paid them what I owed them before they finished the Job.
Please stay clear!!!! I don't recommend them!
- Ike A.

I hired JW from
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
to complete my kitchen and bathroom renovation and had
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
as the project manager for the project. Overall, I was very pleased with the work this company provided.
JW came out for an estimate and gave me pretty cool 3D kitchen design. There was a decent amount of back and forth communication via texts/phone calls/emails on the 3D kitchen and bathroom design (i.e. type and color of cabinets, size of cabinets, overall layout, etc.). Always within hours (if not minutes) JW was quick to respond. The estimate was extremely professional, easy to read, and broken down nicely into line-item buckets.
The project started and finished on time and on budget. There were a few minor hiccups along the way, but nothing extremely major. Even with the minor hiccups,
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his crew were quick to come to resolutions and to remedy the issue at hand. For example, the bathroom sink faucet was not properly installed and became very loose and unaligned after about a week of use. I let
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
know what the issue was and he was out to fix it the very next day.
If I had to do it all over again I would:
1. Spend more time picking out granite colors. (I went to the granite yard with JW and
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
. I am happy with what I have, but in retrospect would like to have spent more time viewing the different options available).
2. Investigate different cabinet options. (Once again, happy with what I have, but I am not totally convinced this is the quality of cabinet I was looking for).
3. I should have asked to have painting be included in the project. (The renovation project is "complete", but I still have to clean-up the walls and paint them. It would have been nice if I had included this piece in the project).
4. Spend more time reviewing the kitchen layout options. (I am thinking back on it now that it may have been better to have the kitchen in an "L" shape with a small bar/counter area.)
Like I mentioned previously, overall I was very pleased with the work this company provided. I really got the feeling that
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
took pride in their project. Because of this, I would not hesitate to hire them again for a future project and would highly recommend their services to others, thus the "A" rating. :) .

Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
quickly assessed the problem of water temperature not adjusting in the shower. He decided to start by replacing the valve, rather than a larger job that would have involved breaking the tile (which others advocated). He did the work and so far so good. He was responsive, prompt and fast in the work he did--terrific! He also was able to replace some kitchen hinges on doors that are problematic as well. I will definitely be calling him for the next job.
- Carol V.

Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was awesome!!! The workmanship was top notch. They are real craftsmen -- every job was done by an expert in their specialty area. They were thoroughly professional and really made sure that I was happy with the job that was being done. I was able to work with them to determine how to layout the tiles for the fireplace and the result is stunning. I ordered the custom fireplace doors from a company in Montana (Ironhaus -- really great company, too!) and the doors were shipped directly to them for the project. They consulted with Ironhaus to make sure that the installation was correct. The end result is beautiful.
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
also schedule the work around my business and holiday schedule. I can't say enough good things about this company. They are the best and I will be using them for future home renovations.
- Joanne W.

We purchased our cabinets and countertops from
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, but had them installed by our contractor as part of a home remodel. The cabinets themselves are fantastic, and
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
was responsive to all our questions. There were some problems with delivery--oddly, we ended up with a cabinet piece from a different order--but they took care of it.
- Pallavi G.

Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
advised us that they do not do work on condos in DC. I don't begrudge them from making this decision. I just wanted to post a review noting that this is their policy so other DC condo owners don't waste their time.
- Arturo G.

Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is amazing!!!! They went beyond the contract and seem to take pride in the work they do. They finished the job as agreed despite the many change request I submitted for major items like replacement of wood floors, electrical re-wiring, upgrades to amps and meter, and more than I can remember. I contracted to assess basement steps and they rebuild it. I asked them to work around a drainage pipe in the basement for a bathroom, and they rerouted the pipe and built an unbelievable bathroom. They are waiting to paint the exterior of the house for better weather so the paint will not crack. Other contractors would probably just paint without consideration of the consequences. I had some issues with the basement door which I did not contract for, along with some kitchen hardware for a dishwasher (we did not do the kitchen as it was recently upgraded, but the contractor that was hired did a crapy job, now
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
will save us and upgrade some plumbing and build a more stable platform for the new dishwasher and the marble counter top). Will I use them again...I just contracted them last week again, and ONLY trust them from now on. Kitchen work to follow. They are great. I wish I could post some before and after pictures. You would not believe the transformation of the entire house. All at a reasonable price, but more importantly, they DO IT RIGHT!!! I am proud to wear their button down shirt they provided us. Yes, the neighbors love the work, and I am sure more business will come their way after we do our house warming party.
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is simply amazing. The owner
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
and his Chief Financial Officer,
Washington DC Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
, are just great people, same with everyone in their business. I wish every service provided the customer support they provide. Did I mention they installed the wrong shower head...a nice one, but my wife asked for a unique shower head. They reinstalled immediately just for her. Amazing!!! Hire these folks. You will not regret it. Really wish I could post before and after pictures...you would be amazed!!! Update to follow after the plumbing work and painting of exterior of house. Did I mention they did a fantastic job on the back deck...wow. I could ramble a long time on their competence. Did I mention AMAZING enough, and yes, they take pride in their top ratings with Angie's List. Awards all over their office.
