Hardwood Flooring

There are few home improvement choices that add as much character and warmth — not to mention resale value — as hardwood flooring. But before hiring a flooring contractor to install or repair hardwood flooring, it’s important to know both its advantages and disadvantages.

Natural variations in your hardwood flooring reflect the time of year, as humidity levels rise and fall.

While there are still those who prefer the more traditional narrow planks, the wide plank trend is gaining momentum. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Bruce N. of New York)

What’s old is exciting and new as antiqued finishes and whitewashing techniques perk up wood flooring choices.

From the wall street journal online:

"Etiquette and tipping experts agree that tipping a contractor and his employees isn't expected because contractors offer to do a job for you at a specific price. Any extra money they would want would be built into their bid. Also, it's a business relationship rather than one where they are performing a personal service for you like a waiter or a maid. But if the employees do extra jobs around the house, then experts say it is appropriate to tip a cash amount equivalent to the task; "tip gifts" such as cookies and drinks can count. "The key to tipping is whether or not it was outside the scope of what was normally expected," says Mark Brenner, author of "Tipping for Success!"

My opinion is that a little bit of courtesy (snacks, drinks, expression of appreciation etc.) goes a long way and upon completion of their work you feel compelled by a job well done to offer a little extra in the form of a tip - go for it, but do not feel obligated.

Agreed.  If you have existing cracking in porcelain you need to know the cause first.  I don't know of any reputable contractor that would dare install tile over existing tile.  Also, any manufacturer warranties for defects would be null due to improper installation.  Did the contractor offer this solution or did you ask for it?  The mear fact that he is agreeing to or offering it tells me you need to leave this guy for someone who knows what they are talking about before he does only half the job which will have to be redone in the near future, costing you more in the long run.

I get so many calls from customers that were talked into a "cheaper" way to do something only to find the work very sub-par.  The sad part is they are out the money they spent in the first place along with the additional amount I have to charge just to undo what the first contractor did before I can do it right.  This floor could end up costing you double what it should if it's not done right.

Overall the work went very well. I was surprised to learn that he was going to sub-contract the work to another tile company. This was not a bad thing just surprising that we were not informed. The job went very well and the work was performed according to the contract. The sub-contractor was extremely professional and clearly were experts in their field.
The couple of minor concerns I had were:
The
Hurt Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
-up on the tile seemed a bit high compared to the retail price.
When we changed the tile for the power room we were charged for additional tile but when I asked for the extra original tile I was told that their was not enough. I expected to pay additional labor for the change but was surprised by the additional tile cost even though it was minor, especially without getting extra tile form the original bid
Some of the baseboards were impacted by a reduction of the height of the tile and fixing this was not in the bid (which was very detailed and excellent) but I feel that this should have been anticipated. I am very handy so I was able to fix this but was a bit of a pain.
These are very minor things. The floor looks awesome and my wife is happy.

They were very responsive From the beginning. It took one guy few hours to strip and putty the floors the first day. The next day two guys came and prepped the floors and stained it. Then it took one day per coat of polyurethane. We had three coats. They also left me some extra stain so I can use it for my stairs and rails.

came in and gave me a very competitive quote. He takes a lot of pride in the job the company does. We had to be out of the house for a few days and he communicated each day the progress that was being made on the job. They were always on the job on time and finished timely. He was very helpful and honest in helping me choose the stain color. I would highly recommend Superior and

and will use the company in the future for additional work. Thanks so much - I feel like I am living in a brand new house now that my floors are refinished!!

They never showed up on time or didn't even bother to show up on several days. I was quoted 5 days and a 3 guy crew. That didn't. happen and after two weeks and them not showing up for 4 days, I contacted another company to finish the work. The tile floor in the shower actually sloped away from the drain so the water didn't drain and collected in the back corner of the shower. The tiles on the floor were not properly glued and so the area of the tile that did not have adhesive had no support and cracked, The grout cracked in several places, where the drain is installed there was a 2" deep hole around the drain but they covered that hole with tile and no support under it, The tiles on the walls you could lift with your fingers. I had to have the new contractor tear out the whole tiled shower and start over. The tile was not included in the cost. So I ended up having to buy more tile for the new contractor to redo the shower. The new contractor took pictures and advised me to call the CCB. Of course
Hurt Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
would not refund my money. They wired the fan and light wrong so instead of 2 switches, now when you turn the light on the fan comes on at the same time. They left my house a mess and didn't clean up after themselves. Knocked a picture off the wall and broke the frame and never said anything to me about it. I know people who paid less to have a bathroom added on to their house and theirs included the tile and fixtures.

They did a shoddy job and I will be filing a complaint with the CCB.

We had a very positive experience working with
Hurt Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and
Hurt Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, in particular.
Hurt Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
helped us narrow our choices to a couple of samples. He then scheduled an appointment to bring the samples over to our home and take the necessay measurements.. We received the estimate and proceeded to purchase the flooring along with the labor to remove the old flooring and install the new. They were able to schedule the work within 2 days! UWF called the night before to confirm and again 1/2 hour before their arrival. They were very Careful to protect our furniture. They were efficient in removing the old flooring and getting the floors ready for installation. That's when we ran into a challenge. Through no fault of UWF, the floor manufacturer shipped wood flooring darker than the color that we purchased.
Hurt Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
was very quick to respond to the problem. He worked diligently to find a quick replacement. We were able to find similar flooring through a different vendor which UWF installed for us. The floors are beautiful. They did an excellent job on the floors and baseboards. I would highly recommend

- quality, value and integrity.
