"Backed Up Sewer: Emergency response is fantastic. You don't want to have to call them, but when you do you are glad that they were who you called. don't" call anyone else unless they tell you they can't get to your problem. Had all the equipment to rooter, jet and camera the lines to see what was going on. They video recorded the camera inspection and left that with us for future reference. In freezing temperatures they installed a parking lot drain /
drain and replaced a section of sidewalk they had to remove. The permitting for the project with the city was exhausting, but once we got the green light they skillfully executed every aspect of the work. This was a huge undertaking and we had to reduce our business as our parking lot was offline during part of this project. They got the work done in the time they said it would take, and we were back up and running exactly on schedule. We hired Action to replace our sewer line several years later at our residence (when we could budget it) and it was refreshing to see so many guys work so hard, and so smart.
and crew coordinated multiple trucks to open up the city line, excavate and install a drain and sump pump, and tied that whole system in to a future perimeter interior basement drain. They worked expeditiously and kept the work area as clean as possible and cleaned up the work site each day. Multiple trucks, various pieces of equipment and the skilled operators for each part of the project were something to see. The crews start early, take few breaks and work as a team to keep everything moving.. no standing around leaning on a shovel or sitting on a trencher watching the other guys work. They did an amazing job at coordinating all of the elements of this project with precision and no down time. A few days after the sewer line we had them replace our water supply line while the city had our sidewalk out for replacement. Another crew arrived exactly at the scheduled time with the proper equipment and bored from the street to our foundation to bring a new water supply line in to the house. It is clear that they know what they are doing, and have the right equipment and technical skills to swiftly accomplish what they are contracted to do. We have more projects in the que and are confident that they will do the same high quality work as we have experienced on every other project. While some of this work is expensive, it is competitive and executed so well that it takes some of the sting out of the expense for something that is burried under the ground, and something that you hope you don't have to think about again for a loooooong time... but if you do - call
and his crews.

"It ended up that my sewer pipe was broke and I also had a clog. They did refund $100 of the $250 since we thought it was a broken sewer pipe. I later found out I" had two things - a clog at 26 feet and a broken pipe and 51 feet. I had two hire two different companies - one to fix the pipe and one to unclog at 26 feet. It is too bad I can't get all of my money back since they couldn't take care of the clog. I wouldn't go with them again as I found two really good companies that were able to get me a resolution.

It's a good idea to get to know a good plumber before you have a plumbing emergency. Also, watch out for these red flags of possible plumbing-related scams.

From the sounds of it, you have a clog between the floor drain and the connection to the city sewer (unless you have a septic tank).  The lower flow rates of sinks / showers / dishwashers probable don't cause a backup like the washing machine does.  A couple of suggestions.

1.  Snake the drain line with a spade tip snake, twisting the snake as you advance it.  This should clear the partial blockage.

 2.  If feasable, have your washing machine discharge into a utility sink and put a strainer on the drain to catch the clothing fibre (fibres and grease from the sink probably made the clog in the first place not to mention a garbage disposal).

3.  Replace your floor drain with one that has a backflow preventer (looks like there is a ping pong ball in it).

 Good Luck

It is not uncommon for a plumber to have to go get the parts necessary to repair and complete the job.  It is very hard to determine what the problem is over the phone and it is not until the repair process begins that the parts needed to resolve the problem is discovered.  It may also depend on if the plumber is using hourly rates or per job rates.  I would hope the time to get the parts would be minimal and the charge would be as well!

FYI: CPVC and PEX are two different materials and installed differently.  PEX is not intended to be glued but instead has special crimp fittings.  PEX is a brand name of one product that is manufactured slightly differently by others as well so it is important that the same brand fittings are used to match the pipe material.

Mobile homes used CPVC for years and some still do.  It works fine but is not as strong as a properly soldered copper pipe system.  Is the contractor installing this new plumbing a licensed plumber?  I'd be surprised if he is since he's using CPVC and not PEX (or similar) or copper.  PEX pipe is even cheaper than CPVC when run by a knowledgable plumber.  It doesn't require nearly as many joints since it comes in rolls and can flex through spaces easily.

There are some groups raising a fuss about BPA and other chemicals found in plastics that don't like the use of CPVC, PVC, or PEX pipe.  I haven't seen the results of any lab tests to confirm or dispute their concerns.  As far as durability goes it's fairly safe as long as it's properly installed and secured.  It is not as susceptible to hard water damage as copper.  It absolutely must be insulated along it's entire length to protect it from contact to other materials as well as freezing.  Also, the fixtures in the house need to be grounded electrically since the pipe itself provides no electrical protection against accidental shock or electrocution.  In a copper plumbed house the system is grounded so static electricity, a short in a wire near a water line, or lightning strike will carry the current out through the pipe instead of through the water to you, ideally.

If it's installed correctly you should be fine but make sure the contractor knows what he is doing and follows the proper procedures to use CPVC pipe.

It is usually cheaper to remove part of the ceiling below and patch it after the leak has been repaired.  Remember that water can travel before settling in one area, causing the spot you've seen.  Just because it is below the toilet does not mean that the toilet is the problem.  The cheapest option is to pull the toilet and check the floor around the wax ring to see if it has been leaking.  A new wax ring only costs a few dollars.  When was the last time you caulked the shower in that bathroom?  The water can leak around the corners or at the door (if you have one) and travel along the floor joists until it pools in a lower spot on the ceiling below, then seep through.  It could also be a seal at the drain of the tub or shower.

I get a few calls a year for this sort of thing.  It's usually something simple but can be a nightmare to diagnose, especially if the problem is intermittent.  Start with the simple possibilities and use deductive reasoning to narrow the possibilities.  Before you do a lot of damage it may pay off to hire a reputable contractor to help you make sure you've exhausted all of the imple and more obvious possibilities.

The simple answer is ,"No!" The only way to effectively clean grease and scum from a drain line (or a neighborhood, jk) is with high pressured water. The machine they use is called a Jetter, many drain cleaning companies have them.

Do you know the age of the existing valve?  Are you sure the existing valve is a ball valve and not a gate valve?  Gate valves notoriously fail after prolonged periods of being either open or shut.  The rubber washer breaks down or gets mineral build up on it and then it won't shut off.  Whether the valve is bad or not it's a lot cheaper to replace it while he's got the area dug up and working on those connections than having him return to dig it up and pull it all back apart again due to a leaking valve.  The valve will run around $20 and the pipe isn't much either (price depends on the type of pipe).  Labor is an few minutes so he likely isn't charging you any more in labor costs to put the new valve in than he would to do the rest of the work anyway.

Like Vern said, he has a minimum amount he has to charge to cover his costs and still make money.  Being a contractor of any sort is not cheap with all of the government regulation, higher fuel costs, tool costs, etc.  It probably costs him at least $200 a day just to be in business if he's a self employed independent.  More for someone with a shop and answering service, etc.  Most plumbers around here are going to charge at least $100/hour with a minimum charge.  It'll probably take him 2-3 hours to install everything so he's really not out of line.  You might be able to find someone a little cheaper but check their reputations.

I feel like a fool. I've only had one other experience with a clogged drain to go by - it took a long time.

I called

this morning at just after 9am and explained my problem. They arrived about 10:15, explained the procedure, worked around my logistical quirks, and were cleaned up, packed up, and out the door by 11:00.
While I wasn't thrilled with spending unanticipated money on a plumber this month, if I had to do it again, I'll definitely call them first!

This did not go as well as we anticipated. They came on a very cold day. The access was on the outside. The tech that was working that day, (who no longer works for the company), informed us we needed a pipe replaced - he did not use the camera. Another company looked it over and determined it was not damaged. The owner graciously refunded the money we paid. Initially because of the tech I wanted to give this company bad grades, but their graciousness in working with us - the grades given are based on their working with us. They are taking responsibility for the tech and his service.
I would use them again with the assurance the owner would be making sure all went well in the future.

Main drainage line of rambler style house built in the 1950's backed up into basement, 3rd time in roughly a month. After discussing what "the other guys" did I requested
Marcola Drain Plumbers Provider Name Locked
send the camera down the pipe to see exactly what was going on. We found a blockage beyond what a "normal" auger line would reach, apparently our house has a relatively long run to the main city sewer line. He brought in his longer auger and opened up the the main line did some cleaning work at the point in the line that had the blockage. He again sent the camera down to have a look a the pipe and showed clean pipes all the way to the city line! When he pulled his auger back had a large clump of roots, showing definitive proof that his work had done what the other "big guys" couldn't do. A++ for

was exceptional. I had been having a problem with my plumbing backing up for the last 5 years. The plumber I was using before would come out to snake the line about once a year every time the problem occurred but that was not solving my problem. I found

and they were Punctual, Professional, Polite, Proficient, Thorough, Clean, and very Knowledgeable. They found my problem was being caused by a back flow prevent door. Once they jetted the line of excess toilet paper near the back-flow door I haven't had a problem. They also gave me information on preventing future back-ups.

They were very nice, showed up on time, and did the work. It was inexpensive. The tub unclogging went quickly and well. The faucet replacement did not go as well. I discovered after they left that they did not do whatever caulking or puttying needed beneath the faucet to prevent water from leaking into the sink cabinet below when we spill onto the backsplash under/behind the faucet. Also, less than a year later, the sprayer housing has come loose.
To be fair, I should have called them back to fix this problem, and I did not.

The company was very responsive -- I had a large backup causing minor flooding. The company sent a serviceman to my home within 24 hours. The gentleman stayed approx. 3 hours. At first, he had trouble isolating the problem, but eventually was able to get through. A camera was not used, although that was part of the big deal. I learned that my pipe's connection to the town's main sewer lines can get easily blocked. Therefore, I will call this company about every 6 months to come out and make sure all is clear.

This was a difficult blockage in main drain. When running the dishwasher or running water in the sink, waste water would bubble up in the tub drain. This house is a slab ranch in N. Framingham, which means they had to go through the toilet to use their device to clear the blockage. They were prompt and professional, and kept at it until the drain was cleared. In this case it took some time.
I would hire them again, for sure; and recommend them anytime.
