required us to replace some rotted wood to ensure that the siding would indeed last a lifetime (50 years). It is probably one of the best" investments we have ever made, and I will be happy to see my house in 50 years.

-Melissa R.

"Do not even consider using this company. Please don't make the mistake my family did! My husband had found
at a small town festival" in Waterville earlier this summer. We wanted to find a company willing to help us with energy costs and would be able to give us an honest review of the layoff of our home including window and doors in order to help us determine what needed to be done for long term savings. I will say that the first meeting was with a sales gentlemen. He was very approachable and polite, but he was unsure of exactly how he could save us money or what would be needed in order to make our home more cost efficient. and wanted to bring back the owner for further review. Our second meeting was with the same sales gentleman and
Buck, who introduced himself as the the owner. He did review our concerns and the property and again both gentlemen were very approachable and polite. By the end of the sales pitch they used the same tactic as all the other reviewers stated, starting off with an astronomical price in our case of $6700, and lowering it to $4700, with a guarantee of a reduction of our electric/heating bill or they pay it for a year, etc etc. We explained to
at the time that we would need to finance the job if done immediately (
) but could pay in cash if we waited until Oct.... pushing to get the deal done, I finally decided to finance it on my own, and we could pay it off to the finance company in Oct. So a third meeting was then scheduled to sign paperwork and provide information such as my SS# and DOB for financing. DO NOT EVER DO THIS WITH THIS COMPANY. WORST MISTAKE I HAVE EVER MADE!! I completed the financing paperwork and signed documents, and was told that I would be contacted later that week with some options of banks and financing. Two weeks went by and I never did hear from the company about those banks or options, and
11th came and the crew showed up to do the work. They again were nice gentlemen, did the work - but when we checked it before they left they had only blew it into a measurement of R44, R47 is what we were told it would be blown in at, and when my husband asked the crew they stated that their R44 is equivalent to an R47... My husband said he would call
, and they headed to the door. Once at the front door the one of the workers turned to my husband and myself and asked for the credit card that was sent to us to pay for the work. 1.) What credit card? I NEVER applied to a credit card, nothing was ever stated to me or my husband about a credit card, and I was shocked... who finances home repairs with a credit card. I was shocked and confused at this point and explained to the worker that if indeed a credit card was opened and sent to us that we most likely shredded whatever envelope it came in, as that was common practice for us. He said he would go back to the office and have someone contact us about it to get a new one sent. Within days I was called by both
and the sales guy who asked me which company the credit card was through - THEY DIDN"T EVEN KNOW WHO THEY HAD APPLIED TO IN MY NAME!! They had no record of it. Which instantly made me sick to my stomach. I pulled my credit report as a last resort to find out what in the world was going on only to find that not only was there a credit card opened in my name and mailed to their business address, but also that my credit had been run by their company over 8 times in 2 days in attempt to get a new credit card sent. This was only the beginning as I called the creditor about the card and found out that it had been sent to
's business address, activated, and already used for multiple purchases around town. Currently the card has been canceled and the creditor is working with my attorney to separate any liability on me for these charges. I have since filed police reports and attempted to contact
. Instead of them being concerned about the fraud, lack of integrity, or poor service, they demanded full payment, calling us daily and finally sending our 'lack of payment' to someone up in Michigan. (Remember we only did the work immediately because it was being financed as we did not have the $$ upfront until October since we are in sales and receive our commission checks them.) I have written
a check out of my 401K to stop the constant harassment and am now working with my attorney's to clean up this mess. Our electricity bill has since increased trumping their guarantee. Sadly
has offered NO remediation or apologies for the issues at hand and is a company I strongly urge anyone to stay far far away from!!

How Much Does Siding Cost to Replace?

Vinyl, aluminum, wood and fiber cement siding all have their advantages and vary in price.

Unless they are made of brick or stone, most homes are protected by some form of exterior siding. Traditionally made of wood, siding now comes in several materials including aluminum and vinyl. Each has its strengths and weaknesses to consider.

One of the first questions I receive from homeowners looking to install siding on their homes is, “What is the best siding product?” The answer depends.

storm damaged siding

Returning home from the store with food for your big weekend cookout, you notice the siding on your house dangling loose from the recent thunderstorm.

Siding doesn't have to be boring. There are now more ways than ever to spice up your home's exterior.

Angie's Answers

Call and ask your contractors these questions.  Don't be afraid to ask questions.  It is your money and home.  I would ask for references and take a look at samples of their work (especially the low bidder).  Make sure all are licensed and carry the required insurance.  You don't want to get a bad stucco job, so do your homework first before selecting a contractor; which may not be one of these.  Check with your local building department and local building exchange for more references on these and other contractors.  Good luck.

Alside is the far superior siding. Another option with the Alside is the Center Lock panel. It locks in the center of the panel, eliminating wind blow-offs,has a 3/4 inch profile, and carries the same warranty as the Charter Oak

Both choices have plusses and minuses.

I am partial to vinyl siding myself if it is put on by a contractor that pays attention to details in sealing against water intrusion. The better grades of vinyl stand up to the weater very well. The siding on my own home is over 15 years old and shows no signs of fading or any changes due to sun exposure and have had no problems with water entry around windows or doors. It does not dent like the old aluminum siding did or break if hit by a ball or a rock thrown by a lawnmower. As long as you save a few extra panels even if a rock was to be broken by something like a rock it is easier to repair. I will add that the earlier vinyl sidings did tend to fade but I have seen homes I sided after putting additions on that were done 20+ years ago and they look fine. Those closer to the 30 year mark not as good on the fading though. I gennerally never use the cheaper panels though so I can not vouch for them but I think that as long as it is one of the better manufaturers it seems to be just panel thickness. Just a personal opinion but if you are looking for added insulation I would use one of the 4X8 or 2X8 panels rather than the insulated siding. I can not see how insulation on the back of each panel with all the joints can do much more than stiffen the panels and I would think it would hamper the movement of the panels with changes in temperature.

As for Hardi or any of the other fibre cement sidings it is way more costly and relys on caulk or tar paper strips between the panels to seal out water. It is not very forgiving on install mistakes and must be done perfectly to get the full Hardi warranty. I was just involved with a job where the contractor did not put a few pieces of flashing in properly and his guys lapped a corner board incorrectly and the Hardi lifetime warranty was void. Another thing I did not like is that it is put in with a blind nailing method and even though this house was done to specs in this area of the install the bottom of the siding was not tight to the lower courses in many spots. They did install it to the maximum exposure and I believe if they had gone to a larger panel or even lessened the exposure by 1/2" it probably would have been fine. The other thing I saw was the paint seems to be prone to scratching durring install and to me the house looked like it needed a paint job even though siding was new. I do think that if painted after install a paint job would last many years as the product is very stable and does not expand and contract much. The one big plus I see is it tend to HELP in and area prone to fires such as some ares out West.  I put the word help in capitals because it will not fireproof the home but may stop ignition from sparks and moderate heat exposure.

"Normal" construction practice dictates that the contractor remove all tools, unused materials (that you did not pay for) and scrap, and leave the worksite in a "broom clean" condition - this would include disposing (as he wishes) of removed saleable scrap - be it siding, old HVAC equipment, metal piping, etc.

Generally, unless you are talking copper sheet roofing or decorative copper ceiling panels or such, or in some cases very old in-demand recyclable timber or full-thickness hardwood flooring, the value of the metals will only marginally pay for his labor to load it and haul it to the metal recycler - especially with painted materials, which typically go for about half or less the going "clean metal" rate.
Look at the other side - how much hassle and cost will it take YOU to cut or bend the sheets into transportable lengths (since probably 10-12 foot pieces for full lengths) and haul them to a metal recycler - who may only be open during your normal work hours so you have to take time off, and maybe borrow or rent a pickup or trailer to haul it too ? All for a couple hundred $ in scrap value. Also - in some areas - scrap dealears are now limited by law to accepting construction scrap only from licensed contractors, because of the increased problem with people stripping houses and stealing from construction sites, so you as an individual might not even be able to sell it.

There operating under a different name now and did not stand behind there 10 year guarantee. I had a leak this winter and they did nothing for me. They didn't back up there 10 yr warranty.
- Bill H.

I would not recommend and would advise not to use. I hired them to do a porch repair and it was a nightmare w/shoddy work that I had to argue to get fixed, I had a door blocked in w/cement blocks. The next step was for the crew to fill in behind the door, then pour cement. I had to stop them from doing this as you could literally see between the mortar on the cement blocks they installed.
If you do end up using them, make sure every little detail is in the quote it appears their favorite saying "is it in the quote". In my case, the quote said "replace porch rails" to them that did not mean the porch steps, while they eventually did replace them. It was a discussion that should not have had to happen.
The crew also knocked off several stones from my stone-faced wall while repairing my porch. The first thing out of
Bandy Siding Contractors Provider Name Locked
Improvements project manager was "it doesn't say in the quote that we are responsible for damages". Again, they did repair but not worth hassle and aggravation.
.Finally, back to the porch rails, we were sold by the sample that was shown to us that were heavy aluminum white powder coated welded rails. The crap that they installed was light weight, spray painted, and welded horribly. Some of the rails are only partially welded on and are pitted w/holes from being burned in the welding process. As the quote only said white aluminum rails, did not state sizes, we had no recourse but to accept.

Super professional.
Bill is great to work with.
His crew is awesome. They worked tirelessly in 90+ degree/high humidity conditions without so much as a grumble.
When done, they cleaned up so all you could see is my beautiful new roof!

- Kathryn M.

They were very efficient and neat. They cleaned up debris each day. They were prompt and worked very hard through out the day. Not one bad thing I can report. Respectful of the work they were doing meaning they truly did explain work. So much so we've hired them to redo our bathroom - total gut job - will report back.
- Marianne H.

It was awful. It's been eight weeks now. I feel like they took the money and ran. The drywall they put on the ceiling had lumps. They removed texture and the texture they reapplied is bubbly. In another area you can see where the guys ran his fingers through it and they missed another spot all together. They are not responding to me to fix it.

In more than two decades of home ownership, this is the best experience I’ve had with a contractor. We had all the ingredients of a window installer’s nightmare—dry-rotted frames, vintage tile up to the sill, leaded glass, brittle siding, and lathe and plaster on the interior, which cracks at the mere vibration of an attic fan. ...More /> We were determined to hire a contractor who could carve out the ailing windows without having to reconstruct the unique character of our kitchen—and who could match the new windows to the many original windows we’re keeping. It was no task for the fainthearted (two other Milgard-certified installers turned the job down), but

and his crew,

did a beautiful job of sizing the new windows so the interior sash widths match the sashes on the original windows. We didn’t

and Dmitri installed the new windows like true house surgeons, without cracking a single kitchen tile, siding shingle, or lathe and plaster wall.
Throughout the course of the project,
Bandy Siding Contractors Provider Name Locked
was consistently accessible, responsive, and sensitive to our concerns. He patiently answered many questions, showed good aesthetic sense, and visited as often as was needed to work with us on achieving a satisfying outcome. He has earned our trust. When one of the windows arrived with a damaged screen,

took it to the Milgard factory for repair and brought it back on Saturday so we’d have a fully functioning window that hot weekend. Of the numerous contractors we consulted about this difficult project,
Bandy Siding Contractors Provider Name Locked
was the only one that offered a 20-year warranty on their window installations. If you have an older home whose original architecture you want to preserve, call

. They have the skill, commitment and integrity to do the job well. They're not cheap but not exorbitant either, and well worth it given the quality of their work.
