Most people enjoy sitting in front of a fire on a cold day, but traditional, wood-burning fireplaces come with a few disadvantages. They tend to waste energy, require maintenance and pose some risk. Read this guide to discover several alternatives that provide the same ambiance, but with fewer downsides.

Dear Angie: How much can I expect to pay to have my wood fireplace converted to gas? Our house is about 30 years old. The bottom of the fireplace looks like it's easily accessed through the basement. The conversion would involve running 30 to 50 feet of gas line. — Thomas M., Cincinnati, Ohio

He hasn't legally abandoned the job as long as he is still showing up and doing something, even if it is very little, from time to time.  You'll have to fire him first.  Have documentation that the job is not being done in a timely manner, showing when he has and has not worked.  Be ready for a fight and probably a legal battle since he will likely still want more money or won't refund money paid for incomplete work.

Change the locks and inform the contractor their services on your property are terminated.  Tell him if anyone representing his company enters your property they will be considered trespassing and will be prosecuted.  Then hire another company to check the work he has done to make sure it is right.  Somehow I doubt it is given the nature of his work ethic.  Then have the new contractor repair any bad workmanship and finish the job.  Keep records as any documented things that have to be redone will help your case against the first contractor.

I would recommend finding a good hearth retailer in your area and work with them to select a stove that is right for your home. They should also be able to arrange for certified installer to handle the installation. Keep in mind many areas require a city or county permit for the installation, and it may be wise to have the chimney and fireplace inspected by a certified chimney sweep beforehand.

Fireplace Repair reviews in Oregon

They were incredibly professional and responsive. They went above and beyond to install the remote controlled igniter, having to make several trips to get the right parts, so that I could surprise my wife for her birthday.
I would absolutely use them again in the future.

Bill was on time. He cleaned and inspected the gas fireplace. He pointed out potential problems and made suggestions. He was thorough, explained what he was doing and why. Fireplace looks like new. I would certainly recommend

Things went very well from start to finish.
Oregon Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
was my first contact at the store, he went over all the product features and setup the onsite estimate.

came out to get the measurements and see what needed to be done to get the old fireplace out, and gave recommendations on what to install (

I was looking for a nice
Oregon Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
after we remodeled our family room, including installing gas logs and refacing our fireplace surround.
I had originally intended to just have a free-standing screen on the mantle, but when I saw the gorgeous custom doors available from the
Oregon Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
, I knew that look would be an amazing addition to the overall look of the room.
Before our remodel, we had a wood burning fireplace with just a

brass bar and mesh screen. Because California Spare the Air days are so frequent, it made having a fire a far too rare thing - not to mention the mess it can be to create and clean up after. We installed gas logs, and refaced our fireplace. I then contacted
Oregon Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
to get a quote for fireplace doors. (after his initial visit, I learned that they can install the gas logs as well and really wished we had gone with them for the entire project).
Oregon Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
responded promptly and made an appointment to see our project. He listened to our needs, showed us some pictures, gave us an estimate, and provided a timeline for the project. We decided to proceed so he took some measurements of our opening.
About 2 weeks later,
Oregon Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
came back with the frame portion of the door for a fitting. At that time, we decided on a final design and finish.
He was back within two more weeks with the finished doors and installed them. They are extremely substantial and the look exceptionally nice with the stone on the fireplace.
We were thrilled with the service and professionalism, and of course, the product.
I don't think the price for this quality is out of line, so I'm rating my entire experience an A. I would give
Oregon Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
an A+ if I could!

DO NOT: Do Not Use the Company's Expert Technicians to install the fireplace. Items were left uninstalled and other things incorrectly according to local building code.
In a discussion with the salesperson, he stated that his experts could install the fireplace faster and better than the contractor. So we went with him. A meeting was held a week after contact, and it was another week before the installers came to the house--2 weeks after the appointment was made.
However, upon "completion" of the work, the fireplace was installed flush with the studs, not leaving room for the fireproof wall material and the rock tile over that. The outer covering would have been almost 2 inches outside the installation. On top of that, the routing of the flue was not as described and the vent for the hot air was not installed at all. An electrical hookup was done inside a wall with the plug reachable by removing the computer works in order to reach it.
The Fireplace person did offer to have a meeting a week after being notified of the difficulty and would then schedule a repair. This, however, would have put the "repair" two weeks after the general contractor (GC) finished the installation in a much faster, cleaner, installation. The fireplace people called us, the customers, to state that the TV we wanted to install was 2 inches too wide. If they had stayed on their installation and not worried about the TV, which the GC, said would be installed differently than first thought, and if they had only talked with the workers who were there, some things might not have had to have been done.
The store representative stated that the expert "technicians are paid hourly and at a rate higher than general laborers due to their qualifications." The rep stood up for his workers which was good. However, a
Oregon Fireplace Contractors Provider Name Locked
"I'm sorry!" would have saved a lot. For the installation to cost $3000+, we did not get our money's worth.
DO: DO Use your GC to install the fireplace. A comprehensive installation booklet comes with the fireplace and the schematics for electric and gas lines are included. A competent builder can install it, a gas plumber can put in the lines, and an electrician can hook up the electrical. All for less than those who charge more for expert installation.

The installation was done expertly. The door was defective and didn't close properly. The techs drove back to their shop about 45 minutes each direction and brought me another one the same day. Awesome. the product is excellent.

I did not want to take the time and hassle to pursue a refund, because I don't know gas fireplaces well enough to determine if my experience merited a refund. I am not a fan of writing a less than stellar review. There are way too many factors to consider before trashing a small local business provider on this site - does the contractor have the flu, marital spate first thing in the morning, etc. If I can't say something positive, I would prefer not to waste my time writing a review - unless it is absolutely atrocious service, but truly how often does that happen with vendors that are presumably vetted for this site?
