Best Miami Contractors of 2011

Samada Fence | Hialeah, Fla.

Sergio M. Samada says his family started over with nothing in 1996 after moving to Hialeah from Cuba, where his late grandfather had been imprisoned for his opposition to Fidel Castro.

As a teen, Samada installed fences on weekends alongside his father. The family gained citizenship and started Samada Fence in 2004. The company, which garnered 10 Page of Happiness nominations in the last year, has built a reputation for going the extra mile.

"Personal attention makes the difference," says Samada, who holds a general contractor's license.

"At every turn, [Samada] was a gentleman," says Niki Jareo of Pembroke Pines, who had vinyl fence installed along the length of her home. "He was accommodating, he made suggestions; he got her done."

He also took an interest in her show dogs, Belgian Malinois named Meesha and Neeko. "He patiently watched while I showed him what they could do," she says.

Member Alana Cohen of Cooper City hired Samada Fence to patch a hole in a chain-link fence. "I finally found a company that does what they say they are going to do and more," she says.

Best Refrigerator Repair | South Miami, Fla.

In an era where job-hopping has become commonplace, Nelson Munoz is a throwback. The 59-year-old appliance repairman spent 37 years working for Sears before retiring and starting Best Refrigerator Repair in 2007.

"I've been doing this since I was 19 years old," says Munoz, who isn't required to be licensed to do residential appliance repair. A natural-born problem solver, he first became interested in mechanics while watching his father fix cars.

But instead of lifting hoods, he began opening appliance doors - and Angie's List members say his years of experience show.

"He knows what he's doing; he doesn't B.S. you," says Delia Garcia of Coral Gables. She called Munoz to fix an icemaker and a water dispenser on the fritz.

"Nelson diagnosed [the problem] where others had failed," she says. He ordered a new computer panel and followed up multiple times to install the panel and troubleshoot other issues with the icemaker, but never charged a cent over the original bill. "This man is tops," Garcia says.

Members say he's prompt, which is a virtue in high demand when food threatens to spoil. Irma Duran of Miami called Munoz when her refrigerator stopped cooling. He scheduled service for the next day, showed up on time and got to work rooting out a faulty motor part. "He was able to replace it and fix our problem immediately," Duran says.

"People can be without a washer for a few days but when it comes to a refrigerator, they always need it right away," says Munoz, who values speed as much as his customers do. So he makes refrigerator emergencies a priority.

"I called Nelson about my refrigerator, which was frozen up and making very loud noises as if possessed," says Miami member Ann Bornstein. Munoz promptly determined the fix, and put her at ease. "He makes you feel comfortable immediately," Bornstein says. "He far exceeded my expectations."

All Rescreening | Sunrise, Fla.

Marc Morganstine of Weston says All Rescreening removed a screen frame abutting his roof after work hours on the Friday before Labor Day so roofers could quickly fix a leak. "They made time on their time off," Morganstine says. "I was very impressed."

Owner Walter MacKinlay, a four-time Super Service Award winner, says he doesn't cut corners and shoots straight with customers. "I think honesty is probably the key," says MacKinlay, whose work doesn't require a license.

"Walter is obviously a [skilled] craftsman," says Coral Springs member Irene Adjan, who hired him to repair a screen enclosure threatening to fall into her pool. Besides replacing more than half the screen, he reinforced the frame at no charge. "I couldn't ask for any more," Adjan says.

A-Max Air Conditioning | Miami

Member Andy Ransford of Coral Gables knew he'd made the right choice hiring A-Max Air Conditioning from the moment owner Dustin Petty arrived. "He was just really attentive," Ransford says. "He noticed the sign on our doorbell that said, 'Do not ring, baby sleeping,' so he knocked real quietly."

The service A-Max delivered while repairing a leaking air conditioner refrigerant line and providing maintenance was prompt, thorough and transparent. "There's a reason why he has a straight-A record," Ransford says.

Petty, a licensed contractor, installs mostly Energy Star-certified, high efficiency units, and employs six full-time workers. "We're trying to give people the best - like what we'd do for our own families," says Petty, a three-time Super Service Award winner.
