did a fabulous job. They are so easy to work with. We loved coming home to see how much they accomplished every" day. They laid drop cloths on the floors every day, then cleaned up...neat as a pin! His suggestions were always spot on. If he was unsure how we wanted something, he left a note and we explained what /how we wanted it to look. We couldn't be happier at the end result. And we definitely will recommend this professional company for the quality of the workmanship.

was very prompt in coming and giving us an estimate. He gave us two choices on the patio door that he thought would work. We went with" Jeldwen patio door with vinyl on outside and stainable wood on the inside as we get lots of weather on this back door and vinyl would never have to be painted! We wanted stained wood on the inside to match our cabinets.
took measurements and ordered the door for us (it took about a month - which is normal amount of time when ordering a custom door such as this). Door came in and
called to set up day to deliver it and to get started. Christmas Holidays were too busy around here for construction project and weather didn't cooperate with us so we had to reschedule several times - don't want to be installing new door in the cold and rain! Holidays over and good weather finally so
and his 2 guys got to work. First day -
and one guy worked on removing the old patio door and moulding while 3rd guy started stripping and sanding the front doors. New patio door and moulding (inside and outside) was installed. Looks great - nice and level and VERY solid! Not like builder grade door that was on there! Second day, crew arrived early as we needed to get the stain on the doors so they could dry by nighttime. We had kept original leftover front door moulding and had scraps from patio door install so
worked on getting the right color of stain for the patio door and the front doors, using these scraps for his samples for me. I wanted the back door to match the kitchen cabinets (dark) but the front doors to match the original stain on the inside of the front doors (lighter golden
). So two different colors of stain to decide on.
was very patient with me and mixed a couple stains together to get the back door stain just right. Front door was easier as it was just one stain color. I was worried about the staining process as we have had one bad experience with a contractor who said they knew how to stain and didn't. BUT
AND HIS GUYS KNOW HOW TO STAIN! One very even coat of stain on each door then left doors cracked open for rest of day so they would dry real well and we could lock them at night. Third day was another early day because they needed to get the varnish on the doors so they would be dry by nighttime to lock. Fourth day - they sanded the varnished doors lightly and put another coat of varnish on them. DOORS LOOK GREAT - we have gotten many compliments on them! We are very happy with the way everything turned out.

Angie's Answers

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

I had them remodel both my bathrooms, they completely gutted the exsisting bathrooms from floors to ceiling and everything in between and gave me the two most beautul brand new bathrooms anyone can ask for. They are execllent! Extremely professional, customer service is wonderful, they are honest and lookout what you want and is best for you, not what will make them the most money! They are so clean and quiet that you don't even know they are in your home, They are absolute experts in everything with remodeling a bathroom! They make a remodel non-stressful and such a great expeience that when they were done, I was so happy with the outcome, but sad to see them go! I cannnot speak highly enough about them, I am their biggest fan. You cannot go wrong with them. I will always recommend them. I am very detailed oriented and pratical in cost, and shopped around, I decided to go with them because of their experince, expertise, price, suggestions, and how nice they were, and am happy I did! They exceeded my expectations with their products, service, expertise, experience, price, and end result, and I will not use anyone else!

Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
seems like a very knowledgeable guy but I guess I'll never know for sure. I took advantage of the $50 offer to have him come out and measure my kitchen and draw up a plan. I let him know that I was eager to get started and gave him my budget, which was not big. I have the feeling he's only interested in high budget projects.
He measured my kitchen and then I didn't hear from him. I called and left a message but didn't hear back. He was supposed to email a plan to me within a week.
I hired someone else to draw up a plan and emailed
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
that I'd like a refund if he wasn't going to send me a plan. He then promptly replied that he had misplaced my plan and had just found it and finally sent it to me a few days later, August 1st. By then I had already committed to another contractor.
I did get my new kitchen installed within budget by the way. It wasn't an unreasonable budget, just low.
From reading his other reviews it seems that once he gets the job and does the work, he's very good. From just meeting him that one time I believe it. I just couldn't wait around and I really needed to stay within my budget.

In my experience, contacting Lerry and his wife
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
(the office manager) from Applewood was a colossal waste of time. Here’s why:
I begin my due diligence of screening potential general contractors (GCs) for a standard tub to shower bathroom remodel. I contact several GCs and make appointments with a couple to meet them and to discuss the project. I liked
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
for their experience, technical skills, and responsiveness so I decided to consider them. They were family run and had time in their schedule. We clarified requirements and
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
offered ideas. Their prices were reasonable and they were making the short list.
Then progress hit a roadblock on the contract, however. The reason is because the Applewood team proved completely inflexible on their contract terms and conditions. They claimed that their contract was fixed and could not be altered. Really? I’ve dealt with more contracts and GCs than I care to admit over the decades with all of the
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
care renovations I’ve completed in multiple states and this simply not true.
A reasonable contract is designed to protect both parties, not one. More specifically, here is what they objected to and did not agree to add:
- my requirement that they and all their subs required insurance. Non-negotiable if you are smart and research it.
- estimated start date (within a couple months)
- clause that “time is of the essence” and that “work will proceed without substantial delays”… you want this clause so they
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
’t start the job and then not show up for days or weeks at a time. It is grey enough to be flexible and protect both parties.
- their text had reference that contractor is “authorized to do work in his opinion is necessary and plans may need to be altered of the contractor’s discretion.” Result:
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
check. I asked that we simply add “with consultation of owner” and they disagreed. Note that I was reasonable and did not seek a more balanced “consultation and approval of owner”.
- no cleanup clause, they could leave your place a mess and you have no recourse
- no GC pays subs reference. So they can take your money and the plumber and electrician won't get paid.
- no building permit reference
-did not want to add "good" before "workmanlike manner” in the context that "all work is to be performed in a good and workmanlike manner". This standard clause means if they do shoddy work you don't have as much recourse.
You get the idea…only concerned about protecting their interests and could not care less about the client's interests. I cannot speak to the quality of what work they do but if they hide behind a contract in this way, I would not consider them.
I’d advise you to not waste your time with Applewood. Shop around and identify GCs who have more knowledge, experience, and trust. Find one that is more balanced and reasonable. Find a GC you are comfortable with and establish a good rapport built on mutual trust and balanced, flexible terms. What do they have to hide? What are they afraid of? Walk if they say they are not open to changing their contract. The GC I went with never hesitated to add all these things to my contract and the result was worth waiting for.

No one wants to go to court but you won’t have much leverage if you sign their contract blindly. Your first source of leverage is the schedule of payments but after that is the contract. Suggest you not just focus on the price but pay special attention to the contract terms. You don't need a lawyer. Research this as much as you research whether you want radiant heat, tiles, epoxy grout, and plumbing fixtures. Take your time and select the right GC...Good luck!

First off - very disappointed in their non-responsiveness. We wanted to get an estimate on having 2 bathrooms remodeled. We were referred to them by a neighbor and was quite impressed with the workmanship and products they carried. We visited the showroom to get bathroom ideas and to talk to someone who could walk us through the process and to show us what was available. Unfortunately, the showroom in
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
County offered little selection and it was suggested that we visit the Hollywood store. We were interested in getting an estimate and was told that it would cost $150.00. We wanted to see what the estimate entailed - even though products had not been selected - how detailed was it going to be? We requested to see a copy of an estimate done for someone else just to get an idea of what was involved but was told nothing was available and could they email a copy. Later that day,
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
called and explained to my husband the level of detail in the estimate. After their discussion, I called
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
back and left a message saying we would like to schedule an appointment for him to come out. No response. 4 days later I called the showroom and spoke with
Manitowoc Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
to try and schedule a date. I was told they would get back to us. 2 weeks later nothing! It's unfortunate, because we are moving forward with these projects BUT it won't be with this company.
