"he owner came to our house and gave us an oral estimate for repointing our brick chimney and brick steps. We should have asked for a written estimate, because we" weren't on the same page regarding what was covered for repointing our front steps. We thought repointing meant replacing all of the mortar/point in the steps, but only a small part of the point was replaced. The original service took place in October. We called to address the problems with the steps and asked them complete the work. We had to wait over a month for them to come back. When they finally did come back, it was too late in the season for the point to cure correctly on our brick steps and now the point has cracked over the winter. Both of the service people who completed the work in October and November were professional and arrived promptly, but even the person who came the second time commented on the many places where the point was still cracked and that the job done by his colleague was incomplete. We gave a grade of C on responsiveness because although phone calls were answered promptly, we had to go to the bottom of the waiting list to have the job completed correctly.

"
came initially in January to do a Level 2 inspection and noted the things that needed to be done when the weather got warmer. Had the work" done last week. He is was punctual, professional, knowledgeable and friendly. He took the time to explain what needed fixing; how it all works; and more importantly, how to keep caring for the fireplace/chimney moving forward. His crew were equally friendly & professional. They were careful to protect the flooring and good clean up afterwards. I will be calling them again in the future for on going maintenance.

Chimney sweep and fireplace inspection, cleaning
Chimney Sweep, Chimney Repair

Regular chimney inspection and cleaning helps prevent fires from creosote buildup and saves money on repairs. Here’s a look at what’s involved and the costs.

A chimney inspection covers every part of the structure, interior and exterior. (Photo courtesy of Angie's List member David G. of Portland, Oregon)
Chimney Repair, Chimney Sweep

Chimneys, fireplaces and vents need to be inspected at least once per year. Even an unused chimney needs to be checked for possible animal nests or damage.

Angie's Answers

Most all professional chimney sweeps now utilize the National Fire Protection  211 Standard for chimneys, fireplaces , Vents and solid fuel-burning appliances for chimney inspections, which determines when and whether he has to access the roof.

There are 3 levels of inspection  The most commonly performed are Level 1 and level 2  are listed:

Level 1            Done as Annual Inspection

                      Routine cleaning of the flue

Direct replacement of a similar appliance

Level 1 inspection is recommended for a chimney under continued service under the same conditions with the continued use of the same appliance.

IN A Level 1 inspection, your chimney service tech should examine the *READILY ACCESSIBLE portions of the appliance and the chimney connection. HE will be looking for basic Soundness of the chimney structure and flue as well as the basic appliance installations and connections. HE will also Verify that  the chimney is free of obstruction and combustible deposits.

* Readily accessible Means that no special equipment is required to gain such access, ie.Ladder

LEVEL 2            Upon sale or transfer of a property

After an operating malfunction or an external event is likely to have caused damage to the chimney

Addition or removal of one or more connected appliances, or the replacement of an appliance withone of a different type, a different input rting or a different efficiency.

Prior to relining or replacement of the flue lining

Level 2 insp. are required when any changes are made to the system. Changes can include a change of Fuel Type, changes in shape or material in the flue,Replacement or addition of an appliance of a disimilar type, input rating or efficiency. Building fires, chimney fire or other seismic events as well as weather events or obvious construction defects would be indicators that a level 2 is warranted.

Level 2 includes everything in a level 1 PLUS the *Accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior including attic, crawl spaces and basements. it addresses proper clearances from combustible in accessible locations. There are no speciality tools required to open or access doors, panels, or coverings during a level 2 insp.  The level 2  insp should also include the visual inspection by video scanning equipment or by other means in order to examine the internaql surfaces and joints of all the flue liners inside the chimney structure. No removal or demolition or any permrnantely attached portions of the chimney or building structure or finish shall be required in a level 2 insp.

*ACCESSIBLE means if you can get to it with special equipment do it but you dont have to take apart anything for said access. Use of ladders and cameras just no demolition.

LEVEL 3  SEE NFPA 211 STANDARD FOR DETAILS

***THE REAL ANSWER to this question lies with the accessibility of the top of the chimney and roof type.  Most professional sweeps want to examine up close the top of the chimney for cracked masonry crowns , which is very common, Flashing issues, top view down flue, and for prefab chimneys to insp the condition of the Chase cover and cap.

Note that the use of a special tool (ladder) to gain access to the chimney is under a level 2 inspection, which can be additional costs since it is a much more thorough inspection.

It is possible to sweep and do a level 1 insp. without accessing the roof.

Also most professional sweeps have equipment that allows us to sweep the chimney with a rotary system that is operated from inside at the fireplace opening and achieve a much better cleaning than pushing brushes down from the top and without getting on the roof. We also video scan the flue from the hearth so the homeowner can be a part of that inspection or "chimney-oscopy". They see the live action of the top of the chimney and conditions that exist inside their system so when they get their report they know they are not some stock pics that could be used to sell repairs but the actual pics of the conditions they viewed in their system. And we do not have to access the roof.

If the chimney access requires multiple ladders or is a "brush with death", there could be extra cost, and the sweep would make an onsite decision regarding the ability to safely reach the top of the chimney or have to use a lesser option of binoculars or rely on experience to determine whats going on up top based on visible symptoms,  if access is too dangerous or not possible.

So don't discount a sweeps knowledge or ability on whether he gets on the roof or not. Check him out on referral sites , company web site, credentials, training and experience. Get referals and check on liability insurance and you should be able to find a sweep that can meet your need. If you are in North Carolina check us out at ClassicChimney.com. Punctual, efficient, effective, kind. We were instructed on how to protect and gradually strengthen the fire box part so it could withstand the flames without cracking. The instructions were useful and easy to follow. We are moving and had this work done to prepare for renters. We will be using

gave us a free estimate to replace our chimney lining as well as to replace our dryer vents from a soft line to a rigid line. He was very honest about what work needed to be prioritized, and what we could get away living with for another few years. He also gave us some tips on work we could do ourselves to tide us over. He was very knowledgable and spent a lot of time explaining everything so I could understand. While we might not be using him immediately, we will definitely think of him in the future thanks to his honesty and professionalism.

No problems. They made an appointment for as soon as the stainless steel liner would arrive and kept it! my only concern: did I need stainless steel, which costs 4 times as much as aluminum. Another firm said I did not but I had already agreed and put in a down payment.
Now I'm waiting to see if my heating bills have gone down.

I have used them in the past and they were great. This time round not so. The person who I spoke to initially and said he would do the work said he would clean out the ash trap for me and check on my other house that he did work at previously. Another guy turned up without notice to do the work. The office said they were done with the job and asked for full payment, I noticed the ash trap wasn't emptied. When I asked the office about it I was told there would be an substantial additional charge. I declined and paid their invoice. The first week of spring they turned up again. My security cameras showed them finishing work on the roof months after they said the work was done. When I enquired why their van was there they didn't respond. If you do go with this company get everything in writing and don't pay them a cent until you get a ladder and verify they have completed the job.

performed a chimney sweep of our wood burning fire place.
Hillsboro Chimney Repair Services Provider Name Locked
the owner performed the sweep as expected. The issues we had was not necessary with the service performed, but how he treated my wife. He rushed my wife to hurry and write him a check because he was late to another apptinment, eventhough he was under the 1.5 hour of time he allotted for the job. As he proceeds to rush my wife to write the check, he says that he visually spotted a flue line crack near the top of the chimney and that it was unsafe to use the chimney. He was insistant that we promise not to use the chimney and that it would take addtional $1000s of dollars to repair. (tear down and rebuild) He recommended a chimscan to verify. I visually inspected the top from the top of the chimney and saw no indication of such a crack. I spoke with him regarding this and all of the sudden it wasn't such and urgent matter any longer. In would not recommend the service provider due to integrity.
