In trying to extend our island counter top, it took weeks to come up with a design. First it was to add legs, then it was to add

The contractor used for the tiling/backsplash was wonderful and did great work. Not only did we do the backsplash, but also added the stonework around our entire island. It looks great. We did end up with a small crack in the granite near the sink, but it does look so much better. The price was over budget in the end, more here for labor, more there. In the end, I love my kitchen. However, we started the process in January and didn't finish the planning until the end of march and start work until April - when I threatened to cancel if they didn't book the work.

Personal opinion but I will not buy another front load washing machine again.  They simply do not clean clothes as well as the old agitator style washers do.  In the summer when I am hot and sweaty I have to wash shirts at least twice, sometimes up to four times to get the stink out.  Also, while they may save water per load washed, they run a lot longer.  My old washing machine took about 20 minutes to wash a load of clothes.  The front loader takes about an hour.  What it saves on water it more than makes up for in electricity I'm sure running three times as long.  Our front loader has not leaked but it doesn't do the job for my clothes.  Maybe someone sitting in an office all day has fewer problems having to rewash clothes.


As for appliance brand recommendations I have no particular favorites.  They all seem to be disposable these days, often costing as much to repair as to replace.  Samsung has made some good appliances as of late I've heard a lot of good reviews about from customers.  I've got a customer who bought a Kenmore refrigerator when they built the house.  The ice maker has gone out and the replacement part isn't any better since it's a known defect according to the appliance repairman they had look at it.  It was just past the warranty so they didn't pay for another part to be installed that was going to fail again.  Since Kenmore is made by other companies I'm sure they aren't the only one with this problem.  We live in a disposable society.  I look at how well it works, the warranty and cost and weigh the last two of those after kicking out the ones with bad reviews on that model.

Depends a lot on your current configuration. Rough numbers, $4-7,000 for the generator including autostart and automatic load transfer circuit box and master breakers (usually all come on the generator).

Installation (with pad already inplace and gas hookup - about $500-1000.

Electrical about $800 minimum, to maybe $2500. The $800 will get you a simple transfer switch installation but if you want some household circuits to run on the generator but others not, depending on how your current wiring is run, can run to $2000 to pull existing circuits to a new panel.

The problem is that all circuits that are going to be on the generator, unless you are planning to carry the entire household load, have to go to a separate circuit breaker panel which is fed off the automatic transfer switch, so they get power from either the power company or the generator, depending on which is providing power at the moment. That means the circuits running off either source have to be disconnected from your current breaker box, extended (commonly) over to the new box, and hooked up. All other circuits stay on your current breaker box, to run only off the public power when it is on. If the generator is large enough capactiy for your entire house load of course it costs more, but this circuit termination point moving is not needed, so electrical work drops way off to basically a connection box with the transfer switch.

A couple of words of advice - pay attention to weather protection, fire barrier between the unit and the house (including issues of overhead decks that can catch fire), automatic fire shutoff/suppression, and trickle charging from house power to generator battery. Also read CAREFULLY your power comopany rules on generator installation (commonly requires their signoff), any code restrictions on generators and noise in your area, and if your insurance rate will go up. (It definitely does if you have a fuel tank, I don't know if it does with natural gas-fired generators.)

pointed out that the Maytag models, which were on sale, represent the "best value" of the models under consideration. The appliances were delivered and installed a couple days later. Upon testing the appliances, the delivery crew and my wife noted a loud banging noise coming from the dryer. This happened with every revolution of the dryer tub. The delivery crew put her in touch with the store, and the person at the store said this was normal and would disappear after use. She found this incredible, but followed his instructions to run a timed cycle for 30 minutes. This was tried, but the knocking did not stop. We also shot a video to capture the sound.

, he immediately took action and arranged for the delivery of a new dryer. We took delivery of a new, second dryer a couple of days later. The second dryer was improved but still did not function properly.The second dryer did not constantly make the knocking noise, but the noise would appear a minute or two into the cycle. We agreed to have a repair person take a look at the second dryer. The repairman concluded the drum was contacting the outer wall of the dryer, and perhaps the drum was warped. He said the drum should not be touching the wall of the dryer at all. To test this, he ordered a new drum and installed it on Feb 2nd.
The installation of the new drum seems to have solved the problem. and we hope the good performance continues. However, we have never purchased any major item, such as an appliance, automobile, lawn mower, etc, that did not work properly, or that required repair, straight "out of the box" - and this happened twice for this purchase (although the first dryer was just replaced instead of repaired). While the washer and dryer are both well rated models, having two separate dryers that required repair or replacement straight out of the box, leaves us feeling a bit uneasy about this major purchase ($2,000+). Given all this time and trouble, along with our willingness to accept these appliances, we asked Grand for some assurance that our appliances will be covered in the event of continued need for repair.

responded a few days later, and offered a 3 year extended warranty, on both the washer and dryer, at no extra cost to us. We thought this was fair and a definite positive for

. We realize this was a tough situation for them also, and they would much rather deliver appliances that worked right out of the box, as expected. Our experience with our sales person at Grand was very positive. We did not feel pressured at all when shopping. He came over and asked if he could be of assistance. He answered our questions thoroughly, and we found him easily when more questions arose. We left to have lunch, then decided to return and make the purchase from Grand. The purchase was very straight forward and we were soon on our way.
Despite the problems encountered with the new dryer, we will return to Grand the next time we shop for an appliance.
