"I was painting with oil inside of my house, while my wife started some laundry. I took a break to catch some fresh air, and I smelled a strong odor of natural gas," or butane. I was baffled as to what it was since we weren't doing anything that I thought would have caused this problem. I went down stairs and the odor got stronger and I narrowed it down to the fact that the dryer smelled awfully similar to gas and I immediately shut it off. At first I thought it was the motor burning out, and I was getting worried. We tried to run the dryer again and it got worse. I freaked out because I thought for sure this meant we had to buy a new dryer. I called
, after hours, and
answered the phone and answered my questions politely and with precision. He told me that the chemicals of the paint actually reacted in a way that the dryer was giving off that sense of smell, and that it wasn't an immediate problem. I was completely baffled because I am a local painting contractor and I have NEVER had this problem!! I couldn't believe what I was hearing, and he put my mind at ease. He told me to run the dryer on "no heat" for 30 minutes and the problem should be remedied...as it was! I couldn't have asked for a better experience with this guy, and I am definitely going to be using his services (shall I required them), and I will definitely be referring him to my customers and my family in the future if need be. Super impressed, and the fact that he is a Angie's List member like I am, and he handled the situation with confidence, only makes it better. Thanks again!

"Initially the
refrigerator was not maintaining temperature properly. It would only cool down into the low 40s while the freezer worked fine." Called
and set up a one year repair/maintenance agreement and arranged for them to come fix it. One week later the repair man arrives on schedule, determines that a fan is not working, orders a replacement part, and reschedules for a followup appointment to install the new assembly. Up to now everything seems good. The replacement part does not arrive in time for the second appointment. As soon as we get an expected receiving date from UPS we call back to reschedule the installation. Soonest they can get someone to come out is two weeks later! Remember, this is after they could not get their part to us in time for the appointment they set up. OK, the fridge is mostly working, just not maintaining proper temperature. Second appointment occurs, (different) repairman is surprised to find he is replacing whole assembly because of a bad fan but installs it anyways. After he leaves I put the food back into the fridge along with a thermometer. The temperature is in the mid 50s but does not seem to go down. I think that maybe it will just take a few hours before the temperature can recover. Nope! Next morning the temperature is in the mid 60s - barely below room temp. To make matters worse, what was a correctly working freezer is now defrosted! As far as I can tell the fridge is not cooling at all, it is just acting as an insulated ice chest and the only reason the temperature is below room temp is because the food was cold when we put in back in. Call
Repair expecting them to send a repairman out within a day or two since they are the ones who turned a working fridge and freezer into an insulated box. No - the soonest they can get someone out is two weeks! My expectation at this point is that in two weeks a new repairman will come out, determine that some different part will be needed, order the new part and set up a new appointment for two weeks later. When the new part (again) does not arrive on time I will probably have to reschedule the appointment yet another two weeks later. Repeat. I should have gone with the repairman that we have used for other appliance repairs around the house. We thought that getting the
Protection Agreement would be better and safer. We were WRONG! It is completely unacceptable that they do not have enough repairmen to provide reasonable turnaround times. It is completely unacceptable that after they botch a repair that they still can not get anyone back in less than two weeks.

If the ducts are venting through a window I'm assuming the duct work is all easily accessible.  Lowe's and Home Depot sell a cleaning kit that uses an electric drill to spin the brush as it goes through the ductwork.  I've found it to work quite well and you can do it yourself.  It may take a few passes the first time to get everything out if it has been a while since it was last cleaned.  Just make sure you get all of the loose lint out after running the brush through from both ends and you're good to go.  Please note that if the line is not hard but rather a flex duct line you can easily puncture a whole in it with this kit and will do better to clean it by hand.

I have never seen one of this type that does not exit the house. You would not want the grease dumping into your basement, even with a filter it will happen.

     The greater part of your job will be carpentry as if there is a wall behind the stove a hole will have to be cut up through the basement into the wall up to the stove. Unless it is one of the stoves that allows for it to fit inside a cabinet below. To answer correctly most here would be a picture of where this project is being done. I have done motorized ones that extend up out of the counter when in use and then retract. Those exit through the cabinet and require the cook top is to the front of the counter and not a drop in one

     As an added note these tend to be better as they do not pull the heat away from the stove top when in use as much as the ones flush with the stove. I have install quite a few and happen to have an Amana cook top with built in down draft and I have to shut it of to get water to boil on the back burners.

     A carpenter will know what can be cut and what not in the basement, a sheet metal contractor should know as well but at the other end for the finish by the stove they might not. Most carpenters that do kitchens have installed the minimal amount of duct work for this. They just have to be carefull with the number of ellbows and the lenght of the duct.

He worked quickly to diagnose the problem and kept me advised as to what he was doing, looking for, etc. It just so happened that the particular pump needed for my dishwasher wasn't on him that day, but he was able to obtain one by later in the day. He scheduled a follow-up visit to come back to install the new drain pump, which was scheduled for the following day.
Next day, the same professional showed up to install the drain pump. He was diligent in removing the dishwasher and keeping the work area clean. He cleared the line and installed the pump. After putting everything back together and in its place, he offered advice as to how best to keep the line clear. All is back to normal and I look forward to working with this company again in the future should one of my appliances need servicing. I also have a couple of business cards from

The service technician was prompt. After "diagnostics", he clearly outlined what he thought the problem might be and the steps he would take in repair. Unfortunately he did have to wait about a week and a half for a part, but came out promptly upon its arrival. It didn't do the trick however and further part replacement would have lead us close to if not over the cost of the machine. I did as the technician advised. I called KitchenAid who then referred me to an authorized parts and repair store in California. They did have the part. I called our technician to verify that this part was exactly what we needed, since it would be non-returnable. He verified that it was, said to order the part, and to call

The appointment scheduler, after I told her the situation and asked to have the technician come back out, notified me that they could not install it. I told her that I had spoken with their technician and that he said under this circumstance they could install it but would not warranty it. She then put me on hold to speak with the supervisor. Per the supervisor, they will not come out and install the part since it was not ordered directly from the manufacturer - even though it was ordered from a place that KitchenAid directed me to and even though their employee told me in 2 different conversations that he could do it. No alternative solutions were offered to me. More importantly no apologies were given. Now lets hope I can find someone else to install this expensive part that I cannot return that an
