From the wall street journal online:

"Etiquette and tipping experts agree that tipping a contractor and his employees isn't expected because contractors offer to do a job for you at a specific price. Any extra money they would want would be built into their bid. Also, it's a business relationship rather than one where they are performing a personal service for you like a waiter or a maid. But if the employees do extra jobs around the house, then experts say it is appropriate to tip a cash amount equivalent to the task; "tip gifts" such as cookies and drinks can count. "The key to tipping is whether or not it was outside the scope of what was normally expected," says Mark Brenner, author of "Tipping for Success!"

My opinion is that a little bit of courtesy (snacks, drinks, expression of appreciation etc.) goes a long way and upon completion of their work you feel compelled by a job well done to offer a little extra in the form of a tip - go for it, but do not feel obligated.
?
Agreed.  If you have existing cracking in porcelain you need to know the cause first.  I don't know of any reputable contractor that would dare install tile over existing tile.  Also, any manufacturer warranties for defects would be null due to improper installation.  Did the contractor offer this solution or did you ask for it?  The mear fact that he is agreeing to or offering it tells me you need to leave this guy for someone who knows what they are talking about before he does only half the job which will have to be redone in the near future, costing you more in the long run.

I get so many calls from customers that were talked into a "cheaper" way to do something only to find the work very sub-par.  The sad part is they are out the money they spent in the first place along with the additional amount I have to charge just to undo what the first contractor did before I can do it right.  This floor could end up costing you double what it should if it's not done right.

Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
did such an awesome job with our floors! I was very nervous about choosing the right color stain for our floors, so
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
and his crew came over and sanded a portion of our floors a week before we actually started the refinishing process. He put my 3 top colors down which allowed me to live with the colors for a week and make sure I was choosing the right color stain. The color we ended up going with was actually the color he had recommended in the first place! I was pleased with every aspect of
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
and would recommend their services to anyone.

I will email the complete MS
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
doc to tellangie because I believe that these "tricks of the trade" need to be exposed.
Here is a summary.
Bottom Line: I bought a new floor; the installer ruined it and refuses to fix it to "new floor" condition. This appears to be ‘modus operandi’ for this operation.
I bought a new floor with installation from
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
to replace the carpet on a plywood subfloor. In the pre-installation, measurement meeting with
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
(not her real name) I made it clear that I would have all the furniture removed from the room except the large, heavy entertainment center. She said they were "expert movers" and could work around it and move it when necessary; there would be a $100 surcharge to move furniture. I agreed that was fair.
When they started the installation, their tiny floor nailer was not getting the staples through the flooring.
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
said they would have to get a new one. I neglected to ask WHEN they would get a new one, I assumed for my job. My entire floor was installed with a
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
-NAILER, made for installing light-weight trim to a wall. These are supposed to be professional installers for a national flooring supplier. They didn’t have the right equipment and I have a very noisy floor to show for it.
Shortly after the nailer discussion, there was another skit about the flooring size problems. This one took about 30 minutes and involved two phone calls by
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
to somebody. Basically, some of the flooring had about a millimeter width difference from one end of the board to the other. Other pieces had about a half millimeter thickness difference, giving wedge-shaped gaps and near-tripping hazards in the height changes. I had company coming in five days and couldn’t afford the time to procure another floor. After all, I am buying liquidated rejects from a Chinese flooring factory; I accepted the wood quality and told them to finish it. They left around 7:30 pm, about dark.
The next day, while admiring my new floor, I discovered deep grooves going across the middle of the room. Apparently the tiny wheels on the installer’s furniture dollies had left deep indentations where they had moved the entertainment center.
It has been 90 days since
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
came out and inspected the damage, took pictures and said they would repair it but they had to ‘put in a claim’ and that would take at least 30 days. Of course 30 days is the cutoff period for the credit card company’s ability to take action against the payee.
In those 90 days
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
(the
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
-nailer operator) has offered to cut out the 70 square feet in the middle of the living room, weave new flooring back in. The last 10 foot course would be nailed through the top or glued. Assuming he could actually weave those boards back in, this technique would leave me with a 10’ strip of glued flooring in the middle of my living room that has no
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
and groove connection on either side of it. I rejected that offer saying I bought a new floor and expect to get a new floor.
There has been no contact for the two weeks following that encounter.
Today, every time I deal with
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
, I feel like I’m going onto a Carnival Midway; I should put my wallet in my front pocket and watch my surroundings carefully.
You need to do the same!

I Initially contacted them via the Angies list website and they responded within a couple hours. We were able to set up an appointment with a sales rep to come to the house with carpet samples and measure the rooms that needed new carpet. The rep showed up right on time, was very professional, and had plenty of samples to show. On our initial phone call they were able to figure out my needs and didn't bring an overwhelming number of samples which made the decision process a bit easier. We were in a bit of a time crunch and they were able to order our carpet and have it installed even before the cut off date I needed. The installers were very fast and efficient and the new carpet looked (and smelled) great!

Contacted
Lovingston Flooring Installers Provider Name Locked
via cell phone, and arranged for him to come to the house to measure and provide an estimate. He was very flexible with the time, and came in the evening after work to meet me. He is very popular, so it took a few weeks to be worked into his schedule. The work ended up taking just over 2 days to complete. His team moved the heavy furniture from room to room. They were fantastic with dust containment and collection. The workmanship was well above average -- every cut looks perfect, and like it was original to the house. He showed up exactly when he said he would, and finished right on schedule. Great, job and I would hire him again without any hesitation.
