"My wife and I scheduled an appointment for
(largely based on Angie's List reviews). They were very nice over the phone and in person" but they failed to follow-up with any sort of estimate (they promised a quote within 5 business days and never even bothered to contact us again). We are perplexed. I don't have any problem with them and we ended up finding another great contractor but want to keep the integrity and usefulness of Angie's List reviews so I feel like I have to provide an honest rating. It is not professional to waste people's time on a Saturday. I would have given them an "F" but, as mentioned, they were very polite so that should count for something.

"Remodel bathroom and kitchen in sequence. Bathroom project: Pros: Quality of work was excellent handled by
and his crew. Project was" finished with a few days delays (2.5 weeks instead of 2 weeks). Cons:
, the lead person handling initial customer contact was very responsive and friendly before contract signing, but after contract signing he was a different person. He has limited interest in serving customers well. As part of service he indicated he would accompany to purchase materials to be used in project. However he has no patience. In one case he stopped taking my calls and asked me to “call his assistant to set-up an appointment” to speak to him on phone. He expects a customer to pick out everything with 1 -2 visits. Beyond that it is waste of time for him (as he needs to focus on getting new business from other customers) and he kept claiming that he is not making any money (despite charging me $12,000 just for labor which increased subsequently- read below). He had promised a timeline, then informed me that his cousin walked away so he would have less crew available (in the end this was not a big issue since they finished with just 2-3 days delay). Be very careful in what is actually written in contract. He had conveyed to me that the commission of 10-15% they charge on materials purchased is by splitting the 30% discount HBR has from suppliers between customer and HBR. However, even in cases where HBR did not have any discounts from suppliers on items on sale, HBR still tried to charge me the commission (in such case I could have purchased the items without HBR). In course of this project I was present almost daily to monitor work. Kitchen project:
tried to rush me into selecting a kitchen that I was not satisfied with (again he is not interested in taking time to serve customers well but instead you feel pressured to move quickly so he can go take care of other business). I took my time to select a kitchen I liked. Project was delivered behind schedule (6-7 weeks instead of 3 weeks). The timeline
indicated was not realistic in contrast to what
(his brother) indicated after they started. Unfortunately I was not present personally present to monitor progress for this project so I have impression they slacked by working on other projects. I had concerns about some items
promised they do without charging extra (for example installing lighting under kitchen cabinets, or replacing light fixtures) but which
charged me for because he said it was not specified in the contract. I ended up paying a couple thousand dollars more than the original contract. On kitchen cabinets measurement side, it turns out
overlooked three important items: (1) an island wall had to be demolished unexpectedly and rebuilt since cabinet was oversized, (2) a drawer was hitting oven door, so required some adjustment to gas pipe of oven to make more space in back for oven, (3) dimension of countertop turns out to partly cover a drawer when opened- after countertop was installed, it was too late to make any adjustments. A good/experienced kitchen designer would likely have anticipated and avoided some of these items before work starts. The project was delivered partly unfinished with various punch list items that showed sloppy finishing work that was sub-standard compared to the bathroom project. After a complete walk-through/inspection,
took care of all punch list items well, so final product was excellent. During the kitchen project, I never received any more contact from
and to this date (1-21-2015) he never bothered to contact me to check if I was satisfied or to thank me for my business. I ended up spending about $45,000 or more on labor plus materials for both bathroom and kitchen projects. Yet I have yet to receive from HBR a complete statement showing all charges and payments with receipts (for materials they purchased using my credit card) so that I can check all items and also for tax records. They sent receipts for payments I made in bits and pieces so it is hard to reconcile everything. They had also indicated they provide refunds for returned unused materials (of which there were some) but this was not done yet. Conclusion: I may use HBR again for quality of workmanship. However, one must be very careful about what is promised (make sure it is all clearly documented in contract to avoid any misunderstandings), ensure they will be monitored daily or every other day (despite that one of
’s “selling point” was that they take care of everything for customers even when they are overseas- which was not consistent with my experience), check carefully promised completion timeline (by double checking it with
who does the actual labor with his crew).
would do well to be more patient and available to serve customers until project is completed in same way he does before a contract is signed. By contrast,
and his crew were very pleasant, patient, responsive, listened well, and were generally willing to take care of small details here and there.

Angie's Answers

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

Remodeling reviews in Washington

I have not heard from
Washington Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
in a week to schedule my appointment so I requested a refund for the Big Deal.
- Pru S.

I contacted GBK to re-do my dated kitchen in my townhouse. I have lived in my townhouse for going on 14 years and the kitchen was very dated. My primary contact was Adem, he was very professional, friendly and responsive. We went to their showroom facility where they had a wide range of high-quality cabinets, countertops, flooring and fixtures to choose from. Adem also was very helpful in providing guidance on good color combinations. The work itself was slated to begin the first week in December, right after Thanksgiving, and Adem provided a time estimate of 3 weeks. They actually completed the job in less than two and a half weeks, and came in on weekends to ensure all of the work would be complete before we left for the holidays. The workers were very professional and kept the work area from spilling over to the rest of the house. We are very happy with the end result more than a year later, and we are planning on hiring Adem and GBK to re-do our master bath as well.
- Jenny H.

This project couldn't have gone more smoothly. They were prompt and couteous at the walk-through. The proposal came within the timeframe they stated. Everything happened on schedule. The only delays were ones caused by me. The work was detailed orientated. Incredible attentuion to detail. I received constant updates.
The management of my condo building (The Radius) said they were probably the most quiet, clean and courteous group they have ever worked with.
If you need a job done, this is the company to hire.

It was PERFECT. I loved every minute of the project. Very professional and responsive. The only issue is one of cost:

's group does such a good job but you pay for it. I didn't mind the extra cost b/c I could go to work and never worry about a thing. This year, I wanted some more work done, but the estimates were just too high for my budget. If I had the extra money, I would have hired this group in a minute. The whole operation is FIRST rate. I set up an appointment for an estimate for a full bathroom remodel.
Washington Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
kindly offered to meet on a Saturday morning, which is outside business hours and i really appreciated that offer. However, I called the day before to confirm the appointment but was not able to reach anyone. I left a message but did not receive a call back until the next day, 1 hour before the scheduled appointment letting me know their son is sick and they could not come. They also stated that he had been sick all evening and night before. When i set the appointment, i told them that I had to also confirm access to the condo with the current renters and that this was a bit challenging to obtain. It was frustrating that they did not give me more notice on the appointment since clearly they knew for several hours that they would need to take care of their sick son. If this had been an isolated incident i would understand, but it seems to be a pattern with them judging from other reviews on this site. Family emergencies do come up, but it seems like this happens more often to this particular family.
- Laura H.

The work took longer than originally specified, though this was the fault of another vendor, not

My only complaint is that I
Washington Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
't assertive enough to insist on a drawing that didn't have changes I really didn't want.
He wanted to move the appliances around and I don't particularly want to. I think that will just add expense to the project with no benefit. The final drawings reflect more of his ideas than mine. That said, I did get some suggestions that I like and it was a good opportunity to get me thinking about what I want in the end.
I'm certainly glad I did it.
