Worst Houston Contractors of 2012

Angie's List names the Worst Houston Contractors of 2012.

Important questions to ask before hiring a moving company

Ask about hidden costs. A company should be able to provide you with a list of fees you could be charged, such as moving large items or traversing stairs. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Jim R. of Travelers Rest S.C.)

Dear Angie: What questions should I ask a mover?
Dear Eric: Who you hire to move your personal belongings is a big decision. As with most services, there are scams associated with rogue moving companies.

Moving? Avoid these 3 hidden fees

Moving companies can jack up prices on boxes, ropes, dollies and blankets, so make sure you know what's included before you pack up. (Photo courtesy of Two Men And A Truck of Fort Lauderdale/Boca Raton)

If you're moving, don't get stuck with hidden fees you didn't anticipate. Moving companies can hit you with fuel costs, trip charges and equipment fees for things like dollies, blankets, cords and straps.

Tips for moving out of state

One way you can make the move easier is by weeding out items you don’t need. Have a yard sale or find a local charitable organization and donate items you no longer use. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Charles T.)

Dear Angie: I am moving out of state from Denver to Florida and am looking for tips to make the move go easier. We plan to pack boxes ourselves to keep the costs down. What advice can you give on how to pack and how to find a good, affordable mover? – Linda M., Denver

"... and very helpful.  they moved us on time and they were here on time. the men were all professional and they were here on time.  our little $8 pool didn't make it but it didn't matter and we joked about it. it cost us about $11000 because..."
"... prompt and did a good job with the estimate, but i just felt a little bit more comfortable with a different company...."
"... efficient. the team came in, surveyed the items to move, worked well together and finished quickly. the packaging portion appeared to be good enough to protect my stuff. i'll find out when i open it in korea...."
"... used these guys multiple times and they amaze me everytime. i have seen them lift refrigerators over railings, squeeze couches through impossible doorways, lift treadmills, pure oak desks, basically everything i never want to do. they actually run from the truck..."
"... experience. they are terrific. they were very polite. i think they went above and beyond. it was a really hot day when they helped me move into the house. i had told them they could just put everything in the garage, but instead they moved everything into the house for me...."
"... experience. they called the day before to confirm the appointment. tommy and julio showed up a few minutes early. yes, i said early. they set about moving immediately. at times, they ran between the truck and the house. the energy level was incredible. they..."

"... tommy arrived at my house earlier than scheduled so that they would be ready to go at the appointed time.  they finished in the amount of time as estimated and went above and beyond.  they were very friendly, not overly chatty, pleasant to my 2 year..."
