"Outstanding service from Mr.
and his son to unclog my mother's bathroom drains. Both toilets were clogged, and the bathtub drain was" very sluggish. They came out on very short notice at 6:30 pm. They were both very personable, friendly, and took the time to explain what was going on with our drains. I highly recommend them. We were very satisfied and will be using them again.

"I was assigned this contractor through American home shield. The contractor called to set up an appointment for the repair the next day. He didn't ask me what" the repair was, so before he hung up, I asked him if he wanted to know that was wrong. I told him that the cold water valve that connects to my clothes washer needed to be replaced, and asked if the repairman would have the part in his vehicle. He said that part would be in his truck. He told me the repairman would be there between 10-1. Before 10 am,
arrived at my home and asked me twice if I was the home owner. I said yes , and before he looked at my water hook up, told me that somethings aren't covered and he'd need to call and check. After a quick phone call he confirmed with me what he already knew. The repair was not covered. The agent from American Home shield said he'd complete the repair for $150 plus the $75 service call. The accurate name for the part that needed to be replaced was a hose bib, but I'm positive that the person I spoke to on the phone knew what I was talking about.
said that many times they "don't know what's covered with the home warranty, and if they do they will sometimes tell the customer before they come out" I'm think they knew before arriving that the repair wasn't covered which makes them dishonest. Secondly they planned to overcharge me for the repair. Many times as frustrating is it is with the home warranty, if something is not covered the contractor with include the service fee as part of the repair costs. Charging over $200 to change out a $5-12 hose bib is price gouging. I paid the $75, and asked
to leave. I will not do business with this company either through my home warranty or personally.

4 common plumbing scams and how to avoid them

Some plumbers are in the business just to make a quick buck. Here are four of the most common plumbing scams to watch out for and how to avoid them.

Hiring a Plumber

When you need a plumber, especially for an expensive project for which you have time to plan, make sure you hire one who is fully qualified and licensed in your state. A plumber may be an apprentice, a journeyman or a highly qualified master plumber, depending on the level of training and experience.

Fireplaces, Chimney Sweep, Plumbing

Dear Angie: How much can I expect to pay to have my wood fireplace converted to gas? Our house is about 30 years old. The bottom of the fireplace looks like it's easily accessed through the basement. The conversion would involve running 30 to 50 feet of gas line. — Thomas M., Cincinnati, Ohio

So you're in the bathroom minding your own business when you notice, ahem, seepage around the base of the toilet. It's not human error, but an issue with the john. The good news: It could be a relatively simple, inexpensive fix.

From the sounds of it, you have a clog between the floor drain and the connection to the city sewer (unless you have a septic tank).  The lower flow rates of sinks / showers / dishwashers probable don't cause a backup like the washing machine does.  A couple of suggestions.

1.  Snake the drain line with a spade tip snake, twisting the snake as you advance it.  This should clear the partial blockage.

 2.  If feasable, have your washing machine discharge into a utility sink and put a strainer on the drain to catch the clothing fibre (fibres and grease from the sink probably made the clog in the first place not to mention a garbage disposal).

3.  Replace your floor drain with one that has a backflow preventer (looks like there is a ping pong ball in it).

 Good Luck

?
It is not uncommon for a plumber to have to go get the parts necessary to repair and complete the job.  It is very hard to determine what the problem is over the phone and it is not until the repair process begins that the parts needed to resolve the problem is discovered.  It may also depend on if the plumber is using hourly rates or per job rates.  I would hope the time to get the parts would be minimal and the charge would be as well!
?
FYI: CPVC and PEX are two different materials and installed differently.  PEX is not intended to be glued but instead has special crimp fittings.  PEX is a brand name of one product that is manufactured slightly differently by others as well so it is important that the same brand fittings are used to match the pipe material.

Mobile homes used CPVC for years and some still do.  It works fine but is not as strong as a properly soldered copper pipe system.  Is the contractor installing this new plumbing a licensed plumber?  I'd be surprised if he is since he's using CPVC and not PEX (or similar) or copper.  PEX pipe is even cheaper than CPVC when run by a knowledgable plumber.  It doesn't require nearly as many joints since it comes in rolls and can flex through spaces easily.

There are some groups raising a fuss about BPA and other chemicals found in plastics that don't like the use of CPVC, PVC, or PEX pipe.  I haven't seen the results of any lab tests to confirm or dispute their concerns.  As far as durability goes it's fairly safe as long as it's properly installed and secured.  It is not as susceptible to hard water damage as copper.  It absolutely must be insulated along it's entire length to protect it from contact to other materials as well as freezing.  Also, the fixtures in the house need to be grounded electrically since the pipe itself provides no electrical protection against accidental shock or electrocution.  In a copper plumbed house the system is grounded so static electricity, a short in a wire near a water line, or lightning strike will carry the current out through the pipe instead of through the water to you, ideally.

If it's installed correctly you should be fine but make sure the contractor knows what he is doing and follows the proper procedures to use CPVC pipe.

It is usually cheaper to remove part of the ceiling below and patch it after the leak has been repaired.  Remember that water can travel before settling in one area, causing the spot you've seen.  Just because it is below the toilet does not mean that the toilet is the problem.  The cheapest option is to pull the toilet and check the floor around the wax ring to see if it has been leaking.  A new wax ring only costs a few dollars.  When was the last time you caulked the shower in that bathroom?  The water can leak around the corners or at the door (if you have one) and travel along the floor joists until it pools in a lower spot on the ceiling below, then seep through.  It could also be a seal at the drain of the tub or shower.

I get a few calls a year for this sort of thing.  It's usually something simple but can be a nightmare to diagnose, especially if the problem is intermittent.  Start with the simple possibilities and use deductive reasoning to narrow the possibilities.  Before you do a lot of damage it may pay off to hire a reputable contractor to help you make sure you've exhausted all of the imple and more obvious possibilities.

In order to gain access to the area of the cracked pipe which was located in the laundry room, they had to remove the dryer and all the connections including the gas line. They capped the gas so as to be safe and removed the door to the laundry room to be able to remove the dryer from the room completely. Based on their recommendation, they left the dryer outside the room so we can bring in a contractor to determine the level of damage. The cracked water pipe was fixed very quickly. We were able to turn the water main on in less than two hours of Pro Mech arriving. Although the water main was turned off very quickly after we identified the water leak, there was still minimal damage. The contractor (who was recommended by Pro Mech) stopped by in two days time and was able to inform us of what was involved to determine the damage. Pro Mech did recommend to purchase a dehumidifier to try to remove some of the water, but it did little good due to the amount that was later identified. Still, we are using the dehumidifier in our basement to remove excess moisture there.

and

were also very professional as they were careful not to dirty the floors as they were coming in and out of the house. They removed their shoes and put paper down so as to not cause dirt and excess snow from outside to enter the house. Overall, I was very pleased with the work that was done, especially since it was in the middle of a snowstorm over the weekend and late at night!

I called
Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
on a Saturday when our heat was not working. He told me he was on his way to a job and had another after that but he should be available in approximately 2 hours. He said he would call when he was on his way. Just as he said, 2 hours later he called and said he was on is way. He showed up diagnosed the problem, checked for frozen pipes, replaced the circulator pump, flushed the boiler and left everything neat and clean. I think his fee was very reasonable, especially for an emergency job. We would definitely use him again.

Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
is amazing at problem solving and is especially adept at doing so in old old housing where nothing was done the way it would be in new plumbing. We called him to say the sewer rooter guy found breaks in the pipes and that we couldn't use any drains until it got fixed because the sewer water would back up. We gave him a copy of the camera pictures/DVD that the sewer guy had taken.
Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
figured out where the breaks were (not so easy if you think about it!), did the repair with no damage to the basement bathroom (which saved us lots of money as going through the bathroom floor would have also meant ripping out a shower) and figured out why the problem had happened. He also was able to diagram the drain sewer pipers which are a

Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
comes quickly, fixes stuff, and reasonably priced. He is smart, funny and personable.

We had a very difficult time getting a plumber to be responsive initially and had called two other high profile companies before giving up and trying
Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
. We will never go anywhere else for plumbing needs! This family-owned and run company is so responsive, very caring and extremely professional!
1. The faucet would have (apparently!) been more expensive to order a new part and have installed. I appreciated
Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
's candor and recommendation that we buy a new faucet entirely and have it installed. He gave three recommendations for company names, what to look for and we went to the plumbing supply store completely educated and with a strong sense of what we needed/wanted. The installation was wonderful - they cleaned up the sink and made absolutely sure we were up and running. Very impressed!
2. The hot water heater was an expense and disaster we had not anticipated. It happened after hours and
Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
called us right away, told us what to turn off and checked back in to make sure we were feeling confident and not worried. First thing in the morning, the office arranged for someone to come right out with a new heater - they gave us all the information on what they had in stock and allowed me time to do my own research (and let me buy my own, if I had decided to).
Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
came out and was just the best! He helped us make the right decision on which tank we wanted, took away the old one - and left the basement spotless!
Such a great company - I highly recommend them and have to say that there is something to sticking with a good, locally owned, family run business. They are more considerate, thoughtful, professional and wonderful to work with! THANK YOU!

This was such a bad experience, I had to add it to the list for future clients to avoid. Our main incoming water line clogged/broke. We had almost no water coming, just a trickle from the basement sink. We called The Scottish Plumber, but they referred us to
Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
because they didn't have the license for the outdoor replacement. We were told to expect a call from
Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
. We waited a day, no call. Called back the Scottish Plumber who had referred us. He told us he would have
Roanoke Plumbers Provider Name Locked
call. Finally got a call from him. I asked if he could come as soon as possible to look at the problem because we had no way of washing, cooking, cleaning, etc. We were filling up buckets of water and melting snow to flush our toilets! He came and said we would have to replace the pipe from the city box at the parkway to our house. He told us it would be a day or two to get the permit from the city to dig, and a day or two to do the work. We were relieved because we thought we'd be back up and running in two to four days. Nope. It was three weeks! We kept waiting for news on the permit, and got nothing. He would say that we would have it for sure tomorrow, and then we wouldn't get a call. It was at least a week or so before they started digging. He would say that he would be there at 9 in the morning, and then show up at noon, or not at all that day. He had problems with his trucks not working, his equipment not working. Unfortunately, in the middle of all this, his relative passed away and he took some time for that. Once the digging had been done, he had to wait for the inspector to come to observe them actually replacing the pipe. He said he knew someone and they would definitely be coming on Monday. On Monday, still no one. They finally had to replace the line without the inspector and take a video to show them when they came, but they had to leave the pits open so the inspector could see the pipe. So we finally had water, but still huge holes in our front lawn and dirt piled everywhere. This went on for a couple more days. The day they finally came to fill in the holes they said they would be there at 11 or 12. I canceled something else so I could be home, and then they didn't show up until 2. It was a very frustrating experience. I would not recommend this company to anyone. The work is done, and we have water, but I can't imagine it would have been such an arduous journey with a more professional company.

Great salesman and plumber, explained everything, giving me every option to buy various maintenance programs, and gave me a firm price quote of $348 to replace the $20 main water indoor shut-off valve, then he was done in 20 minutes, that's $984/hour! Very satisfied with the service and the shiny new valve. If you like a firm price on a project, I highly recommend. If it wasn't for the Angie's special of $200 of plumbing services for $79, I would have searched for a second quote.
