"Rustic was quick to schedule and arrive for a design consultation following my initial contact through Angie's List, this was followed up very quickly with" a quote via Email, but after our deposit and date selection (June 17th) the communication and follow-through fell apart on their end. It is important to note I hired a company to build a fence around my yard due to my expertise on the matter being non-existent, I have hired a number of other contractors/service providers as we've been doing major work on our home (inside & out) since moving in April '14 for all projects whose scope was beyond my knowledge/capability. The reason I mention this is due to this company being the only one who required me (the customer) to obtain the permitting to perform the service requested. I realize as the homeowner this is my responsibility to obtain the permits (or hire companies who will in the course of their work); however, when hiring a service provider I would expect them to mention this up front, or at least list it on their quote/contract as it is commonly required based on my research and all other service providers/contractors plan and communicate permit acquisition according to the service/work they're going to perform. I only became aware I needed to obtain the permit due to my research of how much it would cost to obtain a permit to remove a tree on my property (at the direction of a tree removal service who offered to include it int their quote if I wanted them to obtain it for me), this
me to uncover I needed to obtain a fence building permit and I had to then proactively contact Rustic to ask whether or not I would be required to obtain it, or if they would obtain it for me, their response: "You, the customer needs to get a permit from the Village of Park Ridge." I have no problem obtaining permits, but a little guidance would have been
, had I not been removing a tree the builder would have shown up and not been able to perform their work due to a lack of a permit. June 17th arrived and it was lightly raining, the workers were to be there between 8a-9a but no one showed, so I left for work at 10a. I called Rustic to inquire as to why no one showed, and their response was "it's raining," which it seemed I was supposed to know meant no work could be done. Rustic offered to have the builder at my house the following day at 8a regardless of weather to at least discuss the job and get answers so they could start it once the rain stopped later in the week. The next day the builder showed up at 10a, 2 hours later than expected, with no call or apology. We discussed the schedule due to the week looking to have rain in the forecast, they stated they would begin work the following week. I was made aware by
there was a "large job for Glenview" scheduled for the following week so they might be able to squeeze my job in; I brought this up to the builder when he was at my house and he stated "not a problem, we're going to build next week, will only take a day." The following week no one showed up at all, no one called, I ended up calling them Thursday night holding out hope of a Friday build, but the gentleman on the phone stated "you are scheduled for Monday." Again, giving them the benefit of the doubt I didn't make a fuss, looking forward to at least having the fence up before the
4th weekend. The following week again no one showed, and no call until I reached out to them on Thursday morning wondering what was going on. I was told a number of excuses including the weather, the "large job in Glenview," and the holiday weekend. It had now been 2 weeks past the original build date, guaranteed I wouldn't have a fence for the 4th weekend, and no apology. I eventually spoke to who I assume was the Owner or Manager, who when I said I would like to cancel the work so please send my deposit back in full replied "You're making a big mistake." I had reached my limit at that point and replayed the events as they happened over the previous 2 weeks, to which I was met with silence and a "Oh, well... I'm sorry, we're going to do the work Monday" and yes another commitment to have my fence built the following Monday "guaranteed ." I chose not to cancel the work due to my not being able to get another builder to install next day (which I tried to find), and under the agreement that if Rustic wasn't there Monday morning I would expect my check back and the job canceled. Monday
6th arrives and the builder is there, the fence work began. I arrived home after work and found the work to be done well for the most part; however, we have one gate on an incline near the garage which scrapes the driveway incline so I needed to trim to be able to open it easily; they also cracked a large stone paver (brand new) near the gate and just leaned it up against a tree for us to find. I was not hopeful of any kind of communication or assistance with reimbursement for the paver due to the lack of communication and push-back with Rustic on their part to date, luckily my landscaper offered to replace it at no charge. All in all I would have been fine with the delays (to a degree) had this company chosen to communicate effectively that these delays were possible/occurring, instead of leaving me to manage the communication from my end. I will say though, they were on point calling me to send a check within a couple days of the job being completed, which is the only proactive communication I received since they engaged me to set-up a design consultation. I would not hire or recommend this company to any one, especially if they are like me who is someone looking for an expert in their field to help me navigate the requirements/timeline/delays/etc one may encounter during the execution of the work/service requested. I believe the majority of the issues with communication stem from a poor customer management system, I must have spoken to 4-5 different people including the builder, and none of which seemed to know what the others had communicated, or even that I was experiencing these issues. Note: While Reviewing Rustic on here I noticed a review from June 29th (work completed on June 22nd) where the reviewer mentions Rustic performed the work on 6/22 "in the rain," which leaves me perplexed as to how a job scheduled after my 1st build date was able to stay on schedule and be done in the rain. Schedule: May 18th - Quote May 19th - Quote Acceptance & Date Selection June 8th - Confirmation Permit was Customer Responsibility (Customer had to engage) June 17th - Original build date (missed, no show/no call) June 18th - Builder Meeting (Late arrival, commitment to build following week) June 24th - No Call/No Update (Previous Commitment by Builder confirmed false, New Date 6/30 provided) June 30th - 2nd Build Date (missed, no show/no call)
2nd - Customer Calls for Update (Poor Attitude by Rustic, new date of 7/6 provided)
6th - Fence Built (damage to landscaping/gate defect)
9th - Call for Payment (payment sent 7/20, cashed 7/24)

"Called ahead of time and wanted to come early but I was not able to meet them at property. I had no issue with this and provided what I wanted. They measured the" area and was prompt on getting me quote. My issue is, they were 105 feet more than what the next 2 companies measured. I measured area before anyone came & came up with what every other contractor measured. Two of three companies called to ask if they could come early because being in the area and wasn't able to attend measure but they were only company that measured 533 feet. Thou, two companies said the job would be a tough one because of ground, guessing that is why they wanted to sneak that extra 105 in there.

Tips for Dealing with Flaky Contractors

Dear Angie: I gave a fencing contractor a $1,300 deposit on a $2,600 job. Months after we signed a contract, no work has been done. What should I do?

Fences provide practical and aesthetic value, but a badly conceived fence can be an eyesore and a source of conflict with neighbors. With wooden privacy fences, vinyl fences and others, it can be difficult to pick the best fencing option for your home. Consider these tips before making this investment in your home.

I would say depends on several things:

1) what % of the job is $400 ?

2) how good is the warranty - against all types of failure, or what - cedar fences usually fail in one of two ways - tornado/hurricane/waves/flood/car collision takes them out, or the posts (if not treated timber) rot out. The fence itself will change color and get fuzzy as it weathers, but should last 15-20 years in most areas.

3) generally, a fence is not something you would pay for a warranty on - if properly put up and with concreted-in copper chromate or copper napthalate treated posts (the green preservative) should last a long time and not need warranty work basically till the fasteners fail or the fence slat boards split too badly.

4) if I was going to spend extra money on a wood fence, it would be for a good quality penetrating sealer, not steel posts.

's. Job was estimated at $4600 and deposit of $2300 was given. Completion was date was approximately three weeks. At the end of April, I began calling to determine when the work would start. The only thing that was done (at at end of April) was the removal of the fallen retaining wall from the water and stacking it on the paver patio that was to be re-done.

committed on three separate dates / occassions that he would be out to begin work. However, he would never show and never called to say he wasn't coming. Phone calls were not returned timely or not returned at all. On 5/20/15 (the third time he said he would begin work and failed to show up), I talked to him and told him I wanted to cancel contract and he agreed and after a heated discussion he hung up on me. I received a cancellation letter in early June (he never said that it would be sent) and I signed and returned with a letter disputing the amount he wanted to refund. I have not talked to

Fence problems. So our neighbor next door offered us a deal. She said that we would take down the fence and her son, with the help of her contractor's supervision, would tear down and put up a new fence to be completed by a set due date….WRONG.
So we were left with and open violation of privacy and a neighbor who did not care. After she slammed the door in our face when we went over to negotiate with her we were left having to find someone to put up the fence that my neighbor flaked on. After 6 or 7 contractor calls taken from Angie's List for fence contractors,

Of three bids,
White Salmon Fence Companies Provider Name Locked
was the only sales person who pointed out the need for added stability for the new six to eight foot fence we were going to install. We live on a hillside and the fence was to be installed on top of a 60 year old concrete retaining wall. He said we would need to drill 18 inches into the concrete wall to secure the posts for the new structure. When we experienced winds with the chain-link, of course, the wind went straight through the fencing. With over-lapped wood as high as 8 feet, there could be wind stress on the long structure that could potentially pull the posts out of the concrete secured with only a plate and four bolts.
When I asked other sales people if there could be a problem with wind etc.and such a high fence mounted on the concrete wall, they acted like they'd never thought of such a thing.

first removed and disposed of the old fence. They spent the next full day drilling out the concrete holes and sinking and securing the posts. The second day was spent installing the actual fence. The workmen were polite and efficient. The fence looks great and has withstood almost a year of all the weather

Of course, the bid was more than the others we received because of all the additional work done. Our philosophy on this project was, "you get what you pay for".

Overall my experience with
White Salmon Fence Companies Provider Name Locked
was very positive. They are obviously very busy but was able to come over to review the work and provide me a quote fairly quickly. They also emailed me all the paperwork I needed and the steps in order to get the work performed. They called
White Salmon Fence Companies Provider Name Locked
to make sure everything was marked the day they intended to work. Although we had to change the original appointment due to an odd
White Salmon Fence Companies Provider Name Locked
holiday schedule for the 4th of
White Salmon Fence Companies Provider Name Locked
, the re-schedule went fine and they came out and did a great job on all of the repairs. One section of the fence in fact had to be completely replaced and they did a great job of matching the new section to the original fence design. They finished the work promptly and I am very satisfied with the work they did, and I would definitely hire them again to perform future repairs.

The original job went well, but I guess he was hungry at that time. However, if you need any follow up work done, don't bother calling them. One of my down spouts and smaller gutters got bent due to the winter storms this past February, and I needed him to come out to determine if it needed repairing or replacing, but he (
White Salmon Fence Companies Provider Name Locked
) made some excuse that he never gets out to my neighborhood, and it's not worth his gas. However, I knew ahead of time he was coming out here to address a situation with one of my neighbors, so he basically lied. Also, I asked if I could pay him to come out and remove the gutters so I could have my fascias painted, and then I would have him come back out after the painters were finished to reattach them, but he said that it's too much trouble to do that, and he wasn't interested in the job. The sad part is, we have referred customers to him, and when my husband was contracting, he used his company on several jobs.
- Keith N.

Work was done in a workmanlike manner, but not per stated schedule.
Workmen damaged existing sprinkler system while installing fence post. Management claimed it was not responsible for damage, and even if it was, it was not liable to pay for repair per their contract (I was told it was in the "fine print" of the contract.).
They have not been out to look at the damage after two promises to investigate.
So, did they do the work? YES.
Did they damage the existing sprinkler line? YES
Did they make any effort to even look at the damage? NO
Did they refuse to correct or repair the damaged sprinkler line? NO
Would I ever use them again or recommend their services? NO WAY!
How could a company knowingly cause damage while doing their work and claim to not be responsible for correcting the damage.
