"I called
in the morning about the job and he asked "can I come do it in a couple of hours?" which I was thrilled with. He and his son
" Jr came and within a couple of hours had everything done. He had two of the exact type of chimney caps I needed on his truck. They were both super friendly and we had a great conversation and he even helped me look at a few other issues with the house I was concerned about. I'd hire them again in a heartbeat.

"It was great. He showed up on time and got done very quickly. He was very informative. He didn't vacuum out the mess from the chimney when he was done. I don't know if he was" supposed to or not and it wasn't a huge deal but that would have been nice.

"I bought a $99.00 coupon through Angie's List, within a couple of days they called to set up the appointment for my chimney cleaning and inspection. The day of service they came" in and explained what they were going to do, they covered the fireplace and began cleaning. While one of them was cleaning from the inside, the other went out onto the roof and inspected the outside of the chimney as well as the other vents. Once they finished they showed me the before and after pictures, as well as pictures from the roof. They found a couple of spots that needed to be fixed, but they left me with the quote without trying to be to salesy.

Chimneys

If you have a wood-burning fireplace, be sure to have it cleaned and inspected regularly to reduce the risk of fire. But be careful who you hire because chimney-repair scams are common.

John Pilger of the highly rated Chief Chimney Services in Smithtown, N.Y., says shady chimney companies target homeowners in his area.

How to avoid chimney repair scams

These scams lure homeowners via phone solicitations, door-to-door sales pitches or ads offering too-good-to-be-true prices.

Chimney Sweep, Chimney Repair

Regular chimney inspection and cleaning helps prevent fires from creosote buildup and saves money on repairs. Here’s a look at what’s involved and the costs.

Chimney Repair, Chimney Sweep

Chimneys, fireplaces and vents need to be inspected at least once per year. Even an unused chimney needs to be checked for possible animal nests or damage.

The exposed portion of your chimney receives more weather abuse than any other masonry on a building, says Bard. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Jane L. of Philadelphia)

By paying yearly attention to your chimney crown to catch issues early, you can save yourself costly chimney repairs and extend the life of your chimney.

Most all professional chimney sweeps now utilize the National Fire Protection  211 Standard for chimneys, fireplaces , Vents and solid fuel-burning appliances for chimney inspections, which determines when and whether he has to access the roof.

There are 3 levels of inspection  The most commonly performed are Level 1 and level 2  are listed:

Level 1            Done as Annual Inspection

                      Routine cleaning of the flue

Direct replacement of a similar appliance

Level 1 inspection is recommended for a chimney under continued service under the same conditions with the continued use of the same appliance.

IN A Level 1 inspection, your chimney service tech should examine the *READILY ACCESSIBLE portions of the appliance and the chimney connection. HE will be looking for basic Soundness of the chimney structure and flue as well as the basic appliance installations and connections. HE will also Verify that  the chimney is free of obstruction and combustible deposits.

* Readily accessible Means that no special equipment is required to gain such access, ie.Ladder

LEVEL 2            Upon sale or transfer of a property

After an operating malfunction or an external event is likely to have caused damage to the chimney

Addition or removal of one or more connected appliances, or the replacement of an appliance withone of a different type, a different input rting or a different efficiency.

Prior to relining or replacement of the flue lining

Level 2 insp. are required when any changes are made to the system. Changes can include a change of Fuel Type, changes in shape or material in the flue,Replacement or addition of an appliance of a disimilar type, input rating or efficiency. Building fires, chimney fire or other seismic events as well as weather events or obvious construction defects would be indicators that a level 2 is warranted.

Level 2 includes everything in a level 1 PLUS the *Accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior including attic, crawl spaces and basements. it addresses proper clearances from combustible in accessible locations. There are no speciality tools required to open or access doors, panels, or coverings during a level 2 insp.  The level 2  insp should also include the visual inspection by video scanning equipment or by other means in order to examine the internaql surfaces and joints of all the flue liners inside the chimney structure. No removal or demolition or any permrnantely attached portions of the chimney or building structure or finish shall be required in a level 2 insp.

*ACCESSIBLE means if you can get to it with special equipment do it but you dont have to take apart anything for said access. Use of ladders and cameras just no demolition.

LEVEL 3  SEE NFPA 211 STANDARD FOR DETAILS

***THE REAL ANSWER to this question lies with the accessibility of the top of the chimney and roof type.  Most professional sweeps want to examine up close the top of the chimney for cracked masonry crowns , which is very common, Flashing issues, top view down flue, and for prefab chimneys to insp the condition of the Chase cover and cap.

Note that the use of a special tool (ladder) to gain access to the chimney is under a level 2 inspection, which can be additional costs since it is a much more thorough inspection.

It is possible to sweep and do a level 1 insp. without accessing the roof.

Also most professional sweeps have equipment that allows us to sweep the chimney with a rotary system that is operated from inside at the fireplace opening and achieve a much better cleaning than pushing brushes down from the top and without getting on the roof. We also video scan the flue from the hearth so the homeowner can be a part of that inspection or "chimney-oscopy". They see the live action of the top of the chimney and conditions that exist inside their system so when they get their report they know they are not some stock pics that could be used to sell repairs but the actual pics of the conditions they viewed in their system. And we do not have to access the roof.

If the chimney access requires multiple ladders or is a "brush with death", there could be extra cost, and the sweep would make an onsite decision regarding the ability to safely reach the top of the chimney or have to use a lesser option of binoculars or rely on experience to determine whats going on up top based on visible symptoms,  if access is too dangerous or not possible.

So don't discount a sweeps knowledge or ability on whether he gets on the roof or not. Check him out on referral sites , company web site, credentials, training and experience. Get referals and check on liability insurance and you should be able to find a sweep that can meet your need. If you are in North Carolina check us out at ClassicChimney.com. Chimney Repair reviews in Spring

Very responsive when called and said they would make this job a priority as it was an emergency call due to carbon monoxide leak. When they found out they could not get part to complete job on a Saturday, they suggested I try to find another service provider so I could have heat and hot water before Monday. I called several other chimney sweeps and one company said they could not schedule an appt for me until 3 weeks from now. Another company wanted to charge me $150 service call because it was the weekend. I waited for

to complete work on the Monday.
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
was prompt, courteous and explained everything. He did a great job and even took the time to inspect my fireplace chimney/valve/gas as home inspector said there was a gas leak and valve to fireplace didn't work.
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
looked at it and there were no gas leaks or valve problems. From now on, I will only use

Good luck.Provider made an appointment with me to survey my roof and give me a cost estimate for a fireplace chimney flashing repair. I took time off from work, and waited and waited. He never showed up and never called me. I called several times, and just got his voice mail. Never heard from him again. Good luck.

I used
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
4 years ago when
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
still owned it. The new owner was just as professional, prompt and easy to work with as
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
was. I had the chimney cleaned and two stainless steel chimney caps installed for around $375.00. I was so pleased with the job that I have already referred a coworker to use them for some caps he needs. I should add that I'm pretty particular about contractors and I am difficult to please. I don't recommend contractors lightly; they have to earn my referrals.
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
definitely did.

The inspection for cleaning indicated the chimney did not need to be cleaned. the estimate for installing a cap was in line with what we expected and
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
applied the Angie's List special deal price as a credit towards the cap installation.
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
recommended we have the chimney repointed before installing the cap and suggested several local masons who do that kind of work.

They cleaned the chimney, which from our house inspection (just moved in a month ago), we knew was very dirty. They showed us pictures before and after looking down the chimney. The operation/condition of the damper and fireplace screen was checked out along with the condition of the mortar joints and chimney 'crown' I think he called it (the mortar cap on top of the chimney). Suggestions were given to future repairs (the fireplace screen is in poor shape and doesn't work well for example).

Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
was great! He listened to me and my concerns. They showed up when he said they would and finished on schedule.
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
was on site participating and inspected all the work at the end. He and his crew were professional and polite at all times.
I knew the roof was in poor shape. I was not surprised when
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
showed me the problems they ran into and explained what needed to be done to repair the roof correctly. Afterwards, he explained to me the details of what they had done to make sure the roof and flashings will last. He did not gloss over problems or cut corners like the last contractor. Nor did he surprise me with lots of unexpected costs.
He took the initiative to take extra steps to make sure my roof will be problem free for many years to come, as if it were his own roof. It is truly a beautiful "Cadillac" roof now, at a reasonable cost. I will be able to relax during the next storm.
He was not the cheapest bid, but I am confident in the work he did, the quality of the roof and repairs, and his integrity as a businessman.
Spring Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
will still here doing great work long after the "bargain" companies have vanished.
