"I found
on Angie's list and called them.
called me back immediately. I sent her pictures and she quickly sent" me a quote.
spoke with me about what kind of fabric I was looking for but she also brought additional fabric samples based on my room colors. She was on my side of town, so she brought the samples and picked up the stools the very same day! They delivered them back to me the very next week and they look fantastic! I am so happy with the quality of there work but even more with the professionalism and speed. The delivery and pick up and in home fabric service is worth every penny to me!
was so sweet and gave me opinions on the fabrics/colors. I couldn't be happier and highly recommend this company.

"We wanted this family heirloom to be re-upholstered and have the seat re-done to sit more appropriately. We were incredibly surprised with how well it looked when" we picked it up and how outstanding the work on this piece was. We were very pleased with the price, the information received when we brought it in and how there were no other
charges but exactly what we had been told it would be. The work was accomplished in very short order and everything about our contact and the work done at
was exceptional. If we have more pieces to be re-done we will bring them back for additional work.

Should I hire an upholstery professional for my furniture?

Many people have no idea of the costs or benefits in reupholstering a piece of furniture. Learn how upholstering can benefit your current furniture.

Upholstery

Upholstering is the process of covering a high-quality piece of furniture, antique or keepsake with materials such as fabric and padding. Freshen the look of a room by giving furniture a new look.

Experts say reupholstery can give older, quality furniture a good-as-new look. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Krystal C., Brooklyn, N.Y.)

Consumers should consider the quality of furniture and its sentimental value before deciding whether to invest in upholstery repairs for couches and chairs.

Angie's Answers

?
I second the original question (still unanswered). Speaking as someone who logged in today to try to find an attorney, I see this category as one that's exactly what I have my Angie's List membership for:

1. It's important that I find a good one
2. I'm not an expert enough to know myself who is a good one
3. The industry is full of advertisements and misinformation
4. I wish I knew what experiences other people have had

?
I don't care about lawns--I planted mine in clover and don't have to mow it. When I do need to mow I use a rotary Fiskars mower, which is great--or a scythe. That's right--a scythe (the European type, which is smaller, and it's very good exercise). Gas-powered mowers, chemical fertilizers and weed killers--all nasty stuff that gets into everyone's air, soil, and water. I'm sure my neighbor doesn't like my wildflowers, semi-wild pockets of fruit bushes, and unmown areas and yes, dandelions (I have 10 acres) but that's too bad. It's better habitat for wildlife, especially the pollinators on which our food supply depends. I think this obsession with the Great American Lawn is a waste of time and resources. Plant some food instead.

?
I'm not sure Angie et. al. want you to have a complete answer to this question. By re-subscribing at the Indiana State Fair in 2012, I think I paid $20.00 per year for a multi- year subscription. Maybe even less. At the other extreme--and I hope my memory isn't faulty about this--I think the price, for my area, for ONE year was an outrageous $70.00. And they debited me automatically without warning. I had to opt out of that automatic charge. I like Angie's List, but if some of the companies they monitor behaved the way they do in this respect, they'd be on some sort of Pages of Unhappiness. I'll be interested to see if this comment gets published or censored out of existence.

You have to put your self in the shoes of a business that is in business to turn a profit of some sort. All businesses have different overhead which in turn decides what their bottom line would be on their services. I personally would not go with an unlicensed professional for this type of install. You are messing with gas, venting issues, electrical wiring{electric water heater} and updated code issues such as a drain pan and tempature and relief drain lines for heaters that currently do not have them. I do agree that there are some companies that are way out of line for their installs but most of these companies are the really big companies that have very high overheads  I would assume. Tank type water heaters have changed over the last several years and with these safety changes come bigger prices. The price of steel thanks to China is skyrocketing and tank type water heaters are made of steel. Most wholesale plumbing supply companies cannot match what the big box stores are selling at retail to consumers. I happen to think from research that heaters such as Rheem, Bradford White and AOSmith who have been in business forever make a better product than what you can buy in the big box outlets. You also have to take in consideration the location of the water heater that is being replaced. Is it in the house, basement, garage or attic. Most 40 and 50 gallon water heaters that are purchased in a plumbing wholesale store in Texas cost between 300-340 for a 6 year warranty heater with 6 year on parts and tank. Speaking of warranty. Most big box companies will take a least 24 hours to a week to get your warranty problem taken care of. Most reputable plumbing companies will give same day service if they installed the heater.

So lets break down a typical install at cost to a licensed plumber in Texas

Heater: $315, water shut off $6.50, water flex lines or unions to code $20, gas flex line and cut off to code $12, misc fittings $15, Total $368.50 Lets add a 35% profit which is some what low  for a business $129, Total 497.50

This doesnt  include permits, pan and drain or any venting issues. The vent must go from the heater to the outside of roof using double wall vent.

Cost of permit on average $60

Most plumbing companies allow for 3 hours of time for a water heater. This includes picking the new one up. Delivering out to house. Draining and removing old water heater. Hauling off old heater. Installing new heater up to code. Going down to city and pulling permit.

Average Labor charges for heater installs $400

That would make this install run without extras on any code issues $957.50

I just had a 50 gallon gas water heater installed in my house for $1200 but I needed a pan installed. I used a licensed plumber.

?

That's very difficult to answer without seeing the house. As one poster said, the prep is the most important part. On newer homes that don't have a lot of peeling paint, the prep can be very minimal even as low as a couple or a few hundred dollars for the prep labor.

On a 100 year old home with 12 coats of peeling paint on it, then the prep costs can be very high and can easily exceed 50% of the job's labor cost.

A 2100 sq ft two story home could easily cost $1000 just for the labor to prep for the paint job. That number could climb too. Throw in lots of caullking  or window glazing, and you could be talking a couple or a few hundred dollars more for labor.

Painting that home with one coat of paint and a different color on the trim could run roughly $1000 or more just for labor. Add a second coat  and that could cost close to another $1000 for labor.

For paint, you may need 20 gallons of paint. You can pay from $30-$70 for a gallon of good quality exterior paint. The manufacturer of the paint should be specified in any painting contract. Otherwise, the contractor could bid at a Sherwin-Williams $60 per gallon paint and then paint the house with $35 Valspar and pocket the difference. $25 dollars per gallon times 20 gallons? That's a pretty penny too.

That was the long answer to your question. The short answer is $2000 to $4000 and up, depending upon the amount of prep, the number of coats, the amount of trim, and the paint used.

?
Todd said it best.

An itemized list / cost breakdown, more often than not is used against the contractor when it is shared with other builders who will then beat it.

Good contractors use good people, and good people cost more.  Just the cost of having the appropriate insurance / bond can be the difference between winning a job or losing it ot a 'lower bid'.

It is the rule of three; there is Good, Cheap and Fast.  You can have any two:  Good and Cheap, won't be Fast; Good and Fast, won't be Cheap;  Cheap and Fast, won't be Good!

When comparing bids, it isn't the cheapest or the 'nicest' person you should select.   You should understand why there is a large price difference (it shows there are gaps in your design program or what you have asked for specifically, which means there may be arguments later).  If most of the bids are in line, and one is way high or way low,  you want to know why before dismissing or selecting them.

A price-only decision almost always costs more in the long run.

Good luck!

September 2014, I ordered the fabric thru
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Fabrics on
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Rd and, as required, paid for the fabric and 1/2 the cost of upholstery labor up front - over $2200. I am assured by
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Fabrics that their upholsterer is THE BEST, a craftsman, work will be PERFECT! My furniture was in perfect condition, I just wanted to update fabrics. I trusted
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Fabrics and their (supposed) reputation. The ordered fabric arrives to
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
, about 40 yards of fabric,
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
(
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Upholstery who is
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
's upholsterer) picks up my furniture (charges $75 - cash) mid October. Furniture is delivered back to me on November 22, 2014. Furniture looks awful!! I question
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
about the raw, unfinished edges on the sofa, chair, and ottoman skirts. He replies that it is "okay" and that the fabric was "thick", he had no other way to do it. I call his cell about an hour after he left to question more things I am seeing. The more I look, the more upset I get. He states he will work on the ottoman after the holidays. (He IS a nice guy, just does sub par work). January 2015, he comes to my home, picks up the ottoman, states he will do what he can to fix it. Sofa and chair stay in my home, no offer to try to fix them. I am still thinking there is "some" resolve to this, trying to be hopeful, but incredibly sad and angry at what was done to my furniture. February 7th he delivers the ottoman back to me. Although the welt cording isn't twisted (the welt coding on ALL of my furniture was NOT done on the bias so it is twisted and rumpled) the skirt was re-attached with wrinkles, loose fiberfill placed on top of the ottoman so there are now "ripples", and the cording is still pieced and not on the bias. Skirt on ottoman looks horrid. Fast forward... I had a quality upholsterer (25+ years in business, referred by quality furniture stores and interior designers) assess my furniture (March 2015) hoping that he could salvage what
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Upholstery did, with the idea that all of the welt cording on all three pieces could be replaced. There cannot be any salvaging of any of this. What was demonstrated to me was that
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Upholstery not only miss cut the welt cording, but given the unfinished edges of the skirting, the pattern and grain of the fabric being mismatched, the zippers installed off center on the bottom cushions of the sofa, different sizes of welt cording were used so the furniture looks awkward, numerous raw unfinished/unhemmed areas, and (the worst no-no!!) the re-use of the previous decking, this would require a total makeover. I am officially out well over $3,300 given the fabric cost loss and labor. We will pursue legal avenues to recoup our losses.
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
is a very nice guy. He is pleasant and respectful. If you are entertaining using him for quality pieces, look elsewhere. I have 20k plus of furniture that looks like it came from the bargain area of Value City.
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Fabrics (and
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Upholstery) do not deliver what is promised. Additionally, the owner of
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Fabrics could care less about customer satisfaction or, for that matter, even discussing any kind of an equitable solution if there is a problem. She is rude and disrespectful, and only is interested in being paid, regardless of quality or satisfaction. She clearly made a profit on what she paid to
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
Upholstery, her subcontractor/employee. Quality work was expected, promised, and was not delivered!

is great. He worked on my springs of my front seats and my rear package tray. On the front seats, he noticed that some of the foam was dry, he called me and replaced it. He is my go-to for any upholstery work whether it's one of my classic cars, our regular car, or in our home.

I received phenomenal service when I visited their location. They assisted me in selecting the right fabric color and type for the welting on my chairs. They also visually showed me how the foam cushions in my chairs was no longer supportive, the seats were starting to show a valley versus a hill, and needed to be replaced. The seats had not be recovered in close to 20 years, so they definitely needed it, but I did not think of that when I brought them in to have them recovered. I am glad they brought that issue to my attention

It went great! They told me it would take four days but they called me in three days saying the cushions were ready to be picked up. The cushions were eight years old and flat as a board. They are fully stuffed now and very comfortable - just what we wanted!

was very responsive and gave me a quote per a texted picture within minutes of our first contact. His price (I bought the fabric) was 1/2 what another business quoted me per chair. He picked up the furniture immediately, finished within two weeks and delivered them himself. The chairs look fabulous and I highly recommend him for your upholstery projects!

Its amazing how well things go with contractors that specialize and focus on one thing --
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
are the EXPERTS in furniture restoration and repair! My grandfathers chair was almost 40 years old, and had a high sentimental value with me...when he passed, I knew I wanted to take care of the chair and pass it on down my kids. So, taking the time needed, the research and ability of
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
to find the right fabric, do the wood restoration and repair the chair were critical to this job.
They exceeded all expectations on all levels. The chair looks fantastic, and is not only repaired to full functionality, but the new fabric and wood is the highest quality grade and I can tell the incredible effort that went into the restoration.
Denton Upholsterers Provider Name Locked
(the owner) handled the entire process from start to finish and I felt like I was his only customer.
Without a doubt, I highly recommend

They replaced the foam with very firm replacement which filled out the cushions (cut 1/2 inch larger than original) and it is like new. It was a fabulous experience and instead of buying a new couch and chair that would have cost triple or quadruple, I have a great couch and chair to enjoy for years more to come. My hunter green color is back in style too so it is a
