We had a contract with
for them to rip out old duct system and replace it with a 3 Ton Hard Pipe Duct System. We got an estimate from the company for $1100 for removal and $3500 for install and return ducts cleaned back in January when we were negotiating the purchase of our house. We told the estimator that we needed to make sure that everything was covered in the estimate as the number was being used in our negotiations of purchasing this house. We were able to get the full amount of the estimate back in our loan for the renovation of the house. If they had told us there was a possibility of hundreds more, we would have been able to negotiate that and get that money back. They told us they were confident this is how much it would be.
The plan of the project was to get ductwork removed in April (which they did), have our floor fixed (sistering joists and lifting house), have them install hard pipe 3 ton duct system (projected for the beginning of May), and then have the crawlspace encapsulated with dehumidifier. It was the plan from the very beginning, as the company that did the encapsulation wanted to do it last so that the hard pipe duct work and the installers could not tear up our new encapsulation.
They came to start the install. Apparently they were mad from the beginning that they had to work in the dirt and that it wasn't already encapsulated, though no one communicated that to me until everything fell apart. The installer and I spoke and I showed them the new access hole we had put in our crawlspace so they could access the tight portion under our house for the install. We had this done to make it an easier job for both contractors. We were trying to be proactive and helpful because we know that one portion of our house is hard to access.
The installers worked most of the day and then when we realized in the afternoon that they hadn't taken out an old piece of ductwork (flex line that had been under the house for 25 years) we asked them about it. THey said they were leaving it under there. We were contracted for a complete installation. I emailed with them and let them know we were having a termite treatment done after the removal, a mold and fungus fumigation, and that the workers were sistering joists. They knew all this and still left an open flex duct. They must have expected us to not realize it hadn't been replaced. Luckily, we checked.
They said they can not replace the full system because there is a section under our house that is too small for them to access. Why didn't they tell me that when they were here for an hour doing the estimate? Why didn't they say that in the contract or indicate the flex duct would be left? They are telling us to keep a flex duct that is 25 years old and likely has a hole in it. The flex duct has been open and exposed to mold treatment fogging, termite treatment spray, and dust from the sistering of joists under our house that happened after they removed the rest of the duct work. They did not seal up the flex duct or let us know that they were planning to keep using it. They left it open knowing that we were doing construction, mold treatment, and termite spray for weeks. Any good company would know better than to continue to use the old flex duct, but they decided to go the easy route and use it AND not tell us. We would have never known if we didn't go under our house and look at it. We would have been breathing in mildew fogging treatment and termite poison and would likely be causing more mildew on our floor joists from the leak if we had not gone and found this problem.
They told us that our only option was for them to come clean the flex duct or they would remove the entire system that was almost completed. Anyone who knows about duct work can tell you, there's a good
they will tear another hole in it and it needs to be replaced just about every 20 years any way. It's been under there for 25 years!
We are trying to be good people about this, but we paid them $1100 for 2 hours of work to remove our old duct work and there's still debris in our yard from when that took place almost 2 months ago. Most of all, they were almost done installing and decided to back out and remove all of the duct work they installed in a day because it's easier for them to walk away than to honor the contract or to negotiate a way to make sure we have air conditioning in the whole house. Their installer seemed to think it wouldn't be a big deal to cut a hole through our subfloor to run the duct, and we said we would be okay with that. They said no they would only clean the flex duct because that would cost them another day's labor. We told them that we would consider any options that allowed us to have CLEAN air conditioning in our whole house. They did not respond and sent the installer to remove all of the ductwork. They left all kinds of crap under the house and hanging metal straps from our brand new wood (we had replaced center sill, outer sill and most of the joists under our house). I wish I could attach photos.
We haven't had air conditioning in the
heat since April 1st (2 and a half months). We waited for weeks to get on their schedule because we felt good about this company because of their Angie's List ratings. They came to get all of their stuff and looks like they didn't plan to honor their contract.
I then wrote a review on Facebook and called and asked to speak to the owner. I felt extremely bullied. All I ever wanted was air conditioning that included a full HVAC installation (all new). I told him that there had to be some way for that to happen. He said they did not have guys that could fit under my house and continued to tell me that the company that did the encapsulation didn't know what they were doing because they couldn't get under there either. When I talked to that company, they told me repeatedly to not worry a bit because there's always a way. And they did. With no complaints.
At the end of the phone conversation with the owner of
, he told me that they could run a line up our supply closet and cut new vents in from the attic. We said sure -- open to any idea that gets us air conditioning. He said once we had it encapsulated to email the office and they'd get us on the schedule. Within days the encapsulation was started and they gave me a hard finish date so we could schedule air conditioning. The encapsulation company even worked on Saturday & Sunday to get us completed asap so we could get air conditioning in the 100 degree days.
Meanwhile, emails later (email on 6/25, email on 6/26) and a phone call, I still hadn't heard back from
. When I had called, the office person said she had to ask the owner before she could schedule us. On 7/2 I still hadn't heard back from them. The only reason we were still trying to use them through all of this crap is because we had the checks cut in our closing (HUD - when we purchased our house) and we had to go back through the attorney and paperwork to get it switched and it wasn't going to be easy. In the end, it's what we had to do after not hearing back from them.
We went through the paperwork, met with the attorney, got another check cut. Then I had to email them on 7/2 to get confirmation that our contract was void. On 7/3 they emailed me that it looked like they could install us on 7/8. We had already made other plans. NO AC for 3 months in
and this is how we're treated.
The one conversation I did have with the owner, he said "I read your very lengthy review on Facebook." Well, I sure hope everyone does before hiring this company! I have never worked with such a bad company. Ever. I have never felt more bullied. And we just put $35k in our house and have worked with 5+ contractors. (Read my other reviews -- ALL positive)
On another note, I do recommend
Heating & Air and Moisture Control Experts 100x over. When
Heating & Air came, I didn't give them any of these details and asked them what they thought about the job. He said, it's an easy job and we can do it this week since you don't have AC (put us in the front of hte line). I said are you sure it's easy, pointing out the smaller crawlspace side. He said they have to have installers that can fit under there; they do it all the time. They quoted the same price without even knowing about our prior ordeal. Installed 2 days later and working great!
And MOisture Control Experts motto was, there's always a way! Never say it can't be done. Thank goodness for good, honest companies!
We didn't have air conditioning from 4/1 to 7/11 in
because of this ordeal!

Our a/c had been freezing up and we smelled something that had burned out. They came out identified the problem, got the old unit running until new one could be installed . This was a difficult task as previous people that worked on unit had rigged up various things that were not correct! As it turned out, they had to come back one more time before new unit out in place. The install took most of the day. The crew were extremely polite and neat. The owner ,
, runs a tight ship and is very experienced. The night after I noticed that I had some water spots on a ceiling. He and the crew were here IMMEDIATELY to check the cause. They removed the water, treated the ceiling so no mold would grow and came back the next day to install a different type of duct box to prevent this from happening again. His crew and he then dried and painted the ceiling. Two days later he returned to put another coat of paint on and make sure all was well. We now have a great, efficient system that I don't want anyone else to touch!! They really did a fabulous job!!

The new unit was installed. The technicians built a deck for the unit to sit on, hauled the old deck away and left my yard neat and clean. I would recommend this company to someone that wants quality service. The price is a little high to me, but I am very frugal, however, we have an extended warranty. I am looking forward to this winter to see how our electric and gas bill run. As of now, I am enjoying the comfort of the new unit in this awful humid climate! I pray our new unit continues to give us great service for years to come! I should add, I picked this company because it has been in the

area a very long time and Mr.

I had made contact with a total of 4 other well-known local
Charleston HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
heating & air companies. I was not familiar with
Charleston HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
but did see them on Angie's list so added them to companies I was contacting for free inspection/appraisal. All $ estimates were the same between companies. I chose
Charleston HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
over the others due to the following: they were initially 'heads above the rest' - scheduling with me & after inspection promptly getting back to me by phone and by e-mail with a very professional detailed and thoroughdescription of the work that I needed to have performed (with pictures of my unit & ductwork displaying wear - they went underneath my crawlspace to provide a picture of external ductwork). I had companies inspect my split system in garage & in yard while I was at work - one well-known company called me at work from my driveway and when I told them where to get under the house they said why would they need to go under there? Another well-known company I contacted and had a long conversation with never got back with me & when I called again could not remember talking with me & then after inspecting never got back with me, and so forth. One company actually said they could not provide services to me due to a conflict of interest - that another local heat & air company owner had my same last name! Over a period of 2-weeks I had 5 different evaluations or attempts at evaluations, and as I said,
Charleston HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
kept coming up 'heads above the rest'. I am enjoying cold air this summer &am looking forward to a warm home this winter. I would highly recommend
Charleston HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
to others. I researched their product

, and
Charleston HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
is current day running neck to neck with Carrier product. Local company with Carrier product pretty much just wanted to sell me their product - actually said I could just use my old same external ductwork , drains, etc. - when I knew better from
Charleston HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
photos as well as what was already visible. Lesson to pass on to others from my experience: product is important, but installation (installers!) is even more important.

The whole crew was terrific. We bought the system from
Charleston HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
, who was extremely knowledgeable, patient (while we did our research and got quotes) and accommodating. The installed the system on short notice (right before a heat wave, when we have relatives coming in from out of town), and they did a fantastic job. The guys who did the installation worked hard and were very friendly and professional. I don't have a bad thing to say about this company.

Technician diagnosed problem and ordered part. Office kept us informed of order status and promptly scheduled installation at a time most convenient for us. After mostly bad relationships with several other A/C repair companies, we are very happy to find a reliable, likable company. Definitely will use them for future work.

Both systems inspected in a timely and deliberate manner. Problems were correctly determined and repair costs explained. Materials for repair were on the truck so there was no delay in getting unit up and running again. The service technician was very professional , knowledgeable and friendly. He was also very patient in answering dozens of my "how and why" questions. A good 2 hour experience. I will definitely be using
Charleston HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
again for my heat /ac repair needs and suggest that others give them a try..

ARS originally installed my unit and I was going to call them for a winter inspection when I saw the Angie's List deal. The inspection would have cost approximately $70. I am very pleased with Angie's price and the service by ARS.

did an excellent job. The service technicians were extremely professional and prompt. They completed the job as promised and stood behind their work. The owners and the office staff were friendly and very efficient. They are very ethical and followed up with me to ensure that I was happy with the quality of the completed work. I highly recommend this company to anyone that needs spray foam insulation installed/applied.

Charleston HVAC Contractors Provider Name Locked
was professional and did what was needed to fix the a/c unit and not try to tell me that it was a total loss and try to sell me a new unit. He's honest and reliable. I've used them for my office and home over the past 4 or 5 years and wouldn't use anyone else.
