"They listened to my needs well and made changes on the spot. They had a pleasant crew but the supervisor was hard to track down. The work took about 6 weeks to complete.

"The contract was signed in late October. After leaving a half-dozen messages, finally threatening to cancel the contract and get my money back, they sent someone" to come and install the posts. And now three weeks later, still waiting for them to finish the job. Not once have they ever called me. The work so far has been fine, but their complete disregard for me as a customer has been painfully evident. I can only guess that as a small residential customer, I'm pretty low on their list of priorities. If I could do it again, I'd go with a smaller company that might actually answer the phone when I call.

#AskAngie: Tips for Dealing with Flaky Contractors

Dear Angie: I gave a fencing contractor a $1,300 deposit on a $2,600 job. Months after we signed a contract, no work has been done. What should I do?

I would say depends on several things:

1) what % of the job is $400 ?

2) how good is the warranty - against all types of failure, or what - cedar fences usually fail in one of two ways - tornado/hurricane/waves/flood/car collision takes them out, or the posts (if not treated timber) rot out. The fence itself will change color and get fuzzy as it weathers, but should last 15-20 years in most areas.

3) generally, a fence is not something you would pay for a warranty on - if properly put up and with concreted-in copper chromate or copper napthalate treated posts (the green preservative) should last a long time and not need warranty work basically till the fasteners fail or the fence slat boards split too badly.

4) if I was going to spend extra money on a wood fence, it would be for a good quality penetrating sealer, not steel posts.

We enjoyed working with
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
,
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
, and the whole ACE Team. Everyone was friendly, professional, and hard working. We had some snags with the long DC permitting process, but the work itself was done as quickly as possible and we think the end result is fabulous!
We had several estimates for the project and ACE was by far the most professional and prepared to do the project we wanted.
It was easy to trust
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
with the project from the moment he came out for the estimate because he has so much experience with each of the things we wanted to do. He had a great sense of how long everything would take, who he would need to bring in, and was able to tell us what to expect with DC permits. He quickly provided us with an incredibly detailed estimate of the scope and cost of work and materials.
I was especially impressed with the office manager,
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
, who was extremely patient and helpful when it came to all of the administrative aspects of the project. She went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure everything went smoothly with our neighbors which I truly appreciated.
Because ACE is so popular, we had to wait several weeks before
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
was available to come over for an estimate and then it took some time before they could get started. It was definitely worth the wait and we're very happy we chose this company.
I highly recommend
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
and Fence!

One of the first major projects in our new house was to install a new fence to secure our pets. We called the big gun in town and were NOT impressed at all with the service or price and their reviews reinforced our opinion. Searching Angie's List we found
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
and
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
& Fence. From the first contact to the last communication everything was done very professionally and in a timely manner.

Our project was not without it's hiccups. The manufacturer forgot to make the gates for our project which delayed things a bit. Then we got hit with a spate of rain and freezing temps which delayed it further. All in all the job took a few days longer than expected but
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
and his team kept us posted every step of the way.

We are totally thrilled with the outcome of the project. It looks great and we are looking forward to the spring when we can complete the landscaping and host our first BBQ.

Wish we had more jobs for them to do. We highly recommend this great company.

Initially, I got a very prompt response and an individual came out the next morning to perform an estimate. While we were told to expect an estimate later that day (Sunday), we never got one. We contacted the individual and were told that we'd get the estimate on Wednesday. We never got the estimate and our next inquiry went unanswered. It was probably for the best as the individual couldn't answer questions about how one of the gates that we requested would be installed. He simply stated that the installers would have to figure it out. We ended up going with another company who could install the gates and answer our questions at the time of the estimate.

We needed just one side of our yard and two gates installed so it was a smaller job. We had 2 other contractors show up but never even give us a quote. On the other hand,
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
was always very responsive and gave us a quote on the spot. When they showed up to do the work, they were on time and put up the fence and gates very quickly. They also did a great job matching my existing fencing. My neighbor (a contractor flipping the house next door) was so impressed that he hired them to fence his yard.

I usually don't take the time to write reviews such as this, but I would like to on behalf of Pampas.
This job took about five days with 2-3 people working full time. The yard was in horrible shape, and the guys did a great job in creating a new outdoor space. I would fully recommend them to anyone else. I collected three other bids, and this job was the cheapest. I have no doubt the quality of this job would have been just as good as the competitors. My only minor quibble to anyone who would consider something similar is to NOT have a fixed timeline in your mind. I wanted the job done within a couple of weeks after the purchase of the "big deal," but it was six weeks later that the job was finished. However, that was due to weather and the fact that this company seemed to have quite a few other jobs on the books before me. I was impressed that once the job did begin, the workers were there almost every day to get the job done, working right until sunset. My biggest peeve with contractors is when they juggle multiple jobs and you only see them sporadically. This was NOT the case with Pampas.
One last minor suggestion to them would be to clean up just a bit better. They left quite a bit of crumbled rock pieces & dust from the rebuilt stairs right in front of my door, but it was easy for me to sweep it up.
Also, I requested to see a sample of the brick before it was installed, but it seemed like that was going to delay the project further--it didn't seem like the contractors kept samples of pavers on their truck. I picked from a picture on the Internet, but I was very pleased with how similar the stone was to the picture.
The new wrought iron fence was installed beautifully and leveled, too. There were no differences between the bid and the final bill, and I was happy they accepted American Express.
Lastly, MAJOR KUDOS for thorough and effective communication with Marcio, the contractor. Our primary communication throughout the project was through text message, and he was VERY responsive. He came on site one day and I showed him a few things, which he addressed properly.
I've chosen many different contractors to work on various parts of my rehabbed house, and Pampas was the best I've worked with in the last two years.

Fantastic. From day one, when
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
came to see the property, he listened closely to my ideas, asked good questions, and brought true expertise and some really good new ideas to the project. He gave me a range of options using different materials (and price points) and walked me through the pros and cons of each. Because the slope of the property is uneven and the house is on a corner with heavy foot traffic, there were a number of concerns and tradeoffs to be made. I really appreciated
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
's depth of knowledge, professionalism, and creativity -- far surpassing others with whom I spoke about the project.

Unfortunately I have to update my former review of April 2011 and my comments are not positive. As reflected in my initial review, we had a good experience with them at installation. However, we had a problem with the fence as they did not install one of the posts in concrete as was specified in the original contract. This was not identified until this year when the lean in the fence became rather pronounced. I contacted them to request they come look at it. It took multiple calls before I finally reached a receptionist. I was appalled at the response. I was told the fence was installed too long ago for them to have any responsibility. I pointed out that the problem we needed them to look at was the result of them not performing the installation as specified in the original contract. This was not the result of normal wear and tear or even a defect in the product. It was the result of them not doing the work we paid for. She told me that regardless it was no longer their issue as the fence was installed too long ago. I requested a manager call me as I would like to talk with them. No one returned my call in spite of two follow-up calls from me asking to discuss. While I appreciate that the fence was installed three years ago and typically problems of this nature are identified sooner, it does not address the fact that this company did not perform the work that we paid for as specified in our contract.
We paid for work that was not performed and this company doesn't even have the professionalism to respond to my call. It is beyond disappointing. It's so much easier to be a responsive company when courting customers but the true strength of an organization is better evaluated by how it responds to mistakes. Unfortunately this company is interested in the quick buck and demonstrates no accountability for its work. Pass on these folks

The start of the process begin with the delivery of the stair parts, it was delayed by a few hours, causing me to miss
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
that entire day. The installer did a last minute cancellation on the day of installation, and it pushed back installation another 5 days. My husband, however, had to miss a day of work because the installer did not cancel until the day of. Once the installation finally began, it took longer than the expected 2 days. We had to schedule for another installer to come a week or so later to finish the job. Overall, the work is good and the staff we interacted with were very nice and seemed professional. However, the delays in the job became quite frustrating.
Washington Fence Installers Provider Name Locked
Stairs did give us a price adjustment for all the delays, but I think if I could avoid the hassle I would -- I'm likely not going back to them again.
