Revitalizing masonry and brick in a historic home

While searching for new homes, Brad Begle and his wife, Mary, instantly fell in love with the interior of a newly remodeled Victorian-era home in Lincoln Park. However, years of faulty repairs on the outside of the red-brick 1880s home had left the exterior in poor shape.

"There are not enough great things to say about
Midlothian Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
and his crew at
Midlothian Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
. The contractors arrived on time for both appointments we had with them. They provided a list of materials that they required (great for someone who wouldn't know drywall from fence posts...) They completed the work in an on time professional manner. They even worked with the materials that we had given them to create a wonderful, aesthetically pleasing layout with pea gravel and the bricks that we added on at the last minute. I heartily recommend this firm for any and all contracting needs.

"Mr.
Midlothian Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
is professional, polite, and courteous.
He returns phone calls, keeps appointments, and follows-through on verbal promises. This may seem simplistic, but regarding contractors, it is a rarity for appointments and verbal promises to be kept and for phone calls to be returned.
He gave me a detailed, written estimate of the costs, materials, and a narrative of the work to be done; it was necessary to change one material component due to the physical requirements of the job, but he did not increase the cost for the job.
He cleaned-up my yard and foundation area when he finished (another rarity for contractors).
Although only time will tell if his repairs to the foundation will solve the issues, I would indeed use him again. I would recommend him to friends and colleagues.

"It went wonderfully. Very polite and pleasant. Was almost done with the work before I realized it. He also went above and beyond what was required to make his work look more professional. Nothing better than pride in workmanship.

"When I purchased my house in June of 09, I (and the home inspector) noted a few issues with the front brick steps. Firstly, the mortar joints had badly deteriorated causing some of the bricks to pop out from the freeze/thaw cycle. Secondly and more troubling to me, was that the area of the foundation directly behind the stairs was consistently damp. I had tried numerous solutions to get water away from that area (gutters, grading) to no avail...still a big wet patch behind those stairs. Last month I decided not to let the problem sit any longer and called several masons to get a quote on re-pointing the steps and I hoped, their opinion on what might be causing the water infiltration. Mr.
Midlothian Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
had glowing reviews here on Angie's List, so he was one of the three that I called. One quoted the re-pointing and said he could grind out and replace the caulk strip along the expansion joint of the brick stoop and one never showed up to provide the quote. Next was Mr.

, who quickly returned my call and was able to come out about a week later to take a look. He had, I felt, a much better diagnosis of the problem - essentially poor initial construction that could only be solved by opening up the concrete stoop and fixing the underlying issue. He quoted what I considered a very reasonable price. Although a bit higher than the other mason, it included a larger scope of work. Work started as scheduled, with demolition happening on the first day. After opening things up he realized that he would need fewer materials than expected to take care of the problem. Incredibly enough, he insisted on reducing the price he had originally quoted since he wouldn't have to buy the additional flashing materials. On day two he was able to complete both the concrete pour and re-pointing. Although he wasn't able to exactly match the mortar color to the rest of the house (he had warned me of this in advance) he did a great job matching the look of the tooling and the steps look better than new. I'm also confident that he's solved my water infiltration problem and am looking forward to seeing that damp patch of my foundation disappear. Mr.

is an extremely knowledgeable professional and also an incredibly nice guy. When he came out to provide the initial quote, he took his time crawling around my crawlspace with me to diagnose the problem and offered advice on lots of unrelated repair issues I'm working on, he even stuck around for a bit afterwards to play a little guitar! Unfortunately for me, after he left I was under the crawlspace and discovered a section of sill plate on the rear of my house that has rotted out. The joys of homeownership never end, but it's good to know that there are knowledgeable and reliable folks like Mr.

out there. When I've saved up enough money to get that taken care of, I will definitely call Mr.

to bid on the project if he is interested.

"His crew severed our natural gas line in the first week. After that, there was no crew, just Mr.
Midlothian Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
. Rather than replace the rotted railroad timber wall, he extended the replacement out at least one yard. He kept raising the price. We have paid him more than the quoted price and the job is still unfinished. To make a long story short,it was an ugly situation. We now know he was not licensed during any of the time he was working on our property, despite what he told us. He has since deserted the job."

"They came and installed the push piers as planned. The workers had a great deal of difficulty as they said that our footing under the wall was very bad quality. They did the job and were able to level the sun room and so we were pleased. The brick work continued to crumble very badly. We had a few masons come in to give us an estimate on the brick work (not included in the estimate above). It turned out that the brick was not foundation but only skirting and so was not supporting the sun room at all! The sun room was supported by beams and brick columns. We had
Midlothian Masonry Contractors Provider Name Locked
come back and they moved 4 of the piers to the support columns and left one in the ground. In the end the work was OK, but we were very angry because the original recommendation was not appropriate to the job. They should have checked under the sun room rather than assume what was wrong (we are not engineers!)

"Awesome! He arrived when he said he would for the estimate, completed the work in a timely manner and cleaned up very thoroughly when done. The estimate, invoice and payment were all done on-line and so it was very smooth and easy to do business!"
