and Danise from
(RCN) did a fantastic job remodeling our downstairs bathroom. Danise helped me bring out my vague" ideas for a tile wainscoting into a finished design, which
expertly installed. All of the subcontractors involved are chosen with RCN's high standards in mind. I still smile every time I walk into my new bathroom.

"This will be an in-progress report with more details to be added later. I found Designer Homes online at Angie's list. I carefully read over 40 reviews of" this company there and all but a couple seemed to be very happy with the work done. I read the negative reviews very carefully and felt that the issues that caused the poor scores could have been the result of misunderstanding or lack of knowledge by the homeowner about the process. The work crew has been working at our home for just about one week (5 working days) and in my opinion, the quality of the work has been very good. I grew up with a contractor/house builder father so I am familiar with the basics of construction processes, even though I am not an expert by any means, and am certainly not up-to-date with all the new products now available that can be used in the construction process. The details - after the recent rains we noticed that the top
of bricks of the large decorative brickwork structure at one corner of our home was sinking to the point that the sag in the middle of the bricks across the top was 2+ inches lower at the center of the "span" than at the ends. We hired a local masonry company listed with Angie's list to do a minor demo and repair of just the sinking bricks, only to find VERY extensive damage to the wood in the corner support column of the house wall behind the brickwork as soon as the top
of bricks was removed. It was soon very clear that all the brickwork needed to come down in order to access and replace framing structure under both corner windows. Since it was likely that other areas of the exterior wall (wood - latex-stained plywood and
and groove siding surfaces) were probably also damaged, we decided to call for bids from several local contractors and strip the siding from one whole (2-
) side of the house.. After the bids came in, Ed with Designer Homes was the clear frontrunner since Ed was able to discuss the projected work with us in a very knowledgeable fashion. That might not be important to someone else, but since I grew up hearing construction terms and seeing projects being completed all around me, it gave me confidence that Ed and his crew would do a quality job. I have not been disappointed. The guys are here by 9 a.m. every morning with the supplies and tools they will need for the day's work. Ed or his project supervisor checks in almost daily to make sure everything is on schedule. Since we are both retired, we are here and are able to watch the daily progress of the work. The tear-out took just a bit over one day, then they immediately started rebuilding the corner that was the most damaged area on the house. The work has continued to the point where all the structure is now solid, our recycled fairly new vinyl windows are back in their spaces and sealed - with new trim (painted just today) and the preparation of the wall for siding and new plaster is complete. The woodwork is level (I checked with my Dad's old level) and square and the window installation is almost complete inside. The drywall is coming along - it needed some extensive patches due to the corner column being removed and replaced without removing the interior drywall, but that is coming along well and I am sure that the quality of the finished product will be as good as what I see on the exteriors. The crew cleans up the exterior and interior work areas every day before leaving the jobsite. It is a messy and sometimes dusty project, but they do their best to keep their work areas clean and safe and protect carpet and furniture with plastic sheeting. We also have several indoor cats and the members of the crew have been careful to keep doors closed. If the rest of this project goes as well as the first part, we will certainly be calling Designer Homes for the next project on our remodel wish list. More later!

Angie's Answers

This part of Don's answer follows my thoughts exactly:

"You want to deal with a professional person that is selling you a bath that was not working as a cashier a few months ago."

Do you go to the gracery store and ask for someone to cook your steak?  Of course not.  So why would you go to a building supply store and ask for someone to remodel your bathroom?  Rarely will you see a legitimate contractor take jobs from a retailer.  Why?  Because they don't pay much.  Speed is the most important thing to them, along with getting it done cheap so they can maximize profit.  About 10 years ago I worked on a few contracted structures (sheds, garages, etc.) from Home Depot.  They contracted to another company who then contracted people to build them.  At that time they paid a flat $250 for a contractor to pick up the supplies, build the structure on site, paint it, and use their own tools.  By the time the cost of a helper, fuel, tools, etc. was factored in there was nothing left for the contractor.  Anyway, the point I'm making is that the guy who will eventually show up to do the work will be so far down the line that everyone else has already taken the profits (Home Depot, ReBath, possibly someone else, and finally the guy working) that he probably isn't going to care what kind of job he does for you, quality or not.  He likely won't have much experience due to a high turnover rate and any experience he does have will probably be limited to his teachings at that job.  He probably can't answer any building code questions or identify other hazards once things are taken apart and he certainly won't do anything he doesn't have to while it is apart.

Another problem I've heard of repeatedly is that if (when) there is a problem there is always someone else you need to speak to.  You might have to talk to 4 or 5 different people before you can even get to someone that can address the problem.  Now multiply that due to having (at least) two separate companies involoved.  "You need to call ReBath."  "No, you need to call Home Depot."

You hire a general contractor for a reason.  We learn, understand, and keep up on building codes.  We are the one point of contact for all questions and issues on a project.  There is no manager in some other store, state, etc. to call.  You contract a GC and deal directly with that GC, or a site supervisor in some cases.  There isn't a huge chain of command to get through to reach the main decision maker for the business.  In a bathroom remodel you need someone who can do the plumbing, repair and/or move any electrical, install tile/flooring, drywall and paint, trim carpentry, and someone to coordinate all of that.  Sometimes you can find a qualified contractor to do all of those things and sometimes he will sub-contract out certain components (especially due to licensing laws) but you will always have that one definitive person to go to for any questions or issues.  A salesman in a store doesn't visit your home throughout the project to check on the status.  Even if he did, he likely wouldn't now what he is looking at.  The same goes for a retail manager.

Hire someone who specializes in taking care of your home.  Hire based on reputation & knowledge/experience.  You are right that not every customer can be happy so an occassional bad review can be found on just about any business.  Read the reviews, not the grades (they are always biased).  Look to see if the contractor attempted to rectify the problem, not ignore it.  Lastly, unless you want cheap, sloppy work and a whole heap of other troubles, don't hire based on a low price.

Hair spray is one of those things that is really bothersome.  We've run into this alot unfortunately.  And NOTHING we've found will actually clean it off.  The problem is that if you just paint over it, you still see shiny spots wherever the hairspray was.

Our companie's policy is to prime the area with any bonding primer.  This will seal the hairspray in and not let it affect the next coat of paint.  It would also be a good idea to lightly sand the area first.

Our recommendation for primer would be Zinsser's BIN Spray (red can) and can be bought at most paint stores or home improvement stores.  Other than that, any thing that specifically says "bonding" for a primer should be adequate enough.
What I always ask my customers regarding this question when remodeling bathrooms is how good they will be about maintaining and cleaning the new bathroom, especially when the old bathroom is obviously neglected.  If you are one of those people who wipes the glass down after a shower and cleans your bathroom every week or two you really don't need to spend the extra money.  If you are at the other end of the spectrum and clean it when it finally bothers you enough it may not be a bad investment.  I've had customer tell me they can tell a difference compared to their old glass without it and others say it made no difference at all.

Your basic rights and protections under law are probably outlined by your state and city's laws. In most states, the easiest way to look up your basic rights and privelges as a consumer would be to visit your state's attorney general website - you can usually find lots of great tips to protect yourself as a consumer there, too. Here's the National Association of Attorneys General's national listing, which includes a link to each state's attorney general website: http://www.naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php

Beyond those basic rights under the law, your expectations of a contractor during, on and after the completion of a job should be explicitly outlined in the estimate and contract. Although it can be a pain in the butt, ALWAYS read the estimate and/or contract before sign it! I cannot stress this enough - frequently the cause of someone's negative experiences with a contractor can be traced back to too few details in the contract.

We've covered contracts, and what you should expect to see in them, here: http://www.angieslist.com/contractor/signing-a-contract.htm

Good luck!

Everything went amazing. Due to the age of the house it is far from square and for sure not level. So it wasn't as easy as just tearing out the sheetrock and putting up the paneling. He made sure everything was perfect. I can't find a flaw in it. I am very critical of the work done by contractors / handymen normally because they cut corners and surprise you in the end with a bill double than expected. The work done by

was amazing. I wouldn't say he took his time because that makes it sound like he took a long time to finish the project, but he took the time to make it perfect. When he was finished the bill is exactly what I thought it would be. He was also very friendly and professional. I would highly recommend

The end result was nothing less than stunning. We could not have dreamed of a better overall result with minimal disruption to our home. The best part, we were able to enjoy a great experience and have a great end result with design that we absolutely love. Really good.
Kennewick Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
is exceptionally thorough and good at what he does. The craftsmanship is excellent and his prices are good. He's not afraid to tell you when something you've asked for isn't the best approach and in the end the outcome was always better following his advice. We're having him back in the spring to do our roof and even more work. Can't recommend his work highly enough.

We recently hired Avi and his team to renovate our condo. We had interviewed a few contractors and chose Avi because of his transparency from the beginning. Out of all the contractors we interviewed, he was the only one that gave us a straight answer about the potential challenges around some of the work we wanted done. All the others were eager to please and told us what we wanted to hear, not the truth (which was that some of the work we wanted done was not possible).
Working with Avi was easy and comfortable. We never felt like he was trying to take advantage of us. After hearing horror stories about people hating their contractors, it felt great to have found someone who was kind and truly cared about the quality of his work. Avi was always available to us personally, and came to check on the property regularly. Working with him, I felt valued as a customer.
The job did take longer than we expected, but that's the norm for renovation projects. And of course, no remodeling goes 100% as planned- small errors and miscommunications happen- but Avi went out of his way to make sure everything was completed to our satisfaction.
Avi is not the cheapest guy in town, but you're paying for his care, attention, and quality of work. I would happily work with him again and would recommend him wholeheartedly.

We're still in the middle of construction, but all is going very well. Workers arrive first thing in the am and work hard all day long. Visible progress hourly almost! The foreman and the Contractor Nir ,check on the progress regularly. So far we are very pleased and happy we found such a great contractor. Would highly recommend "

I Spoke to
Kennewick Kitchen And Bath Remodelers Provider Name Locked
about the fact that a shower door was leaking in a rental unit of mine and possibly was hung improperly. He said as long as the shower door was intact, reinstalling should do the trick but the design of these types of doors was defective.. I told him I have another identical one in an adjoining rental and a piece on the track is missing. I said we might have to replace the door on that one, and maybe both would be eventually replaced, I wasn't sure. I said maybe the doors they make now are better designed. We agreed he would come out and rehang the first one and look at the second. I agreed to what he wanted to charge me to do that and let him choose when. I went and got print outs of replacement shower doors for the second one. The day of the appointment he started texting me before 7am. He wanted to know if I got the replacement shower door and or parts to fix them. I answered, that wasn't what we had said we were doing. He then said maybe I should reschedule until I had the shower door and or parts. I replied, I am not qualified to do that, that's why I called you. I asked that he call me because we were misunderstanding each other. He called sometime later and I missed the call. I immediately tried calling back and texting for over 2 hours. I drove the 30 minutes to the appointment and waited one and a half hours, (he wanted a window for his arrival). He didn't show up, call, or text. When he did finally TEXT me, after I texted him that I was going to leave a review of his behavior, he was rude and said I was just going to waste his time. He said it wasn't worth his time if I didn't have everything to fix both doors. I am just dumbfounded, I even have texts confirming appointment for rehanging the door, he talked me into rehanging the door, I started the call to him with "I need a licensed contractor to replace a shower door that I think was improperly installed because it doesn't seem to fit the space"
