The packers arrived on time (a few minutes early) and packed almost everything on Sunday by 2 pm but had to stop then because they ran out of packing materials. They asked if I would mind if they came early on Tuesday and pack the last hour or so our stuff. I said fine with me and again they came on time and packed/loaded everything carefully and efficiently on Tuesday.
At out new farm house they did an incredible job unloading under some difficult circumstances: It poured rain all day and night, it was extremely cold and very windy. Our headboard didn't fit up our curved staircase so they had to take it apart and reassemble it. They worked a long day without a lunch break and basically had a trying day all around.
All of our belongings made it to our new house without any breakage or scratches. They were very careful even though they had a long, hungry, wet, cold day. It took them until about 10:30 PM to unload everything and the entire time all the men had smiles on their faces and were happy and joking around with us.
I LOVE Shiveley's, that i why I always call them when I have to move. I don't know why I ever called the "other" movers this time since they stood us up and in the end Shiveley's cost was less than the other guys quote and their service was top notch as always.
I waited and waited for an estimate, after a week I called the main office in
Finally on the 19th of the month I sent an email to my agent and made it clear that if I don't hear from him that day I would be looking elsewhere for moving services. Instantly I received a response stating that they can't (or wouldn't ??) move me. Their reason being was that they were to busy, yes but I should have been one of those people on the list making them busy. After all I did call a month in advance and was told it was not a problem. I asked when they could move me and was told it would be maybe sometime after December 18th, maybe.
I went from both of the agents visiting my home telling me that it would be no problem to move me out by the end of the month (November) to maybe after December 18th.
I was stuck with a lease that expired the end of the month and it was already the 19th and I had no movers. Luckily a local company stepped up and squeezed me in.
I should have read the other review more closely, because this company are not professional movers. They are college kids who move things, which for us is a huge difference. It is like hiring a few of your friends to come over and help and not employees that have extensive experience with moving. To be fair, we are very anal about our things and our recently remodeled home. But we have done 3 long distance moves in 4 years, so I can make a fair assessment of movers. They didn't have any tools and didn't know how to take any furniture apart.
We needed them to move dressers upstairs and on the first piece they tried to carry up they gouged our newly installed hardwood floor and came close to ruining our new staircase. They knew they did it, and never apologized. Once I realized that they were inexperienced, I felt like I had to watch them very carefully. They still banged up a few other pieces of furniture, again never apologized and even seemed annoyed by us telling them to be more careful. I have never had a mover have such blatant disregard for my belongings. Usually they are smart enough to at least be more careful when I am standing right there! Also, they were not very personable, although they probably hated us because we must have said to be more careful at least a 100 times . We had them move the pieces that my husband and I knew we couldn't carry on our own. Even though it was only an hour into the 2 hour minimum, we told them we didn't need them any more. We didn't want to risk more damage to our house that we just spent months and thousands of dollars remodeling.
I just don't think they cared as much, compared to professional movers since this is not their full time job. Maybe when I was in my twenties and moving between apartments they might have been fine. But I would not recommend them if you have any interest in keeping your belongings or home intact.
Update due to the company's response: The response from the company was not an accurate depiction of the situation. I specifically remember telling him that it was bedroom furniture that needed to go up the stairs (which I think implies a dresser). Also, I remember telling him about one very heavy piece that we have for the master bedroom. This didn't go up the stairs and only needed to be moved 25 feet. Regarding this piece he told me as long as my husband was home in case they needed extra help 2 people were sufficient. The dresser that did go up the stairs was not 350 pounds. It isn't expensive furniture and the drawers were out of it so there is no way it was that heavy, just a dresser that is a long awkward piece of furniture. My husband and I have moved it multiple times by ourselves, but I couldn't move it this time because I was pregnant. It wasn't swiveled over a railing. From the response, it sounds that the person I made the arrangements with was actually here moving the furniture, which was not the case. I was the only one both making the arrangements and here the day of the move. Additionally, I wrote the original review shortly after the move, so the details were fresh in my mind compared to several months later by a person not here. Given the unprofessional response from the company you can gage the maturity of the company for yourself.”
They use a rented truck which was fine, suggested that I obtain a permit to block parking in front of our rowhome which I would not have known I could do. They were quite prompt.
My only real criticsm would be that my offer to come over and look at what we needed to move. He asked for a synopsis over the phone and estimated about 4-5 hrs. While I listed off the biggest furniture items, it would have been better if he'd looked for himself. Instead of 4-5 hrs the men worked from 8:30am to 6:30pm with only a short break for lunch. It was a very hot day and we did help them as well. They ended up making 3 trips back and forth (thankfully we were only 15min from our old home).
There were things that we'd hoped would have been moved that didn't get moved but by 10hrs of extremely hard work, we decided that the men had had enough for one day and we'd just have to deal with the rest later.
All of our items were treated with as much respect as we were and I would definitely recommend them overall.”
