"l had new garage doors installed the day before by a garage door installation company. During the installation it was determined that the entire header and frame" over one of the doors had
rot and termite damage. I needed someone quickly to come and cut away the rot and rebuild the entire frame and found
on Angies List. He came within the hour and provided me with an estimate, then returned the next day to complete the work. He installed pressure treated wood to prevent future problems, and purchased paneling which matched the exterior of the garage. He completed the job to perfection.

"
continued to bring up price and how expensive the windows were. He showed me a few things about the windows it seemed like he didn't" care at all. I believe he thought I couldn't afford it and he was wasting his time. I asked him to measure and get me a quote but he wanted to reschedule a measure even though he was right here. He asked me who was making the decision on the window purchase I assured him it was me. I recall on a phone appointment confirmation yesterday that the representative stated that they looked on public record and saw that there is two homeowners on the house. I explained that my husband has recently passed away and I am the homeowner. I don't believe they relayed this to
and he stated he would not go any further without all homeowners present. I then told him my husband was dead and asked him to leave. He of course, let my dog out on the way out and I had to chase her down the block. He didn't want to deal with a women and did not take me seriously at all. Horrible experience.

Angie's Answers

?

Hello - I hope my answer will help point you in the right direction.

The reason you're having a hard time getting clear information is because there are hundreds of companies saying their window is the best. There are probably millions of different features you can choose to have for your windows and in price ranges from $169-$1200 (per double-hung window).

I've been in the business for 15 years and have seen many different window products from many different dealers and manufacturers. This all comes down to: "what's important for you and your home?" If you want a strong warranty from a company who has a full-time service department to give you piece of mind and service your windows should needs be, or are you looking at only those companies who offer true wood interior windows that you can paint or stain to match the home decor? Whatever is your hot-button, then that's where you want to start.

I would recommend you first choose how you want your new windows to look. Wood-interior with vinyl clad is only offered by certain companies, while there is a vinyl woodgrain finish to give you similar results without the maintenance. If you're only looking for a white interior and don't want the maintenance, a fiberglass or vinyl window would be the best choice from what is offered in the market today (vinyl will be less expensive - not necessarily cheaper quality). If you are going to change out a window to a french door and a door to a window, then you WILL NEED to find a contractor with some carpentry experience. Some companies will tell you upfront that they do not handle those sorts of remodeling projects due to the complexity and time it would take to get it complete.

Unfortunately, we won't be able to personally help you with your project as we work in the New England Area. However, if you wish to talk further, please feel free to email me at: sven@ritewindow.com and I'll be happy to let you know our prices for what we offer so you can compare and hopefully find a similar company to do the work for you near the Austin area.

Cheers!

Get your roofer back out there.  Course of shingles above the window need to be pulled, self sealing flashing, drip caps, and counter and step flashing are going to be required here.

This is a flashing issue as the window connects to the mansard roof surface.

Condensation and a leak are two different and very noticeably different (i.e. volume) things.

Flashing and roofing on Mansards can be tricky but is sounds very much like a roofing issue.

?

+1

Much easier to scratch and typically not as good a finished quality as compared to glass.

Benefits are the resistance to breakage as mentioned by LCD.  Any glazing shop should be able to re-create that panel.

?

For a broken window (or leaking seal in multi-pane unit), for a standard roughly 2x3 foot window, can run from low of about $75-125 for single pane to more like $200-300 range for triple pane, depending on construction and any special ultraviolet or heat reflective coatings. If a removeable window unit, of course cheaper to remove it and take to replacement glass place then have them come out, measure glass size, order glass unit, then come back to install.

If taking in yourself, commonly they can do single-pane in an hour or two, but count on a week or so typically for sealed double or triple pane unit to come in, so you will have to seal the opening in the interim. That is an advantage of having them come out - they measure and determine type of unit on first visit and can seal with tape and plastic sheeting (if you have not already done that), then come back with new unit and install a week or two down the road - but you are not stuck with an opening in the wall for a long time.

?

Thermal numbers look okay when looking at the NFRC.

Do you have any other data on them?  Air infiltration, Design Pressure, Visible Transmittance, and Condensation Resistance are all good evaluators.

http://www.mercuryexcelum.com/images/customer-files/Advantage.pdf

Air infiltration rate is way high at 0.21.

It may look nice in person but the performance numbers are below average.

The service was exceptional. The install was done ahead of schedule, the price was fair, and the installer (

The installer came out and installed the doors over the course of 6 hours or so. Since the walls in my house are wider than normal, he had to do a bit of custom fabrication to make the new doors fit. They look great! I have been very satisfied with the outcome.

I tried to shop for best price but not many contractors will even return calls. TBS does return calls promptly and sends someone over for a quote promptly. I appreciated that.
When it came time to do the work, it was done quite a bit later than I had expected and I worried that the project would not get done before the first significant snowfall. It involved work on the roof, so the stated goal was to get it done well before that. For whatever reason I waited a little longer than I had hoped to get the work done.
Their employees are friendly and do a good job. I’d recommend them, however I would in the future give myself more time to get more than one quote.

The work was done in two days, in the middle of winter. The weather didn't slow them down. They used tarps to cut down on the cold air getting into the house. It's been 1 1/2 years since the work was done and everything is still great.

Had several double pane windows with broken seals. They came and inspected and in about 15 minutes gave us a reasonable estimate to replace about nine windows which clearly needed replacing but didnt pressure us to replace more. Arranged by phone to have installed. Arrived on the agreed upon date promptly on time and in couple hours replaced all the windows. Very clean professional and courteous.

Every step of the way, each professional we dealt with knew their stuff and did it well. They are responsive and patient. They will come back out and fix the smallest detail down to an inch of caulk you aren't satisfied with. Highly recommend.

I used
Keswick Window Installers Provider Name Locked
way before I was a member of Angie's List, but I wanted to share my experience. A representative came out to my house and I picked the style of windows I wanted. We also discussed options. I had two large picture windows (68" x 105") that didn't open and I wanted something that would let the air in. They had a window that worked perfectly for that. I'm sure by now they have a lot more options, but I was pleased with what they had. The bay windows on the front of the house even had a decoration between the panes. They arrived promptly and had all the windows replaced the same day. They removed all the old windows (I was told the glass would be recycled) and cleaned up. It was a painless process. I have since sold that house, but in the approximately 8 or 9 years that I had them, I never had a problem with them. No water leaks, no air leaks, no frosting inside, nothing. I was pleased with them the entire time I was there.

We were approved for a CHIF loan to finance some energy-efficient upgrades to our old house.

, the owner of Highland Windows, came out and gave us a quote--one of four we got for the job from local businesses. His friendly, honest demeanor inspired confidence, and his price was very reasonable, but we held off until some other, more urgent work was done, then came back to him 10 months later to commit to the project.
Keswick Window Installers Provider Name Locked
remembered us, honored the original quote, and got the job done within a couple of weeks of signing the contract. When we had an issue with some of the caulk cracking around the windows after installation, he sent a workman out to correct the problem at no additional cost within a couple of days. Highland uses Alside windows, which seem to be a decent quality, mid-range replacement window. Plus, they come with a lifetime guarantee that means if you ever have any problem with them, you give Alside the serial number of the window in question and they send you a replacement.
we've now had the windows in the house for about 2 years and are happy with how they work and look. From reading up on replacement windows, the installation seems to be as critical to the efficiency of the windows as the construction of the windows themselves. I trusted that
Keswick Window Installers Provider Name Locked
would ensure the windows were installed properly--or fix it if they weren't. I have not been disappointed.
Though I expect we won't need any more window work done, I will use Highland when we get around to replacing our old doors. And I will recommend them to anyone else needing similar work done.
