"I have worked with a lot of fine companies, and some that weren't so fine, but
is I believe the best service company I've ever" worked with. They came out promptly to give us a bid, we decided on the work to be done and the date to do it and everything happened exactly as planned. No glitches whatsoever.
, the owner, and his men did everything well and the floors look spectacular! And I'm very picky. Good job, guys!!!

-Kathy D M.

"it all went incredibly well. Since moving to the area , this is by far the best service I have experienced! The company is family owned and they are the most honest," reliable, proud, hard working people. From the moment I was in the showroom until they finished the job, I can tell you that there is nothing I can complain about. They show up on time, clean up, (daily), any debris, clutter, etc. The floors look fantastic. They are very meticulous in making sure the floors are laid properly. In addition to the furniture, they even helped with moving items to and from rooms, they I was unable to carry myself. I had them place rugs under furniture when the floors were finished and they put up with my changing decisions with good humor. I would not even look at anyone else if you are looking for flooring. Sheaves is the place to go!!! On a side note, I had two other estimates, prior to Sheaves. Not only were they more expensive but (after Sheaves measured my floors, found out the first company that had come to measure floors (when the house was empty), had over-measured by 300 square feet. That is almost the size of two additional guest room. Sheaves did repeat the measurements and confirmed the discrepancy. That was a huge lesson for me!!! Thanks, again
. I love my floors!!!! See you when we finish our basement

Hardwood Flooring

Few home improvement choices add as much character and warmth — not to mention resale value — as hardwood flooring. But before hiring a flooring contractor to install or repair hardwood flooring, it’s important to know both its advantages and disadvantages.

Natural variations in your hardwood flooring reflect the time of year, as humidity levels rise and fall.

While there are still those who prefer the more traditional narrow planks, the wide plank trend is gaining momentum. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Bruce N. of New York)

What’s old is exciting and new as antiqued finishes and whitewashing techniques perk up wood flooring choices.

Angie's Answers

From the wall street journal online:

"Etiquette and tipping experts agree that tipping a contractor and his employees isn't expected because contractors offer to do a job for you at a specific price. Any extra money they would want would be built into their bid. Also, it's a business relationship rather than one where they are performing a personal service for you like a waiter or a maid. But if the employees do extra jobs around the house, then experts say it is appropriate to tip a cash amount equivalent to the task; "tip gifts" such as cookies and drinks can count. "The key to tipping is whether or not it was outside the scope of what was normally expected," says Mark Brenner, author of "Tipping for Success!"

My opinion is that a little bit of courtesy (snacks, drinks, expression of appreciation etc.) goes a long way and upon completion of their work you feel compelled by a job well done to offer a little extra in the form of a tip - go for it, but do not feel obligated.
Agreed.  If you have existing cracking in porcelain you need to know the cause first.  I don't know of any reputable contractor that would dare install tile over existing tile.  Also, any manufacturer warranties for defects would be null due to improper installation.  Did the contractor offer this solution or did you ask for it?  The mear fact that he is agreeing to or offering it tells me you need to leave this guy for someone who knows what they are talking about before he does only half the job which will have to be redone in the near future, costing you more in the long run.

I get so many calls from customers that were talked into a "cheaper" way to do something only to find the work very sub-par.  The sad part is they are out the money they spent in the first place along with the additional amount I have to charge just to undo what the first contractor did before I can do it right.  This floor could end up costing you double what it should if it's not done right.

Hardwood Flooring reviews in Charleston

I wanted my hardwood oak floors refinished at my house and called several vendors on Angie's List to get a quote.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
called back the same day and came out later that afternoon to write up a quote. Other vendors did not call until several days later.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
made quick work and was very professional throughout the process. The floor looks great and did not cost as much as other reviews I have read on other vendors' pages. I would highly recommend
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and will be calling back in the future if I decide to have more work done.

Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
was a perfect gentleman. As my wife said at dinner on the night they finished, "He did everything he said he would. I couldn't be happier."
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
started when he said he would and completed a day early. His crew was polite; they worked unattended and cleaned up nicely at the end of each day.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
himself was onsite much of the time. The completed floor is beautiful!
- A James L.

As the pre-work process ensued,
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
was a very
pleasant man to work with and we were excited about getting our new
floors. We were pleased with the
installation of the new wood and the way it laced in with the existing
wood. We were, however, very
disappointed with the finishing (one coat of stain and 3 coats of water based
poly) performed on all the floor, new and existing.
The floor has the appearance that the workers poured puddles
of stain, then allowed the puddles to remain too long before the stain was
spread. We
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
’t know with certainty
that this is how the spots were created, but this theory is supported by
several observations. The spots were on
the floor as soon as the workers completed the job. The worst spots are comparable in size,
circular/oval spots, 4-5 boards wide, and in a pattern consistent with someone
pouring a puddle of stain, taking a couple of steps, pouring another puddle,
taking a couple of steps, pouring another puddle, and so on. The perimeter of the spots is mid-board and
remains a continuous arc from board to board.
These unsightly spots are on the top surface of the boards.
When the
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
workers returned to put the furniture back
into place, we complained about the dark spots on the floor. The workers responded that the spots were
normal, replaced the furniture and left. As time went by, we became more convinced that the spots were not normal
and we asked
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
to advise us of how he proposed to correct this
apparent workmanship error in the finishing of the floors. Mr.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
came by our home and agreed that
the spots were not normal. He told us that he would fix the floors, but since he wasn’t sure why the spots were
there, he wanted to have a flooring expert come in and investigate the reason for the spots.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
’s supposed expert came to our home in January 2015. He conducted several tests and took
several pictures. He left a business card claiming to have a “Professional License” from NWFA. A few days later, Mr.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
forwarded us a copy of the report prepared by the person he hired, and told us the spots were
the result of excessive moisture in our subfloor. He then said he would not fix our floors
unless we paid him. The report listed
three possible causes (liquid spills, residue from improper cleaners or continued
moisture rising from the subfloor). The liquid spills (unless they were puddles of the first coat of water-based poly)
or the use of improper cleaners made no sense as the spots were there before we
used the floors. It also made no sense as to why a competent flooring company would install hardwood floor over the
top of subflooring containing excessive moisture or why the spots would be on
both the new hardwood and existing hardwood that had been installed for over 12 years and never had this spotting issue until
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
refinished them. Since Mr.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
was including the report
from the person he hired as a basis to not fix what appears to be errors by his
workers unless we paid him, we sent our questions/concerns to Mr.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
expert in the hopes of him revising his report to be more accurate and
complete. Unfortunately, he did not address any of our questions or concerns and provided this response: “Are you accusing me of bias because I was hired by
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
? If so, let's clear the air of this ‘serious’ accusation before I go any
farther. I don't care if my mother installed the wood floors, I wouldn't cut her any slack or show favoritism. It
seems that every time a report is written that doesn't benefit one side,
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
foul and bias. Where does my report show bias, and what leads
you to believe that bias was shown to either side?” Since this person
claimed to have a professional license, and this response did not seem very
professional, we contacted NWFA whose vice president said: “We grant Certifications. We
are not a licensing authority.” This embellishment of credentials of the
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
hired inspector further diminished
our ability to trust
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
then addressed our belief (that the spots were most likely from stain
soaking into the wood too long before it was spread) by saying that his company
did not apply any stain, only 3 coats of water based poly. When we pointed out that the stain was on our
invoice and receipt, he recanted saying that they did apply stain but that the
cause of the dark stains remains from moisture.
He now contends that when the floors were installed the subfloor moisture
content was less than 8% in May (a typically humid month) and that the moisture
exceeded 10% in January (typically a dry month). He still hasn’t explained why these dark
stains now exist on floor that did not have any dark stains on them for the 12
years before his company refinished them.
He has offered to discount the price for his company to refinish the
floors again, but insists that we must pay for them to do what appears to be
correction of their errors.
We then contacted a different flooring company about possibly having our floors
refinished. When we asked their representative his opinion about our dark stains, he responded that it appeared
to him that the stain was allowed to soak into the wood too long before it was spread.
We are still exploring our options for resolution.
Meanwhile, we do not recommend
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and would not use them in
the future.

Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
installed Natural Maple hardwood floors in our single story home.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
is very knowledgeable, professional and courteous. He made excellent suggestions, including a recommendation to install maple shoe molding to match the maple floors, something none of the other contractors we consulted had recommended.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
showed up on time and completed the work well within the estimated time. They cleaned up thoroughly when they were finished and gave us instructions on how to properly clean and care for our new floor. The work finished on a Friday, and by the following Monday, one of the boards in the master bedroom had developed a crack along its length, such that I snagged my socks as I walked across - it would put a
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
in bare feet. I notified
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
that day, and he arranged for
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
to return Wednesday of that same week to replace the board. When I arrived home on Wednesday,
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
had come and gone; I couldn't tell which board had been replaced and everything was clean. I was very impressed with their quick response. The only complaint I had was that
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
is slow to respond to initial requests for quotes and scheduling. However, the other independent contractors we spoke to were also slow to respond. I believe this is because they don't have support staff. As small business owners, they do everything themselves, and it does keep the costs down. It is a trade-off you'll want to consider; they are artisans and professionals, and they don't work for a big box chain with a large support staff. Ultimately, the slow response time made no difference to our installation schedule (so I really don't have a complaint!). As another reviewer noted, they are busy because they are very good. Be patient; you will be extremely pleased with the results. I would highly recommend

Parts are really good, some are not perfect. He initially estimated it to be a 3-4 day job but it took 7 days. He is a really hard working guy.

Excellent contractor.
Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
is responsive, professional, and great at finding solutions for the little surprises that pop up whenever you're remodeling -- especially with an older house. His team is highly skilled, hard-working and diligent. They finished this project faster than I expected and did a great job cleaning up. Terrific experience. I will be calling

Charleston Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
was prompt, very friendly, responsive and professional. He really knows his stuff. They quality of their work was excellent. Their price was slightly higher than others who quoted, but we felt it worthwhile given the quality of their work.
- Jeff A.

They were great and the floors came out great. They did a nice job. They got the job done in a reasonable amount of time. The cleanup was good.
