"They were extremely professional. The water heater developed a slow leak and needed to be replaced. The company sent out the techs as promised and performed the" required work within promised time frame. Also, nice that they do not charge extra for coming out on the weekend. I would definitely use them again in the future.

"So the tech appeared in my drive way at the stroke of 4:30 PM as promised. He drained and removed the 20 year old hot water heater. He unboxed and prepared the shiny" new 50
Rheem hot water heater. He moved it into place and hooked up the electricals, plumbed the pipes and turned that baby on. It worked like a charm. Good job C & D. On time, on budget: you
love it.

When Should I Replace My Water Heater?

Angie Hicks responds to a homeowner who says her water heater is past its expected lifetime.

Water heaters

Standard storage tank water heaters typically need to be replaced after about a decade, but they can last years longer with some homeowner maintenance. When the time comes to buy a new one, there are more options for consumers to consider.

Your family’s needs play a large role in whether a storage or tankless water heater is right for you.

A tankless water heater takes up less room and heats water on demand. It can last more than twice as long as a standard tank water heater. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Patti C. of Mobile, Alabama)

There are good reasons why many folks choose to go tankless. Learn why saving money isn’t one of them.

Changes coming this year will make water heaters more energy efficient, but may create some difficulties for homeowners.

You have to put your self in the shoes of a business that is in business to turn a profit of some sort. All businesses have different overhead which in turn decides what their bottom line would be on their services. I personally would not go with an unlicensed professional for this type of install. You are messing with gas, venting issues, electrical wiring{electric water heater} and updated code issues such as a drain pan and tempature and relief drain lines for heaters that currently do not have them. I do agree that there are some companies that are way out of line for their installs but most of these companies are the really big companies that have very high overheads  I would assume. Tank type water heaters have changed over the last several years and with these safety changes come bigger prices. The price of steel thanks to China is skyrocketing and tank type water heaters are made of steel. Most wholesale plumbing supply companies cannot match what the big box stores are selling at retail to consumers. I happen to think from research that heaters such as Rheem, Bradford White and AOSmith who have been in business forever make a better product than what you can buy in the big box outlets. You also have to take in consideration the location of the water heater that is being replaced. Is it in the house, basement, garage or attic. Most 40 and 50 gallon water heaters that are purchased in a plumbing wholesale store in Texas cost between 300-340 for a 6 year warranty heater with 6 year on parts and tank. Speaking of warranty. Most big box companies will take a least 24 hours to a week to get your warranty problem taken care of. Most reputable plumbing companies will give same day service if they installed the heater.

So lets break down a typical install at cost to a licensed plumber in Texas

Heater: $315, water shut off $6.50, water flex lines or unions to code $20, gas flex line and cut off to code $12, misc fittings $15, Total $368.50 Lets add a 35% profit which is some what low  for a business $129, Total 497.50

This doesnt  include permits, pan and drain or any venting issues. The vent must go from the heater to the outside of roof using double wall vent.

Cost of permit on average $60

Most plumbing companies allow for 3 hours of time for a water heater. This includes picking the new one up. Delivering out to house. Draining and removing old water heater. Hauling off old heater. Installing new heater up to code. Going down to city and pulling permit.

Average Labor charges for heater installs $400

That would make this install run without extras on any code issues $957.50

I just had a 50 gallon gas water heater installed in my house for $1200 but I needed a pan installed. I used a licensed plumber.

I've seen and heard mixed reviews.  They aren't really popular here due to our super hard water which clogs and rots everything it sits in.  A company I used to work for tried electric units about 10 years ago in several homes but had to replace many of them within a few years because the build-up from the hard water hindered their productivity to little more than enough supply to run a sink.  I've heard better success with gas units since there are no electric elements to burn out and gas can get hotter, faster to get through the deposits on the tubing walls inside the unit.

Standard electric water heater usually take a 30 amp circuit so they are often wired with 10 guage wire.  Electric on-demand units large enough to service an entire house usually take 50 amps (or more) from what I've researched in the past.  That means they need a 50 amp breaker and will be wired with 6 guage wire.  By the time you factor in the initial cost of buying the much more expensive on-demand unit and rewiring for it I'm not sure you'll save money in the long run.

A better and cheaper option would be to put a timer on your standard water heater so it only kicks on during typical demand times.  They have override switches so you can turn it to cycle normally when you are off of work or need it during the day/night if not during the preset times.  A cheaper point of use water heater at the kitchen sink will ensure you have hot water there even when the main heater is off.  This is usually the point that requires hot water the most frequently.  Remember that your water heater will hold hot water for over an hour once it has cycled off.  Take advantage of that.

There could be. Different municipalities have different rules (codes). However, I have never heard of a plumber being the code enforcement guy. I have never heard of a plumber being able to collect a fine from a homeowner. It may cost you $150 to bring it up to code, but that should be included in the repair cost. You would need to check with your city (usually Department of Code Enforcement or Plumbing Commission). If he put it in writing, you need to send them a copy.
?
Make sure they get a permit if required. Ask if they will haul away the old. Type of new heater installed and tank warrantee. What kind of parts will the price include, you should have an expansion tank installed and make sure they counter balance the pressure to match the static pressure in the home. Should also include new dielectic unions, do not reuse the old ones. See what the rate for extras is in case they need to do additional work. Check references if possible.

He showed up with everything that was required to do the job the first time and was very meticulous about his work. Cleaned the entire pit and surrounding area. Showed me the price list from his supplier for the parts and wrote a detailed invoice all broken out. I have used them before and they will always be my first call for any plumbing projects or problems that I have.
They also specialize in repairing water service from what I understand.

I've used Presidential for years, mostly for changing out water shutoff valves and replacing an electric water heater. They're responsive, polite, don't use high-pressure sales tactics and are a pleasure to work with. The ceiling in our basement was damp and it turns out when the previous owners had the first floor bath remodeled, their contractor attached PVC tub drain piping directly to the existing original 1950s iron pipe; there weren't enough threads to make a tight seal and when we were releasing large quantities of water (i.e. baths), it was gushing out around the joint. The guys from Presidential figured out and explained the problem and fixed it all within about 3 hours.

Well, I purchased the deal through Angie's list, and in a matter of hours was contacted by the company, so kudos on the prompt response.
However, it wasn't until after I was contacted (and after my card was charged) that I found out that they no longer service my area - less than 25 miles away.
I'm not sure who gets the
Columbia Water Heater Installers Provider Name Locked
's share of the blame. I certainly couldn't find anywhere on the internet what cities they were willing to service and which they weren't. Is that my problem? The company? Maybe it's something Angie's list needs to work on. Why list a deal if I can't use it? I found someone else happy to take my money, but I still have $950 tied up for 2 days.
Anyway, if you're downriver, just best to find someone else. If you're anywhere else - just call before you tie up money in a 'big deal'.

I called them and the guy came over. He went underneath it and there were no air vents. He took out rocks and I haven't had any problem since. They really got more and more expensive in the way of their service contract. They're charging $600 for the year. The guy was here for less than an hour. When they called and said they would come, they did. They also called and that's what I like too. I felt confident that they called me half an hour before they came.

Work went well. There was a $200.00 increase over listed deal price due to manufacturer's price increase, but the price was inline with same deal offered by other Angie's List contractors. This deal just had not been updated.

It took 4 weeks to get the repair done. The first couple were because I emailed them multiple times and never got a response. I eventually decided to call and they said they never got the emails from Angie's List. The rest of the time was them coming out to look and then getting scheduled. Big deal no, but not great service either.
I have MS so getting up early for me is an issue. They scheduled the appointment at 8am. I asked if they needed anyone to be home, they said no, they would just do all the work outside. Needless to say at 8:15a the doorbell rings and again at 9:10a asking for a check for $400 as they were done. Big deal no, but very annoying given they said they wouldn't do that.
The estimate was $400. Since until they started digging the extent of the job wasn't really known, this seemed reasonable for an estimate.
However, the actually work done was 55 minutes of plumbers time and $5 in material.
The work done seems fine but I can't say I feel basically $400 for an hour of plumbing work was a good deal. It feels like that estimate was a minimum only to be adjusted up if the work was a lot more than anticipated, but not down if it was less. But I agreed to the estimate so I paid the $400.
Bottom line is I rated it a B overall because I can't say they did anything horribly wrong but they took a month to come, ignored the request to not wake me up early due to my health, and $400 per hour for plumbing work still doesn't feel like a bargain.

They came out quickly and got it done in good time. I have rental properties and have bought numerous coupons form

H&C before and normally all goes well however this time for some reason the installers said I had to have extras put on the tank, extras that added up to $150+ in additional charges - extras that just a couple months ago I didn't have to have at my own home when I had a HWT installed. I wasn't present to question the extras (expansion tank & drain
