When he and I were trying to set up a day and time for his team to come, back in touch with me that day so we could set up our appointment. Also, I asked him for an email address; he said that he doesn't have one but his wife does and he would get it from his wife and get back to me within the hour.

He called back and left a voicemail letting me know that Monday was out of the question but Tuesday may be possible...and said nothing about any email address. I returned his call, we set up an appointment for midday Tuesday and then asked him about his wife's email address.
He said that he could get back to me much faster if I called him. I responded that I would sometimes just like to email him, even if only through his wife, and asked again for his wife's email address. He repeated that it would be much faster, saying that his wife only checks her email once a day. I responded that that's OK, sometimes I want to send him something in writing even if it's not always as fast as the phone, and mentioned his promise to give me the email address.

Yes, he has a mobile phone and can get texts on it. Hey, I don't feel like hitting Send every 160 characters, not to mention typing on my own mobile phone which is smaller than my laptop. On the other hand, I like having a routine channel for written communication that's not quite so formal as fax or mail.
That's why email's common as dirt in business today and has been for roughly two decades. It's one thing if you can only access email after hours and/or on weekends...I understand many people, even business people, don't use smartphones or carry laptops around. Or they don't want to pay for that much data.
But no email at all? In 2014?
Anyway, the project itself seemed to go well. When it came time to pay, he told me for the first time that he charged a 5% extra fee for credit card transactions. I wrote him a check, and advised him that while I know credit card surcharges are legal (a class action settlement legalized them), I'm not sure whether he;s allowed to charge more than necessary to recover his fees. He responded that his fees are indeed that high. I then mentioned that last I knew, the maximum allowable surcharge is 4% of the price. He said his wife just handles all that stuff.
As he was leaving, he warned me of some dead limbs in the tree he cut the limb from and another tree in my yard. I asked him if he could show me the limbs and he said he didn't have time, he was rushing to get to his next job.
I wish the question above about using the provider in the future allowed a "Maybe" answer, because that's what I'd say. He seems to do a good job at a satisfactory price so I'm not closing the door all the way on future business with him. On the other hand, his best
