was a pleasure to deal with. He evaluated some jewelry I brought in and selected the jewelry of value to buy for its gold/silver content. He was very honest and a pleasure to deal with.

My fiance purchased an engagement ring from
for $12,890 in August 2012. SINCE HE WAS REFERRED BY A FRIEND, WE NEVER DOUBTED HIS INTEGRITY. The ring was given to me in Oct. of 2012. Unfortunately by August of 2013 my fiance and I had separated. While we remain friends, it did not make sense to keep the ring.
's Appraisal Report for our Insurance company listed the replacement value at $14,500 so I gave him the ring to sell on consignment. After approx. 8 months the ring had not sold so I asked for it back so I could try selling it elsewhere.
and I met so he could return the ring to me. When I gave him the ring to sell, it was in a very classy wooden box with a yellow satin bag around it and a laminated card describing the ring. When it was returned, it had none of those things. I asked for my original box back and was told it was not available. Eventually he ordered another from his supplier and returned the ring.
Not long after I sent the ring to a company in NY for an appraisal by their gemologist. I received an email telling me the weight was accurate at 1.52 ct, however they would grade it as Color I, Clarity I1. They mentioned it was an EGL Int'l stone (the least accurate, least credible grading agency, and one they rarely dealt with because of that) so it would likely be off a couple of grades from
. My ring however was rated by EGL Int'l as Color G, Clarity SI1. The HUGE difference in grading cut the value to less than half. I went to 2 other dealers and was given similar info. The last dealer checked the industry std database for the wholesale price of an EGL Int'l stone using EGL Int'l grading. The cost was listed as $4462-$5834. The absolute MOST WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN CHARGED for the stone was $7500. The price we were charged for the stone was $10,400. And this was supposedly being sold to us as a FRIEND!
I will not include the dealer's comments when I told them what we paid. I approached
and offered him the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps there was a mistake. Perhaps given his
training he accidentally priced it as a
stone. After checking his records
responded it was priced correctly. I asked him if he would tell me his cost and was told no. Given the discrepancy I sent emails & 2 certified letters asking to return the ring. NO RESPONSE! NOT A WORD! Even when I reminded him that both his Facebook and Linked-In profiles said his motto was 100% customer satisfaction, still no response.
Since then I filed a complaint with the BBB detailing our experience, however according to them, because my name was not on the receipt, my fiance would have to file. They would have to close my case and could not pursue it any further until that happened. On as positive note - my fiance is in the process of doing that. I don't want to leave out one important detail though: when
answered their complaint (after being notified twice), he never denied what I had said about his misleading us or about overcharging us. All he said was I was not the purchaser of the ring...and after two years, he could not refund it. (Ironic because he was in possession of the ring for a good part of those 2 years).
One last thing I'd like to say. I recently came across an article in the diamond industry trade press that said that the dealer is ultimately responsible for accurately representing the value of their stone to their customer.
is a "private jeweler" who's been doing this for 30+ years. I would have assumed this would have applied to him as well.
I am hoping that providing my Angies List' friends with the details of our experience will help other couples avoid all the disappointment and heartache we went through.

I was interested in purchasing a heart shaped ruby/diamond pendant. I found a picture online that was a good starting point and brought it to

emailed pictures (e.g., waxes) so we could discuss and I could approve. When I visited the store, there were often returning customers (e.g., young couples with families) who had made earlier purchases (e.g.,engagement rings/wedding bands). With each iteration,

Dealing with this establishment was the most humiliating retail experience I've encountered the past 30 years of purchasing or consigning jewelry. I consigned my ring to them and was never told of their policy of not giving you your portion of the sale unless the original paperwork could be shown. I originally consigned my ring almost a year ago. When I asked if they had a copy of my consignment receipt because I no longer had it, they told me they have no records of merchandise and I would be unable to receive any compensation. I asked if I could show ID to proving that I was in fact the same person who entered into the agreement and the owner stated that it's against their policy. There was nothing on the receipt stating that you couldn't be paid without it, and they said they told me this almost a year ago which they did not. The owner finally gave me what we agreed upon from the sale of the jewelry, however he embarrassed me in front of other customers and my children were so uncomfortable in the store, I had to ask them to wait out front. He spoke disrespectfully and asked me if I had ever consigned jewelry before. He also stated i was rude and that because of this, he had been considering giving me the money I was owed and that he decided he did not wish to do so. I was visibly shaken from this experience and would never do business there again. The owner also yanked the driver's license out of my hand when I tried to hand it to him. I'll never consign any goods whatsoever because of the treatment I received as a costumer of this business. I witnessed the owner treating paying consumers much better than he treated myself, a consignment customer.

I worked with
Salem Designer Jewelry Provider Name Locked
, the owner, and he was extremely gracious and listened to the type of design I wanted for my ring. After the initial visit, he called me a week later, to take a look at the preliminary design and get final approval.
I was extremely happy with the final product and loved what he did. The price was very fair and I definitely will return. I noticed while I was in his shop, customers who came in and expressed their satisfaction with his work.
I also like the fact that I am supporting a family company, with a great reputation.

Salem Designer Jewelry Provider Name Locked
consistently excelled all the times I've used them for a variety of things. Their customer service is top notch, and every staff member with whom I've dealt has been knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. I bought a gemstone pendant and a diamond ring at different times, and was very pleased with the selection and pricing (both purchases were during sales events). Sands restrung a jade-bead necklace that had broken. The staff person who waited on me was extremely thorough in finding the right color of cord for the restringing. The repair was done in just a few days, and the necklace is as good as new. I also had Sands appraise ten rings for our home owner's insurance. The appraisal was done in a highly detailed and professional manner and included excellent color photographs. Sands gave me a complete copy of the appraisal and sent both an electronic file and a hard copy to our insurance agent. I have found Sands to be an excellent jewelery store and a true quality business.

It was a wonderful experience. I had been to other jewelry stores that were not really interested in repair the costume jewlery along with the fine jewelry. I was pleasantly suprised that was not the case at
Salem Designer Jewelry Provider Name Locked
. They made me feel extremely comfortable and accommodated a variety of repair needs to both fine and costume jewelry. They also helped me make informed decisions about which repairs may not be worthwhile. I never felt rushed or pressured. They took as much time as necessary to address my needs.
I live in Chicago and it was well worth the drive to
Salem Designer Jewelry Provider Name Locked
Hills. I am so very pleased that I can now where the jewerly (worth over $4,000) that had been lying around used for years because of repair needs. The repair cost was an excellent investment. I highly recommend their services.

The experience at
Salem Designer Jewelry Provider Name Locked
was wonderful. It was an honest estimate and a timely fix. He did exactly what he said he was going to do and at the amount that he stated. This store fixed a problem that was created by one of the "big" jewelery companies and it looked better after he finished than it ever looked from them. The communication was there and I always new the status of my repair. I would definitely use this store again for repairs and new purchases. i would recommend them to anyone.

spent a lot of time sorting through the many items that I brought for sale. He took the time explain value and gave a fair price for the items he chose to buy. He is very knowledgeable and I would recommend him to others.

I bought a very pretty small gold and silver ring from
Salem Designer Jewelry Provider Name Locked
and Country a little while ago and although I did find it a little pricey the service was great. I have gotten complimentary cleanings and polish on multiple pieces of jewelry, we have taken several items there for guidance on repair and replacement as well as estimates. The personal and approachable jeweler feel is hard to find in many places and the owners knowledge is not easily matched.
