"They refinished an old writing desk (it was my grandmother's -- one of our few heirlooms from her) and did a tremendous job; they also had to rebuild a piece" of the desk that had broken off years ago, and you would never know it had been missing. The finished piece is beautiful -- in fact, they discovered that it originally was a different finish (it had acquired a lot of grime over the years). They were extremely responsive and flexible at every stage, including: 1) while getting an estimate (providing different estimates for different combinations of tasks), 2) picking up the furniture from our house (doing so when most convenient for us), 3) working with us to select a stain for the finished desk (letting us visit the store on a Saturday afternoon when we happened to be in the area and trying out several options), and 4) delivering the finished piece. There were some original labels and stamps on the desk, which they made sure to preserve -- that was a nice bonus touch. Friendly throughout the process, and the price was very competitive compared to other estimates (they also honored an Angie's List coupon). Highly recommended!!

"The entire experience was very pleasant.
, the owner, fully explained what he planned to do at the time I made the appointment. They were" very punctual. When they saw my dryer
said the price would be lower because of the way the vent ran from it. The standard trap would not fit because the vent was larger than typical.
made a suitable wire trap which looked better than the standard plastic dryer vent trap.
and his competent son-helper d the work quickly and professionally. They did a good job of cleaning up the tons of straw that the birds had stuffed into the vent. I mentioned that rain gutter had pulled away from the roof and the roof tiles had bent to go under the gutter and asked if they could repair it. When it rained the water came down right over the front door which meant I was hit with water when I used the door when it rain.
's son repaired the gutter at no cost. I really appreciated that because I would have had to call a roofing company who would have charged a considerable sum even though the repair required was relatively

Antique collecting is one of the most popular leisure activities in the United States. Due to their intrinsic value, antiquated items are either collected for investment and profit-making purposes or as display pieces, prized as heirlooms.

A key to enjoy your art or antique collecting hobby is to find items that excite you as opposed to collecting for strictly financial upside, says Buxton. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Carol V. of Orlando, Fla.)

Angie's Answers

Hi, benterrific.

Keep checking around at the auction houses and antique dealers. There are a few in your area that are highly rated. The bigger auction houses should have qualified appraisers. You might also check with your local art museum or fine art gallery. Just like we recommend for big home repair projects, shop around to get the best price.

I found out the hard way in the military that it depends on the product. Some silver polishes will turn brass and copper black with instant tarnish and etch them, so check the label. Some types can be used for any soft metal, some not. I suspect it depends on the pH of the product, or whether it has aommonia in it. And of course if you do decide to try it, do the center bottom (where it sits on the table) first so you can see if it is causing problems.

Brasso is probably the top name in the industry - they make both liquid and treated cloth polishing products both for specific metals, and general polishing ones.

I would ask local antique shops and art stores (ones selling art and frames, not galleries) if they repair antiques, AND for references, so the repair does not decrease its value unecessarily. In many cases the old frame is worth more than the painting !
You could also ask local art museums who they use to repair/rehab frames, if they do not do it themselves.

Antique Dealing reviews in Washington DC

Washington DC Antique Dealers Provider Name Locked
came to house and gave us estimate and took pieces back to his shop. He completed work in estimated time and for estimated cost and delivered in excellent condition.

Great warehouse to located salvage, antique, hard to find, recycled materials. They do not perform services. This is a place you go to look for a replacement to that old light fixture, or a old countertop you want to refinish yourself, or perhaps you are an artist and need some inspiration. They have great DIY classes as well.

Was given a good price. Had to be ordered because he does not keep
stock of high-cost items, so expect some wait time. I picked it up to
avoid delivery charges. They were very courteous and pleasant to deal
with, and I appreciated supporting a local business rather than going
with a national vendor.

This is about the fifth or sixth time this year that I had them work on some of my furniture and I am always amazed at the finished product. The job was fantastic! I have learned to just tell them what I would like and let them do the magic. They are the experts and they do an expert job. In fact, I just sent them another group of items to work on.

It was one of the most perfect experiences that I have had with furniture refinishing. They picked up the pieces. Told me the cost and anticipated return date. They delivered the furniture in perfect condition, put it in place. And to top it all off - they finished the job in record time (early).

- James H M.

I am so pleased. They saved a beloved carved wingback chair in the first instance and now have shown how well they handle the different challenges of modern materials and forms. My living room is transformed thanks to their work.
