(JWI) replaced our roof in August 2014 due to hail damage, and we were very pleased with the project from start to finish.

made sure the roof project would be done right, which meant going back to our insurance company and renegotiating for things that our insurance adjuster didn’t initially cover. §
inspected our attic and noticed problems with our soffit vents and ventilation. Our builder had not installed enough vents and hadn’t cut out the soffits correctly in many cases. They corrected the soffit problems and installed a ridge vent system in place of the majority of the old turtle vents. This should help improve our attic ventilation. They also found and blocked a spot where birds were nesting inside the

is a general contractor in addition to being a roofing company. They did most of the work with their own crew; however, they did sub out replacing our copper bay window cover and that project was completed in a timely manner. JWI was available to do other repairs, such as painting, and repairs to our fence and arbor, but we chose to wait on most of that work.. § They replaced everything down to the roof decking, including the felt/tarpaper. Many roofing contractors like to reuse the old tarpaper instead of replacing it to save money. When
removed the old tarpaper they were able to pinpoint the source of a persistent leak that had been plaguing us for years. They replaced rotted decking and put rolled metal roofing as well as ice and water shield in the valley to prevent the problem from recurring. § The crew was friendly, easy to talk to, and kept the work site very clean. After completion, they cleaned up well, using a magnetic device. We found surprisingly few nails subsequent to their final cleanup. § We did purchase a few upgrades that we thought were well worth the cost.
was great at explaining various options and upgrades that were available, but he was never pushy. We appreciated his honest approach and dedication to ensuring quality work. § Communications were A+.
kept us informed at every step. If we sent an email or left a voice mail message,
responded back to us immediately. § Many of our neighbors that used other roofing companies waited for months to get their roof done. JWI worked around our summer vacation schedule and got things done in a very timely manner once we gave them the go-ahead. Overall, we are very pleased with the quality of workmanship and the customer service we received from

"They were great from start to finish. I called 5 companies for an estimate and they were 2000.00 less than the others.
came a couple days" after I called him. He came prepared to give me a written estimate right then. The other companies mailed me theirs days/weeks later. He also brought samples so I picked the color right away. He scheduled me for 2 weeks. I wanted a lifetime, transferrable warranty and a 10 year warranty on labor, and that's what I got. They gave me a new vent system as I didn't have one before (we don't know why). I got an entire roof ice/water shield where I only had 3 feet before. They also replaced a portion of a rotten fascia, which I thought I'd have to get a carpenter for. All three things I got for no extra charge, because, he said, he wanted to do it right. They cleaned up afterwards, and were done in one day. They are very nice, knowledgeable and professional. I would recommend them to anyone and will call them myself for future remodeling.

Wow, i aum surprised you didn't get 10 answers already with roofers say X was the best or N was the best or A was the best. In reality you are focusing on the WRONG THING!

5 estimates? Why 5? Why would you do that to yourself? Normally if you are dealing with reputable companies you don't need more than 2 estimates. I advocate to people to always get at least two estimates and if the roofers are saying something very different or if the roofers are way way way off in price, get an equalizer, get a 3rd.  Obviously if you don't trust a roofer disqualify that roofer immediately.  I beliee you have now fallen into "Analysis Paralysis" which is what happens when you have too many opions.

But back to the topic, I said you are focusing on the wrong thing. Why did I say that? Because you can take the best shingle in the world and if installed wrong is compeltely garbage. i can take the worst shingle, known to fail, and if installed properly will last some ammount of time. So you should focus on the roofer, not the product. The roofer is more important and a good quality roofer will only want to install good quality product.

The roof is a system comprised of many components, not just the shingles. You have the water proofing underlayment such as ice shield, the water resistant underlayments such as felt. You have the shingles, the ventilation and the flashing details. All of these things add up to equal one roof. Neglect one and your roof is doomed to fail.

But the roof is more than just product it is detail, know how and heart. Heart? yes heart. It takes the utmost CARING the utmost DESIRE to want to install a good roof. It's hard work and easy to fall into the train of thought as to do what's easier, instead of what's faster.  Faster and easier seldom ever equals better. At the end of the day you ened a roofer that cares about your roof.

So what product is best? That's hard to say. Each manufacturer has multiple plants and it seems each plant puts out varying levels of quality. I will tell you in my area Atlast is known as a cheap commodity shingle. I have Tamko Heritage on my house but I stopped using it because I was having seal failue issues and at the time they offered no contractor certification program, but I hear they started up one. Ownes corning is a decent product backed by a great company. I don't install very many OC's though. I primarily install CertainTeed Landmark shingles and my feeling is that they are the best on the market in my area. I'm sure others will disagree with me.

But don't miss the point, the roofer is more important than the shingle.
?
I appreciate the fact that with homeowners like you who want to beat the insurance co out of deductibles, so then my rates and every other homeowners rates can also go up just to save you.....Thanks for NOTHING..[8o|]
?

Any roofer worth using should be able to do the roof with NO MONEY DOWN.

The only scenario I would ask for a deposit is on a crazy odd ball shingle that had to be special ordered.

?
The question was, Can it be done? The answer is yes. The real question is "Should" it be done? The answer is, no, not unless it is an emergency.   But also let's clarify winter, because we are having a pretty mild winter, so there's kinda not a problem this year so far. I'll refrence "below freezing" from this point forward.

As a certified and licensed roofing contractor, my reputation is on the line. I debate this topic quite often with other roofing contractors who seem to care more about profit than a job well done.  Well, I can tell you from past experience having been a professional roofer for 14 years as of the time of this posting, that the chance for failure increases exponentionally when installed below freezing.  It's better just not to risk it.

Personally I will not, unless absolutely necessary and the customer signs a disclaimer of limited liability, install a roof below freezing and really really want to install the roof at 40 or above. The shingles need to seal, and will not seal unless they warm to about 70 degrees F ambient temprature. This does not mean it needs to be 70 outside, because the shingles will warm from the sun.

So what can be done to install the roof below freezing? Well first, the roof should not be gun nailed below freezing. This is because the shingles become brittle and it's easier to "blow through" with your nails. It's also harder to regulate air pressure when it is cold, I speculate because of barometric pressures, but I am just guessing.  Therefore the roof should be hand nailed. This takes more time. Furthermore since the seal strips will not seal, they must be manually sealed with proper compatible adhesives. This will also take more time, and more material. I once spoke with a roofer in Alaska who builds tents around the houses he is working on and covers them with tarps and heats with propane heaters.  Now that takes real time!    The question is, are you prepared to pay for this extra time? Can you wait a few more weeks?

During the last rain we discovered we needed a new roof when we noticed there was a waterfall in our kitchen.
One of the company's we contracted was

. and they came out immediately. Their bid was extremely fair so we hired them on the spot and are we glad we did. It was a three day job. The workers were there early each morning and worked the whole day.
Having the roof leak had caused some other problems. Turns out we had some wood rot in several areas. At first I thought I can't handle another problem. Well I didn't have to.
Grand Valley Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked

It was a very professional group of men. From the office staff to the workers they answered every question we had. When they finished the project there was no sign of them being here. The cleanup was incredible. They even had a large magnet that they went over the yard with to be sure all old nails were picked up.

Grand Valley Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
was the fifth roofing contrctor that I interviewed.
Grand Valley Roofing Contractors Provider Name Locked
came over and walked on the roof and carefully noted all of the issues with it. None of the other contractors went on the roof. He was very patient with all my stupid questions, answering them so that I could understand what he was going to do. He also amended the contract several times to my advantage and to ease my concerns. His men came out on a Saturday and did half of the roof (it rained). They also replaced the flat roof over my back porch, and the slanted roof over my front porch. They finished the job the next day. Three days later, they came out and put the new gutters on (subcontractor). All in all professional job with a friendly group of workers, especially

Marcial met with my husband for the estimate. He was very pleasant and knowledgeable. The men arrived at about 8:00 am and worked until after 6:00 pm. They had to replace all of the wood panels on the house and some of the wood on the garage. They also had to replace the furnace pipe and enclose it and vent the kitchen and bath exhausts. They had the work done in 2 days with just a few finishing things that were done on the third day. We are pleased with the entire process. They were done fast and did a wonderful job.

I waited twice on this company to provide an estimate for a new roof, gutters, & some siding repairs. He never showed up the first time & instead texted me 3 hours later saying he got behind for the day. Although I found it rude, I replied that it was no problem. I then received no reply. Instead, had to contact him again 1 week later to reschedule. At first he couldn't recall that he had ever scheduled an estimate & when he finally remembered, he said, "Oh yeah. I just got real busy." He apologized & said he would be by that day & that I didn't need to be there for the estimate- he said he would, "Leave it in your mailbox." I said I would to be there if I could & he said he would call when he was on his way. Guess what- that was 2 days ago. I called again today to follow-up & see if he came to take a look & maybe just didn't leave a copy of the estimate. His answer, "oh yeah I just got real busy." Apparently this company is "really busy" on other people's houses & they don't need the business. His loss- now someone else gets to put on my roof & gutters. Maybe they'll appreciate the business & won't think that their time is more important than mine!Terribly unprofessional! All of the "A" reviews must be written by personal friends/aquaintances whom this company did work for. I would NEVER give them my business!
