"The day the Dustless Flooring team arrived we had lost all heat in the house and it was 10 degrees outside. They took it in stride, and even tried to help us figure" out the heating problem, talked with the heating repairmen who arrived after I had to leave for work, had to delay their work for three hours, and still finished the job within the scheduled time frame. The floors are absolutely stunning. And the process was indeed dustless. No dust in the house. I would highly recommend this company. Easy to work with, friendly, professional, and went above and beyond for us.

"Came in and did service when and time period they promised. We did not like the final product, due to the damage of our floors and they said there may be a problem" with the large scratch
that we made. They came back and sanded and refinished out floors with a credit of what we spent on the original contract of just sandless refinishing. They were wonderful to work with. I would recommend them to anyone.

Hardwood Flooring

Few home improvement choices add as much character and warmth — not to mention resale value — as hardwood flooring. But before hiring a flooring contractor to install or repair hardwood flooring, it’s important to know both its advantages and disadvantages.

Wood is a living, breathing product that contracts and expands as it releases and absorbs moisture. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Danica K. of Independence, Ohio)

Natural variations in your hardwood flooring reflect the time of year, as humidity levels rise and fall.

While there are still those who prefer the more traditional narrow planks, the wide plank trend is gaining momentum. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member Bruce N. of New York)

What’s old is exciting and new as antiqued finishes and whitewashing techniques perk up wood flooring choices.

From the wall street journal online:

"Etiquette and tipping experts agree that tipping a contractor and his employees isn't expected because contractors offer to do a job for you at a specific price. Any extra money they would want would be built into their bid. Also, it's a business relationship rather than one where they are performing a personal service for you like a waiter or a maid. But if the employees do extra jobs around the house, then experts say it is appropriate to tip a cash amount equivalent to the task; "tip gifts" such as cookies and drinks can count. "The key to tipping is whether or not it was outside the scope of what was normally expected," says Mark Brenner, author of "Tipping for Success!"

My opinion is that a little bit of courtesy (snacks, drinks, expression of appreciation etc.) goes a long way and upon completion of their work you feel compelled by a job well done to offer a little extra in the form of a tip - go for it, but do not feel obligated.
?
Agreed.  If you have existing cracking in porcelain you need to know the cause first.  I don't know of any reputable contractor that would dare install tile over existing tile.  Also, any manufacturer warranties for defects would be null due to improper installation.  Did the contractor offer this solution or did you ask for it?  The mear fact that he is agreeing to or offering it tells me you need to leave this guy for someone who knows what they are talking about before he does only half the job which will have to be redone in the near future, costing you more in the long run.

I get so many calls from customers that were talked into a "cheaper" way to do something only to find the work very sub-par.  The sad part is they are out the money they spent in the first place along with the additional amount I have to charge just to undo what the first contractor did before I can do it right.  This floor could end up costing you double what it should if it's not done right.

We contacted
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
at the end of
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, 2014 at our second home.. He met with us promptly and said the job would take about two weeks. The job was not finished until early April. As he had to remove all moldings, we asked for a specific molding configuration like in our primary house. We sent him close-up (3" away) pix of the molding we wanted. He agreed. During the ten weeks of the project, he repeatedly assured us that he was almost done. In mid March our neighbor peeked in a window and saw an unfinished floor full of sawdust and tools. There were many times he would not respond to our calls and e-mails. The molding was not installed in the way we requested. To his credit, the floor is beautiful, and the flow between old and new flooring is flawless.

I called four companies for estimates. I found out that this was a "small" job and would take less than one day, so companies would charge a "day rate," which varied from $500 - $600 per day. One company would not come out to give an estimate, just told me what it would cost over the phone. A second company came out and gave an estimate on the spot (about $500). Both of these companies said they would staple down the planks (even though my research had indicated that 5" planks should be glued down). Unique Hardwood was the last company to come out. Chaz, the owner, gave me the estimate. He arrived on time and was polite and professional. When asked about installation, he said he would NOT staple down the floor because gluing would give a more stable and longer lasting floor. He measured everything and left, and said we would receive an estimate by e-mail within a day; the estimate actually arrived in less than two hours. Because this was a "small" job, Chaz was able to fit us in quickly, and we arranged to have the floor installed the following Monday. On Monday morning, one of the installers called and said they would not be able to install the floor that day. (This was the one "glitch" in the whole process.) I told them to come the following day, and they did. Two installers showed up Tuesday morning (
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and a helper). Both were polite and professional. They installed the underlayment and floor with a minimum of mess (I say that because it had snowed recently and it was raining the day of the installation --- everything outside was a terrible mess). When they left, they cleaned up everything, including the sawdust in the garage.
Some extra comments regarding the installation and workmanship:
1) The estimate for the work was $500 (the "day rate"), but this did not include the cost of the glue. Chaz told me up front that the recommended glue would cost about $175 (his cost), and we shouldn't use anything else. Since we didn't need all the glue (5 gallons) for the floor, he also glued down (and stapled) the underlayment. I could have had the job done cheaper, but I was more than willing to pay a little extra to get a more professional installation.
2) I did all the prep work, including removing the shoe moldings, tearing up the old floor and underlayment, and removing all the nails and staples. I also did all the finishing work after the installation, including installation of the shoe moldings and transition pieces.
In summary, I'm very pleased with Unique Hardwood Floor, and I would certainly use their services in the future.

They did an exceptional job.
We'd started the job with another person, who'd previously refinished our cabinets and asked to do our floors. The first person was clearly out of his element. He used a
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
rental sander that gouged the floors and left a considerable dust residue. We dismissed him midway when it was clear he was over his head.
We then found
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
on Angie's list, picking them because their reviews showed the most experience by far in dealing with damaged floors. They also sand with minimal dust equipment.
We were not disappointed. The floors look absolutely brand new--no evidence whatsoever of the gouges from the first refinisher. The work included two bathrooms, where they hand sanded around the fixtures, and three closets, where they hand sanded around water heaters and air units. They also handled a stepped entrance way and lots of nooks and crannies. Tacking from the original installation exposed by the sanding was individually tamped down into the floor and each one then covered in matching putty. Entry and bathroom areas that had received water damage over the years were restored like new.
We paid an extra $2,000 for the water based sealer. They put a sample of both the water and oil based on a section of sanded floor for us to look at. The oil based yellows over time, giving an amber coloration to the floors. The water based does not, allowing the natural wood color to be maintained. And since there aren't any fumes with water based, you can occupy the house during and immediately after the refinishing, versus vacating and spending 3-4 days after somewhere else for the oil based.

Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, RCF, was contracted to install “Heirloom
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
Hardwood” engineered flooring on 11/26/14. This flooring was selected at the recommendation of RCF’s store manager
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
. He stated that their “Heirloom
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
Hardwood” was “just like” and “comparable” to the
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
product we had originally selected. He further stated that he just installed it in another home and he thought it looked “as good as or better” than the
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
product. The product selected at RCF and listed on the invoice was Heirloom
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
Hardwood which is a hickory handscraped engineered hardwood. But the product installed in the home was labeled “French Quarter Hickory” and “
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
”, made in China with no manufacturer name. No label reflected the name Heirloom
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
Hardwood. The flooring was laid between the 12/5/14 and 12/15/14 period. The flooring was left unprotected after the installation while RCF completed tile removal and replacement in three additional areas within the home. The floors were left covered in dust, grout and broken pieces of tile as no care was taken to protect the hardwoods at all. The floors were so dirty that we had to delay our move into the home for a week while RCF tried to clean them. RCF used a number of products to clean the floor and were finally able to get the floors clean enough to allow us to evaluate the work. On that inspection it was noticed that two boards in the living room and one in the hall had the entire thickness of hardwood chipped off of the sides revealing the underlying plywood. These were found despite the installers attempt to cover them with a dark marker/stain pen. These areas were never disclosed and it was quite clear that rather than to stop and get answers on what was happening the installers tried to cover up the problem. RCF was immediately contacted and payment was held until these areas were replaced. During this time we raised the question of why this happened in multiple places before anyone was even in the home. Our questions were never answered despite the boards being replaced quickly in early January. In a matter of days after final payment was made splintering and delamination of flooring began occurring in numerous areas. It was so bad that sock feet would cause a delamination and consequent
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
to the foot. During this time we used the recommended
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
products to care for the flooring, but quickly stopped as the mop would not move across the floor without catching the edges causing more splintering. RCF was notified immediately about the continued deterioration of the floor and updated regularly as demands for answers were not met. RCF was again contacted when on January 18, 2015 when my 2 year old grandson cut his finger on the flooring in the kitchen area. We were copied on few e-mails between RCF and their distributor Stonewood Floors but continued to wait on any solid information. We had also contracted with RCF to installed stacked stone around the faces of two see through fireplaces. RCF personnel again did not protect the flooring while doing this work and the mess was unacceptable. The work on the stacked stone was also unacceptable as butt joints were used on the corners instead of pre-made corner pieces being used. I was told on several occasions that pre-made corner pieces were not made for the stone but when I challenged this with store manager
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, he called the distributor and pre-made coroners were available - and in stock right across the street from the store. RCF's work was unacceptable. They did not have a plan and the work was beyond their capabilities. It was removed from their scope of work in December and they were instructed to stop all work on the fireplaces. But they continued to work on them and sprayed stone enhancer on the work against my instructions. All of this work was removed from the home in late December but stone enhancer was on the hardwood flooring. It was cleaned using mineral spirits on January 2, 2015. A formal complaint as specified in the Stonewood Floors 50 Year Warranty was filed with RCF on January 20, 2015. In that complaint I made it clear that I wanted a permanent solution to the splintering and delamination issues (the issue) and that time was of the essence. On January 30, 2015 Mr.
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, President of RCF, filed the complaint forms with photos with Stonewood Floors, the flooring material supplier. Stonewood Floor’s
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, the flooring material supplier’s Technical Director, initial response to the complaint, which was forwarded to me on February 3, 2015, was to “use markers and putty” to repair the damaged flooring which was a totally unacceptable response to my complaint. I then had to clarify on February 3, 2015 my expectations and communicated that a full replacement of all engineered hardwood in the home was required and all costs incurred and associated with that replacement were to be
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
by RCF or Stonewood Floors or both. Questions on why the flooring was splintering directed to T.
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
and
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
provided no answers as to the cause of the issue. We also demanded a timeline for a resolution before further actions were taken on our part. On February 5, an RCF employee came to the home to pick up samples of the flooring to send to Stonewood Floors that were left as spares (open boxes) and observed the splintering and delamination on the engineered hardwoods. His statement to me was that “they should give us a new floor”. I obtained an independent assessment from another flooring company owner on February 8 and his opinion was that the flooring materials contained manufacturing defects and should be replaced. The symptoms of splintering and delamination would only get worse with time. Stonewood Floors finally contracted with a NWFA certified flooring inspector, Mr.
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, to render an opinion on the flooring and that inspection was completed on February 9, 2015. However, the delivery of the inspector’s report was delayed and a list of different excuses was supplied by RCF and Stonewood Floors including non-payment to the inspector, computer issues, etc. In a call to RCF’s President
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
on 2/24/2015 I clearly and succinctly outlined my expectation that a firm plan be in place to resolve these issues no later than 2/27/2015. This communication to Mr.
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
set off a series of unprofessional emails containing profanity from Mr.
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
directed towards me and my family and stating that we were “threating him” by demanding a plan by a certain time or moving forward with other mediation measures. Aside from the profanity the most insulting aspect was being told we were “unrealistic” because we wanted a final plan to our problem after months of trouble. Mr.
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
also referred us to his attorney in Mountain Home, AR and denied any responsibility through the “warranty” clause in the contract. This is despite the fact that the product was falsely represented and his installers knew early on in the installation that a problem with the flooring existed, but made the choice to cover it up rather than address it. The inspectors report was received by me on March 3. Not surprisingly the inspector's opinion was that Stonewood Floors was not responsible for the issues since the affected flooring was less than 5% of the total which is the "industry norm". The findings indicated three manufacturing defects, several installation errors and then went on to say that the homeowners had metal tips on their furniture and that was causing some of the damage. There is nothing in Stonewood Floors' or RCF's documents that we have received regarding the requirement to not use the metal tips that originally came on the furniture we own. There has also been no further contact with RCF on their plans to address the issues since February 24, 2015.

The lack of accountability and responsibility for the materials installed plus the delays and excuses compounded by the behavior of Mr.
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
of RCF are inexcusable. It is clear to me that I cannot have RCF back in the home given the hostility shown towards me and my family members by Mr.
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, the President of
Bluffton Wood Flooring Experts Provider Name Locked
, and their the clear lack of integrity as a flooring retailer and distributor.

's crew showed up on time and went right to work. They moved all the furniture and sanded the floors on day 1. Day 2 was stain and 1st coat of top coat, and the last day they finished the top coats and by Thursday--they had the furniture moved back (perfectly-I might add) and they were done! Very great work, the dust was contained, and we are so happy with the outcome!

From the moment we walked in their store, the salesperson remembered us from last year. He showed us carpet samples and advised us on choice of pad. Heibat came out to measure and gave us the estimate promptly. Their estimate was considerably lower in price than another company for the exact same product--Mohawk carpet, upgraded pad and baseboards. The installers arrived on time, were courteous, and did a wonderful job. We love our new carpet and baseboards.
